The Inculturation Method of Father Matteo Ricci in China

The study presents the inculturation model of the Gospel in China between 1590-1610 through the work of Matteo Ricci, a Jesuit from Macerata. His biographical data, his close relationship with a transdisciplinary humanistic culture, his excellent memory of philologist and philosopher, his formation of mathematician and geometrician, geographer and astrologer make of Matteo Ricci the only European retained by the memory of the Chinese Encyclopedia. For the modern world, his accommodation principle of the Christian information to the Chinese people at the time, such as inserted in the humanistic culture by Erasmus of Rotterdam, remains one of the key strategies against the anti-Christian mentality due to indolence and cultural mediocrity.

Reflections on a spot light of Origen: “De Oratoria”, XXXII

It is Origen’s greatest talent to have known how to combine in On Prayer the literal meaning with the allegorical one as much as it was neces sary. This treatise is one of catechization, reason for which it does not particularly suits the exegesis of allegorical type. What crowns it all is the fact that in few places Origen is more subtle and spiritualized than in On Prayer. That is why it has also been said that Origen’s treatise discovers, more than any writing of his, the depth and warmth of his Christian feelings to such an extend that it is sig ni fi cant for his entire theological thinking, and it is considered as the most successful exegetic work of Origen. Chapters XXXI-XXXII present the so-called “formal re com mendations” regarding prayer and, according to Origen, it is not inap pro priate to present in a more detailed manner the spiritual mood, the behavior that we must have when praying, the place where we should pray, the direction to wards which we must look and the appropriate and chosen time for prayer. From all these recommendations I am particularly interested in direction, which Origen clearly and distinctly presents in chapter XXXII.

The digital edition of literary theorisation texts – the digital archive e-poeticae

After carrying a brief contextualization on the issue of literary documents in an electronic environment, we intend to present the current state of E-poeticae: an e-publishing project of literary theorisation texts produced in Portugal, France and Spain, during the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, launched in 2010 by a group of researchers from CELCC/ISMAI (Oporto, Portugal) available at the website www.e-poeticae.com. It is intended to provide a digital database containing the greatest number of literary metatexts produced in those countries, in the indicated timeline. By literary theorisation texts we understand those explanatory, analytical or normative texts, in which we find expressed the guidelines, rules, goals or semiotic mechanisms that underlie the creation, structure and reception of the literary text (Silva 1988). Considering that different expressions of metaliterary consciousness may be taken into account (Głowínski 1976), in E-poeticae’s digital archive we’ve been assembling a wide variety of metatexts, such as literary criticism published in the press; manifestos; essays and treatises published separately; writers’ own statements in prefaces and other similar paratexts; or even theoretical fragments of a metaliterary nature found within the framework of a given literary text. The nature of this project is, obviously, dynamic and it implies an active and constant growth of the on-line corpus that, hopefully, will constitute a huge repository of metatextual material. Since March 2010, www.e-poeticae.com released about five hundred literary theorisation texts, all of them produced in the 19th century and published mainly in Portugal. By developing a digital database that represents documented issues that beset the metaliterary consciousness of both critics and writers, from the 19th century to the contemporary age, E-poeticae can thereby be a relevant resource contributing to the updating of the body of knowledge in the fields of History of Literary Ideas, Critical History and Theory of Literature in Portugal, Spain and France.

Guidelines in Romanian Biblioteconomical Education

Romanian library science school alongside with philological university education celebrates 150 years of existence. Not being, at the beginning, an institutional structure as known today, the specialization in library science was considered as a fundamental part of philological education. Great personalities as Ioan Bianu, Nerva Hodoş, Nicolae Georgescu Tistu, Dan Simonescu contributed to the affirmation of the library science domain as an academic and research domain in Romania. Starting with 1990 we find again the library science specialization in various universities in the country and the largest development is found at the Bucharest University.

