The Image of the Transsylvanian Village in Rolf Bauerdick’s Novel „Wie die Madonna auf den Mond kam“

Rolf Bauerdick is a German journalist, who published especially photo reportages about the Roma from Eastern Europe. He travelled more than 100 times to Bulgaria, Albania, Romania and other countries. His journalistic work led to very controversial opinions whereas his first novel „Wie die Madonna auf den Mond kam“ (2009) proved from the beginning to be a bestseller. The image of the fictional transsylvanian village Baia Luna has even been compared to Gabriel Garcia Marquez’ famous Macondo in „One Hundred Years of Solitude“. Bauerdick’s novel offers a complex view on the life of romanians, germans, Roma people living together in a small village up in the mountains, a view that includes personal dramas, political events, but also daily life for over 50 years, beginning with the period between the World Wars and ending with the last years of the 20th century.

Keywords: Bauerdick, photo reportages about the Roma, controversial opinions, first novel, bestseller, fictional transsylvanian village Baia Luna, complex view, ending with the last years of the 20th century.

Pyramids are not built like myths. Mihai Pop and the reinvention of Folklore Studies

The paper assesses the intellectual profile of Romanian ethnologist Mihai Pop, from the doublefold perspective of theoretical thinking and institutional work in his field. Lettered in Russian Formalism and Czech Structuralism during the inter-war period, Mihai Pop managed to accomplish his formation in a remarkable structuralist-semiotic setting in postwar Romania, in a theoretical stance which remained singular in Romanian research during communism and acquired a well-deserved international recognition. Among others, this stance enabled Mihai Pop to rebuild the domain of Romanian Folklore studies, after the 1948 education reform, and safeguard the field against ideologization, which was about to return in full force after 1971 and after his 1975 retirement .

The Midsummer Night. The Inhabitation of the Sacred in the Recuperator Hermeneutics

The hermeneutical reading of the novel Noaptea de Sânziene (translated as The Forbidden Forest) emphasizes the survival of the sacred in the spiritual adventure of its characters, in a series of initiation scenarios, and also identifies a style, a poetics, a set of rules and rhetorical procedures in order to isolate -within the discursive ”body” – the space of a sacred memory, the space of a spiritual journey.

Franco Moretti – about literary survival. Analysis and research

This article focuses on the study of literary evolution by using an innovative method created by the Italian professor Franco Moretti. His analysis regarding literature and the way it has been seen until now reveals the central concepts in his studies: distant reading and quantitative research. He wanted to develop an evolutionary theory in literature, so his works deal with nonconformist ways of looking and studying literature from its beginnings up to the present. This revolutionary view is totally different from the old historical paradigm. Literary survival is a concept associated with the biological evolution and Charles Darwin`s theories.

The Bohemian Figure in Pierre Bourdieu’s Work: the Modern Literary Field

This article tries to expose the way in which Pierre Bourdieu’s view on 19th century bohemian literature can serve as an argument for analyzing literature as an autonomous field. His concepts of autonomy, field and bohemia well describe the artistic scene at the beginnings of modernity and explain the way in which art has gained its capability to serve its own porpoise by swerving away from dominant institutions (political and economical). For Pierre Bourdieu, the autonomy of the literary field can be seen, from a marxist, sociological and also poststructuralist point of view, as the key moment in the development of modernism as fight against bourgeoisie and aristocracy. But also, this article debates the thesis of Peter Burger or Norbert Elias in order to understand the constant return of the alternative in the midst of the bourgeoisie.

His studies framed in „The Rules of Art. Genesis and Structure of the Literary Field” can be compared to the ones of Nathalie Heinich or Judith Halasz in order to understand the effects and the underground work of the alternative in art in general.

The (In)Actuality of Lucian Blaga’s Theory of Influences

The present study aims at re-analyzing and restating the theoretical legitimacy and the practical applicability in comparative literature of the two types of influences: the modelling and the catalytic ones, such as they are defined and presented by Lucian Blaga in the Trilogy of Culture, as well as the actuality and contemporaneousness of this theory with respect to the contemporary Romanian literature/culture and the Weltliteratur / World literature.

The Prose of the Generation 2000. The Detabooization of the Homosexual Couple

The following paper aims to investigate the manner in which the problem of homosexuality is represented in Romanian contemporary literature once with the 2000 Generation. Homosexuality was considered a crime in the Romanian Penal Code until 2001, but right after the homosexuality punishment was abolished, the gay character started to be approached explicitly in Romanian literature. Therefore, the bet of this article is to analyze the homosexual character, starting from Dora Pavel’s novel Do not cross, Adrian Schiop’s Soldații. Poveste din Ferentari and Adrian Teleșpan’s Cimitirul. Before being gay, the heroes of these novels are already living a peripheral existence since they are presented as outcasts of their communities.

Romanian Poetry of the 2000s. The Setting for a Change in Paradigm

The main subject of this paper represents the study of Romanian poetry after the year 2000. The goal of the paper is determining a set of characteristics specific to the poets of this period and the discovery of a breaking point in the close literary past, that signals a mutation in the literary paradigm and the emergence of a new poetic sensibility. The research tries to pinpoint the conditions of the conflict between the so-called Generation 2000 and the literary figures of the 1980s, as well as the two general directions that have evolved within in, with their set of specific characteristics. Lastly, the future of their aesthetics are being called into question.

Onomastics in the novels of Ștefan Agopian

The present study focuses on the proper names of the characters of Ștefan Agopian’s novels, namely The Day of Wrath (Ziua mâniei) and Velvet Tache (Tache de catifea), those in which this seemingly secondary aspect of the text proves to be significant. An atheist and calophile writer, originally attributable to the 80s generation, at least temporally, Stefan Agopian remains particular in the field of the characters’ names, in part due to the similarity of the novels, which place the action in more or less revolt eras. The poetics reflected also in the proper names is one of, as it has been said, magical realism and, in any case, of a highly formal form of prose with a mannerist stylistic, a contorted and precious discourse not to be encountered by other authors of the postwar.

