G. Călinescu. The Rhetoric of “democracy” and “democratizing” (1944-1946)

The article analyzes G. Călinescu’s implication in the process of Romania’s Stalinization during 1944-1946. We take into account a few articles he published in that period in “Tribuna poporului” and “Naţiunea” newspapers. In a previous paper, we made a series of considerations regarding G. Călinescu relations with The Union of Patriots. This time, we refer mainly to his position in the National Popular Party (funded in 1946), a propaganda satellite of the Romania Communist Party. Documents reveal that this political organization was created in order to induce a false public image about left extremism governing intentions. In this point, G. Călinescu served deliberately the Marxist-Leninist ideology about democratizing Romanian society. His rhetoric was based mainly on the ideas of Monarchy, respect of property and moderate governing coalition.

A festive discourse and its consequences:
The translator Hermine Pilder-Klein targeted by the Securitate

The present article refers to a family of Transylvanian Saxon scholars, especially to the renowned Germanist Karl Kurt Klein and to his sister, Hermine Pilder Klein, the latter playing a very important part in the propagation of Romanian literature in the German language area by means of her translations. Hermine Pilder Klein has published 35 books, mainly translations from Romanian into German, but also many transliterations of short stories and novels, published in newspapers and magazines. She has translated: M. Sadoveanu, I.L. Caragiale, L. Rebreanu, I. Creangă etc. In spite of providing important services to the Romanian literature, respectively to Romania itself, she has been politically convicted for an unprovable guilt, which has later on lead to her rehabilitation.

Legitimizing Mechanisms in Romanian Literary Histories

This paper explores Romanian literary histories in the light of the theoretical acknowledgements of “World Literature”. Its foremost representatives define the international literary space as a competition for universal acknowledgment among nations. The complex dynamic between culture and socio-economic power is responsible for the hierarchical distinction between (semi)peripheral and core literatures. The case of Romanian literature is significant for the East-European struggle to overcome the socio-political delay by manufacturing “great narratives”. The discourse of literary histories, seen, since Herder, as a privileged reflection of the nation’s soul, is contaminated by legitimizing strategies meant to re-locate the (semi)peripheral literatures on the map of world literature. This paper analyzes Nicolae Iorga’s first literary histories at the edge of the twentieth-century, the literary histories of Eugen Lovinescu, Istoria literaturii române contemporane (The History of the Romanian Contemporary Literature), Istoria literaturii române de la începuturi până în prezent, 1941 (The History of Romanian Literature from its Origins to the Present Times) by G. Călinescu emphasizing the compensation strategies meant to surpass the distance between the symbolic prestige of Romanian literature and core literatures.

The Practice of „Book Opening” and the Challenge of Understanding Reflexes of Autochtonous Ethnology

The target of the present article is twofold. On the one side, it challenges Romanian ethnology to rethink one of its most used conceptual tools: the opposition popular/ official religion. Its hierarchical/discriminative content, its theological origin, and its narrow perspective over both the object and the method of Ethnology are only some of the problems caused by its usage. As an alternative, I argue here for the adequacy of Leonard Primiano’s concept of vernacular religion, which dissolves the opposition and opens a much wider, non-polemic perspective over the religious phenomenon. On the other side, from the angle of vernacular religion, it offers an ethnological analysis (with special emphasis on the sociological and psychological implications) of one of the most neglected and most complicated Romanian religious practices which galvanizes the local religious field.

La vie en prose

The study embodies an investigation of James Joyce’s epistolary relationship with his soon-to-be wife, Nora Barnacle. The various interpretations of this wide spread subject matter tend to suffer (notably in the anglo-saxon territory) from a certain speech hyperspecialization (especially from a biographical stance). However, in the unseasoned eyes of the populace, they paradoxically had the exact opposite effect, of trivialization. Even Pat Murphy’s Nora, a 2000 film, proves it. Contrary to this array of expectations, the correspondence between Joyce and Nora draws attention to a series of stylistic particularities (oftentimes neglected by commentators for their so-called non-narrative quality): firstly, it pertains to the writer’s reconstruction of his beloved one’s past by trying to follow it in an almost museographic way (unforeseen visits to some of her old dwellings etc.). Another interesting note to make is that, in spite of Nora’s precarious schooling (cynically accentuated by experts), the beginning of their love is marked by one of the most elitist of literary genres, poetry (diligently pursued by young Joyce). Last but not least, in this essay, the embellishment of the lewd phrases that Joyce employs in his letters is subjected to a long-deserved relativization.

Comics and their arcana

The present study departs from Ioan Stanomir’s recent book, Camera obscura. Dream, imagination and comics, in order to explore the unextinguishable imaginaire of the „graphic prose”. Following Stanomir’s foostepts, Mitchievici aims at showing that comics are not a minor genre, as common preconception states; the comics are instead a vehicle just as effective as any other literary genre in conveying a sense of the great art. Mainly focused on the iconic figures of Tintin and Corto Maltese, the studies of Stanomir and Mitchievici clearly prove their demonstrandum – namely that „graphic prose” or comics are one of the few forms of art specific to the postmodern cultural paradigm.