The Practice of „Book Opening” and the Challenge of Understanding Reflexes of Autochtonous Ethnology

The target of the present article is twofold. On the one side, it challenges Romanian ethnology to rethink one of its most used conceptual tools: the opposition popular/official religion. Its hierarchical/discriminative content, its theological origin, and its narrow perspective over both the object and the method of Ethnology are only some of the problems caused by its usage. As an alternative, I argue here for the adequacy of Leonard Primiano’s concept of vernacular religion, which dissolves the opposition and opens a much wider, non-polemic perspective over the religious phenomenon. On the other side, from the angle of vernacular religion, it offers an ethnological analysis (with special emphasis on the sociological and psychological implications) of one of the most neglected and most complicated Romanian religious practices which galvanizes the local religious field.

Mihai Eminescu and the Protochronistical Battles

It was not unpredictable that the canonical poet Mihai Eminescu should fall in the middle of the 1970-1980s’ discussion of the Romanian cultural and political precedence, as his works had already been a victim of misreading. This paper aims to briefly analyze the protochronistic discourse around Eminescu’s writings, by discussing the labels attached to his poetry, as well as to his political articles. As a writer, he was spoken of as the first existentialist and the creator of the theatre of the absurd; as a journalist, his is seen through the reductionist glasses of the nationalistic group around Luceafărul as an anti-liberal and, consequently, as an intellectual taking sides with the „working class”. While literary critics speak about a „citizen of the World”, social commentators dwell on his patriotism or even nationalism.

G. Călinescu, the Union of Patriots and the Beginning of Stalinization in Romania

The following article discusses about the relation between the literary critic G. Călinescu, the crypto-communist organization “The Union of Patriots” and the first steps to Romania’s Stalinization in the autumn of 1944. We bring some new details regarding the history of this political structure, which served so called anti-Fascist purposes during the Second World War (1942-1944). Besides, our intention is to spot the way the Communist Party used it as a middle of propaganda among the intellectuals. Furthermore, the aim of the paper is to prove that G. Călinescu, as a member of “The Union of Patriots”, served the ideology of the Communist Party and its short term political goals in a series of articles he published in the newspaper “Tribuna poporului” (“People’s Tribune”) in 1944. He sustained very promptly the “democratic” (Stalinist) signals and proposals that left extremism, under a populist and message, spread into Romanian public space at that time.

Interculturality and spiritual integration.

Aspects of Romanian-German cultural exchanges in Joachim Wittstock’s essays. The main focus of the present article is the essay volume Einen Halt suchen [Seeking support] (2009) by Joachim Wittstock (*1939), Romanian German language writer, analyzed in terms of interculturality This approach is usually a challenge, on the one hand an intrinsic analysis of the literary text is carried out, on the other it is indispensable to transcend it, taking into account the specific context of multicultural spaces. Sibiu is such a multicultural space and has a lot to offer as far as interculturality is concerned, which will be exemplified through Joachim Wittstock’s essays.

The Nineties. The Utopy of the New Literature.

On the one hand, the period after 1989 is characterized in Romanian literature by the apparition of the so-called ,,drawer texts”. As most intimate types of writing, memoirs and diaries are easiest to relocate within the public consciousness in this regard. Nevertheless, they are also the subject of censorship because of the strong ideological implications. On the other hand, in a Romanian society which seeks in this period for its truths and sets up its writers for public sentence givers, prose writers remain a credible social category in the public consciousness. Thus, the new literature is based on the desire to put into fiction a world ,,such as it is” – therefore, between the recovery of the memoirs from communism and the writing of the prose of a decaying Romania, the literature of the first five post-communist years did not have time for poetry. Starting from these premises, this paper aims at investigating more than fragmentary  contexts of post-communist literature, as previous researches have simply done, creating thus a fragmentary picture of the period. In the same time, the paper tries to develop a taxonomy of the literary phenomena of the period.

The Metamorphoses of Memory in the Prose Fiction of Borges and Eliade

In the present paper I propose a comparative approach Borges-Eliade, with a focus on what the two writers have in common, namely their philosophical or so-called fantastic short fiction. My treatment of the subject will not be guided however by free associations and momentary inspiration, but by a couple of distinct landamarks: (1) both Eliade’s and Borges’s prose fiction rejects historicism and psychologism; (2) at the same time, it has a spiritual meaning, different from all the other meanings disseminated by the commonplace readings. These landmarks will be Ariadne’s thread in the search for the hidden order of the text, the figure in the carpet that should be deciphered by a poetics of memory.