Traian Demetrescu – The Aesthetic Gesture

The symbolist Romanian poet Traian Demetrescu wrote a few articles and an essay discussing the limits of aesthetics and poetry outside of the poem itself. The writer captures poetic moments, in Laurent Jenny’s terms, preceding the writing of the poem or simply existing outside of it. It confers to some situations and objects the attribute of poeticity; consequently, a series of objects appear to him as endowed with a sort of poetic expressiveness. Traian Demetrescu thus realizes the widening of the perception of the poem at the moment when the Romanian culture steped into the first modernist stage at the end of the 19th century.

About Institutions & Continuities. The Lessons of H.-R. Patapievici & Mircea Cărtărescu. Or, About the Attention to the Other as a Method of Institutional Construction

The present article aims at observing how H.-R. Patapievici and Mircea Cărtărescu have become the two main institutions of contemporary Romanian writing. Namely, how their incessant attention to the other has eventually led towards the building of their impressive body of works; in what concerns H.-R Patapievici, his puzzling array of philosophical and intellectual interests originates in this impassionate attention to the other, which leads him both to examine „the recent human” and to deplore the absence of „a market for the ideas”. In what regards Cărtărescu, the same „attention the other” is the punctum origo of his massive prose works, culminating with his recent novel Solenoid (an 800-page humanist manifesto) and with Landscape After Hysteria (a collection of social, political, and ethical attitudes). Therefore, it is this apparently naïve „attention towards the other” that represents the most effective institutional philosophy of the present.

Cultural Translation Enabling a Dialogue between West and East

Translations are not only a way of communication; they are not only connected with linguistic competence, but with intertextuality, psychological, and narrative competence, being a cultural vector, a facilitator of cross-cultural cooperation. It has to be clearly acknowledged that translation functions not just as a trans-lingual vector of meaning but also as a vector of cultural specificity. For it is only through translations that elements of one culture become available to another culture. When Chinese literature ‘travels abroad’, it does it mainly in the form of translated literature. In this case, culture operates largely through the translational activity. Chinese literature bears significant cultural heterogeneities that are not shared by other cultures or at least may be easily misunderstood by receivers of a different culture. So, there is no longer only the case of translation of the work, but also the case of the translatability of the culture.

The present research paper aims to contribute to our understanding of the importance and influence of the cultural sub-strata of language and translation in managing nowadays cross-cultural issues.

The archaeology of the medieval towers in Mount Athos. An attempt of archaeological research.

The present study is focused on the archaeology of the medieval deserted towers in Mount Athos. Besides the towers included in the monastery precinct that protect the arsanas (little harbor) or the towers of the distinct fortification, the deserted towers controlled the inner paths and the sea, preventing the attacks of the pirates. Only three monasteries had a compound defense system: the precinct of the monastery, a fortification on the shore, a fortified harbor and an upper side tower, unprotected by a precinct.

Questioning as a Cognitive Process: Its Ilustration in the Autobiography of Charles Darwin and its Implications in Modern Education

The present study aims to highlight the issue of questioning, of questioning in the act of learning. There are also underlined the aspects of the social contexts that discourage or encourage the problem-posing. The importance of the educational act is illustrated in the autobiographical writing of the one considered to be the “father of evolution”, Charles Darwin (1809-1882). Finally, there are synthesized some implications that the questioning has in the educational act, its role being central in developing the capacity to solve problems and to find answers to the problems of human life.

Making sense of Jürgen Habermas:The politics of short philosophical introductions

The article focuses on a thematic titled Making Sense of Jürgen Habermas: The Politics of Short Philosophical Introductions and proposes as driver’s logbook the emphasis placed on the signals provided within the series of the grand interpreters of Habermas, seen as ”nodal points”. Such signals are concerning: the primate of recognition and of adaptation to the updated requirements of the moment of the reading ; the approach by simplification of long and technical writings, by the attention given to the accommodation of a first reading to the complex and varied answers provided for the great questions; the recomposing of details which are not enough interpreted, the addition of other details, the nomination of whatever is important, or, on the contrary of the marginal elements of the analysis; the provision of an overview and of philosophical and political context for the whole project; the summary nomination and the extended analysis of the research programmes; the facilitating of the access to a specialized bibliography, through reading suggestions and a brief presentation of the books, studies and articles dedicated to the works of the German philosopher.

Children and Public Street Protestings – a Public Debate of Striking Immediacy in Romania. The Social media and the Mass-media as main vectors to shape up the dominant threads of opinion

The recent street events in Romania have ignited a public debate on the topic of children’s participation in the street protestings. The mass-media as well as thesocial mediahave generated and fueled two diverging streams of opinion: a domineeringone, maintaining that the children’s presence to such actions is nothing but a genuine practical application of democracy, and a second trend, represented in contrast by a minority claiming that children and infants fetched by their parents to the site of street demonstrations have a potential of becoming victims of political manipulation, being even exposed to risks of possible violence, even in cases of peaceful protesting. In the middle between these seemingly irreconcillable positions stand the experts, who in an attempt to display balanced views, discuss both risks and benefits, ultimately leaving it to the parents’ decision whether or not to take their children with them for the street demonstrations they wish to be part of.

Television – Between Information and Communication Journalism

In an eminently visual time, characterized by technical mutations, the notion of reality displayed on TV is continually changing. This favors a paradigmatic shift for audiences, as well as for the profession of journalist itself. Neo-television proposes a globalization, a decline of information journalism in favor of the communication type, therefore the image of the world and the world of the image are themselves split up, which encourages analysis.