Eminescu and the Metamorphoses of Gothic: “The Ghosts”

This paper discusses the gothic elements in Mihai Eminescu’s poem The Ghosts, by opposing the rigor and balance of the early architectural gothic to the fantastic and psychological frame through which it is read by the romantics. For them, as well as for Eminescu, gothic architecture seems to be „involuntarily expressive”. The paper analyses the sedimentation of figural elements under the form of detalis of atmosphere which draw the poem near the literary gothic, taking into consideration the polarity between medieval Christianism and archaic spirituality. The gothic elements in Eminescu’s poetry draw back on the popular ballad of the dead fiancé, which is infused into the imaginary of The Ghosts and contaminates The Evening Star.

G. Coşbuc’s linguistic imaginarium in terms of idilical eros

Our paper seeks ways of constructing G. Coşbuc’s linguistic imaginarium in terms of eros. As a literary genre, Coşbuc grow, especially romance. Fascinated by their purity, the poet begins composing these poems, influenced by Greeks and Latins and by the Swiss writer Salis-Seewis. In all Coşbuc’s Idylls, appear country people who live their love blessed by the Nature. In her evolution love has many phases, all perceived and presented by the poet. Love is very complex, the process itself shows the most unusual modulations and the projection of it into a system of signs is the beginning of a marvelous journey.

Vespasian Erbiceanu: Family, Education and the Beginning of his Magistrat Career – an Advocacy of a Monography

Vespasian Erbiceanu, an erudite magistrate, an excellent connoisseur of Russian law and of the locale Bessarabian norms, distinguished himself by contributing scientifically to the legal science of Romania, but especially through his activity within the framework of Bessarabian justice during 1918-1923. The issue of the Bessarabian justice reform, of the unification and nationalization of the legislation in this province has concerned him during the most important part of his life, from the perspective of the activity set up in Chişinău, as well as from the perspective of the analyst and of the dogmatic. The subject is almost unknown in the respective field of study. The present article proposes to realize a
bibliographic draft of Erbiceanu in the first period of his life, insisting upon the education he received and upon his first activity years in magistracy.

Personalities of universal economic thought. A medallion of Jean Jaurès, the adherent of peace

War, which marked so often and so hard Europe’s and the world’s evolution in the last one and a half century, has required a very high price, in all fields. What about negotiations, peace? It is much cheaper. But not just from this point of view, also from the human perspective there were some “peace apostles”. Among them was the French Jean Jaures. What were his ideas and theories, what did he achieved and what are the reverberation of it today? This are questions which will be debated in this present study.

Interpretations of corporeality in the digital culture

This paper focuses on the ways in which text and corporeality interfere in computer-mediated communication, especially in the first stages of the development of the Internet. The idea of disconnecting the body from the subject represented a strong point of the ideology associated with New Media. The Internet has been considered a cultural mediator through which the differences that segregated humanity could be overcome, the central theme of this utopia being the apparent lack of corporeality in the digital communicational exchanges. In fact, the discourses that contain the idea of becoming free from our bodies “mobilize” the whole Western tradition of conceptual oppositions. The computer-mediated communication, especially the one based on text, was a proper environment for the re-assertion of the Cartesian ideal of the “pure mind”. Thus, the vocabulary of the emancipatory rhetoric of technology and the imaginary that the disembodiment had created are researched.

Typography in Sibiu after 1800

Following the death, in 1789 and in 1801, respectively, of the two great figures of typography in Sibiu, Martin Hochmeister and Petrus Barth, their companies are taken over by the sons. Although the rivalry between the two “houses” still persists, it becomes less dramatic, thanks of a gradual specialization brought about by the two leaders’ options. While Hochmeister specializes in German books, Barth keeps on with and extends Cyrillic typography. Recently uncovered documents allow us to gauge the real dimensions of Barth’s printing house’s activity, whose products reach the remotest corners of the Romanian-inhabited space.

A juristic writing from the beginning of the 19th century

In 1805, the young lawyer and literate Vasile Aaron compiled a legal guidebook to be used by the councils of Romanian “Eastern law” churches in Transylvania. The author’s intention was clearly to publish his work, as proven by the word “booklet” which he used to describe it in his address To the Readership (dated October 1st, 1805) and by further information provided by a 1806 letter written by Samuil Micu. However, sharing the fate of many writings of that era, the work was never printed and circulated in form of hand-written copies. Although Aaron’s work has been reported as extant and in use in 1868, at the National Orthodox Congress in Sibiu, studies on canon law and histories of Romanian law both failed to capitalize this information. The work made a timid entrance into scientific circles in 1941, when Professor Semproniu Lupaş described a copy carried out in 1843 by an archpriest in Apoldu de Sus, near Sibiu. However, beyond having its title mentioned along with the rest of Aaron’s works, the manuscript never benefitted from a substantial analysis of its contents. According to Semproniu Lupaş, Vasile Aaron was “the first author of a juristic work written in Romanian language”. Nevertheless, his work was not merely a legal guidebook for church consistories. The “Praxis of church councils”, as it has come to be known, provided Romanian clergy for decades in as row with information and know-how regarding the jurisdictional system in the Principality of Transylvania and the various procedures to be followed during a lawsuit. Also, Aaron’s pioneering work contributed significantly to the formation of a Romanian legal language. Beyond the technical aspects, the “Praxis” is a valuable information source regarding its time and people, allowing today´s researchers to get a deeper understanding of the vast and complex area covered by the actions of the Transylvanian school “enlighteners”.