Compassion as Remedy against Violence and Fanaticism: Thoughts on Borges and Oz

This paper aims at examining a simple yet fundamental question: what could trigger fanaticism? Some authors say its seed is “the feeling of definite superiority”; therefore, its scope includes both the lighter forms (uniformity and conformism) and the most (literally) explosive ones, such as the suicide attacks the media recounts. Irrespective of its intensity, the specific trait of the phenomenon is the fanatic’s desire to change you at all costs – he is “extremely generous”, a “great altruist”; most frequently, the fanatic seems more interested in you than you are yourself: “wants to save your soul, he wants to redeem you, he wants to liberate you from sin, from error, from smoking, from your faith or from your faithlessness, he wants to improve your eating habits, or to cure you of your drinking or voting habits”. From where, then, does the dislike before the fanatic emerge? Despite the “good intentions”, the repulsion lies in the pattern of the “forced conversion”, i.e. the fact that our freedom and will are trampled on in the name of “good”. A coercion of the other’s conscience in the name of the supreme conviction that we and we alone are right – and that the other must be persuaded by any means possible to accept it. The main bibliographic sources of this essay on fanaticism are drawn from the works of Jorge Luis Borges and Amos Oz – while not ignoring some contributions of fundamental poets like Yehuda Amichai.

Considerations about the Appearance of Medieval Christianity in Central and Southeast Europe

In terms of the archaeological discoveries the consequences of Constantine and Methodius mission are visible in the burial occurred around new religious buildings. Today in Slovakia – Nitra region – occurred during 9-10 centuries a number of small churches around which were developed cemeteries. Funerary practices during this stage cannot be separated from those existed in the rural area, where the pagans rituals can be proved. In both cases the funerary inventory is not much special and consists mainly of jewelry. The notable difference is given by the existence of weapons in graves around the church, which proves once again that the funerary inventory is rather important from the perspective of social differentiation than ethnicity. The analysis of the 9th to 11th century cemeteries and graveyards on the territory of Moravia shows that we have three types of connection between necropolis/cemeteries and church:
a. necropolis in rows outside the settlement – in rural area;
b. superimposed cemetery by a church – mostly in urban area at the beginning;
c. cemeteries that occurred immediately after the church building

Liberalism and Solidarity. Professor Charles Gide in Actuality. A Few Coordinates

Between the most important concepts of our time, one must count those of social economy and solidarity economy, both lying in tough confrontation with the economical doctrine of liberalism. The French professor Charles Gide has strenuously worked in this direction almost one hundred years ago. But who was Charles Gide? Which were the main coordinates of his work? Why are his idea still so discussed and confronted in present times? A few answers to these questions are delivered in the present paper.

Transitional justice Romanian style:
Condemning the communist ideology, but not the communist repressors

The debate about transitional justice in post-communist Romania, though vigorously supported by numerous public intellectuals in the early 1990’s, slowly faded away after 2004, for coming at term with a merely symbolic measure, namely officially condemning communism as criminal ideology in 2007. Intellectuals’ satisfaction with symbolic measures instead of effective transitional justice is twofold. On the one hand, the condemnation of communism was a long awaited ideological victory for right-wing intellectuals. On the other hand, the public positions that many of them occupied with the support of right-wing parties in government unable them to accuse political elites in power and to keep pushing for more decisive action against former communist repressors. This inability paves the way for the final rehabilitation and legitimation of former repressors as valuable capitalist entrepreneurs, key businessmen and devoted public servants.

Literature and Politics. Poems dedicated to Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej (1950-1953)

Taking into account the existence of an intimate relationship between ideology and culture in the Romanian communist regime, the main purpose of this study is to identify and analyze the poems composed, in the period 1950-1953, in order to praise Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej. The research aims to identify the name of the poets, the themes that have been explored and the moment chosen for publishing these writings. This type of approach aims to demonstrate that the lyrics composed in the epoch represented a genuine propagandistic means used in order to amplify the Romanian communist leader’s personality cult. Therefore, our research focuses on the most prominent literary personalities who composed encomiastic poems dedicated to Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej and interrogates the reasons behind their subordination in front of the ideological precepts.
