St. Basil the Great – plenary personality of The Church

Basil was styled The Great even by his contemporaries, and he deserved the title for many reasons. He was Great as a exponent of Christian doctrine and as a homilist, greater, however, in practical life, as a prelate of the Church and a man of deeds. On the morrow of his death Saint Basil was surnamed the Great. The Church has had very few men so richly gifted and well-balanced. It has been aptly said of Saint Basil that he was a Roman among the Greeks. His eloquence was less erudite and less glowing than that of Gregory Nazianzen; but his mind was more sound, judicious, and practical, and his speech more familial and simple. By force of character and born leadership, he exercised over his contemporaries a decisive influence.

E. Lovinescu. The art of (not) writing a novel

In the present paper we endeavored to prove that Lovinescu’s artistic creation is generally looked down on as a sort of ‘specimen’ failure; in spite of its quantitative importance, his literature did not meet with the public’s general enthusiasm; on the contrary, putting aside the author’s fame, the scholars kept themselves at bay, being reserved in giving any verdicts. The Genesis of Form… seeks to undo the laboratory experiments of an enigmatic writer who, but for writing it, used to know everything about literature. Thus, the book does not represent, in a restrictive way, an instance of genetic criticism, prone to locate and restore only the pre-publication variants. On the contrary, it aims to inquest – in a complex and subtle manner, at the same time – the issue of subjective taste, which should have determined the evolution and aesthetics of literary forms along the prose writer’s biographic course.

Ştefan Aug. Doinaş: Emendations and New Information Consideration about His Debut

The study is focused upon Ştefan Aug. Doinaş’s debut in periodicals, before and after joining the young intellectual group Cercul Literar de la Sibiu (“from”). We aim to emendate and append Mircea Popa’s study “Începuturile literare ale lui Ştefan Aug. Doinaş” (“The Literary Beginnings of Ştefan Aug. Doinaş”). Besides, it is our intention to bring a few completions to the monographic research elaborated by Diana Ioana Ureche in “Poezia lui Ştefan Aug. Doinaş: modernitate şi clasicitate” (“Ştefan Aug. Doinaş’s Poetry: Modernity and Classicisms”). Moreover, we include the results of our own investigations, which are related to the publications: “Viaţa românească” (“Romanian Life”), “Albatros” (“Albatross”), “Vremea” (“The Age”), “Carpaţii” (“The Carpathians”) and “Pagini literare” (“Literary Pages”). Although not quite significant to the writer’s career, these rediscovered texts give new clues about his evolution, projects and manner of conceiving poetry in the time he had not begun composing his extraordinary ballads. One can assist to an unexpected change, from a naïve and picturesque author to a very attentive and inventive artisan. Little of the pieces we rediscovered in review were ever published into the author’s volumes. Thus, one might say we confront with a sort of unedited poems, because some of them were reshaped through years.

Quasi una monografia

The present study is an analysis of the second edition of the monograph dedicated by the late Sibiu-based critic Ilie Guţan tot the Literary Circle from Sibiu. Much ampler than the first one, it contains two unpublished chapters (an extended one analyzing Radu Stanca’s activity as poetry reviewer, plus another one regarding Radu Stanca’s plays), some other chapter published in the Euphorion magazine, as well as in the volume entitled Kaleidscope (2003), completing the study with important contributions regarding Ştefan Aug. Doinaş, Nicolae Balotă and Ion D. Sîrbu, and with a much more explicit contextualization of the group’s ideas and of the critical posterity of the Literary Circle from Sibiu. Compared with the volume from 1995, which gave the impression of a cumulative project gathering texts published in various periods and magazines (as the author himself shows at the end of each chapter), the present edition represents a solid monograph, much more coherent than the previous one, adding some series of elucidations essential to the bibliography of the Literary Circle from Sibiu and its members.

Zoe Dumitrescu-Buşulenga or about “the risks” of the (eminescian) biography: from likelihood to fiction. Limits and interpretative
deconstructions

Biography as a literary genre is always an exciting and challenging subject, but in the same time quite “fragile” and risky. Our explanations are due to a weakness of the author who cannot “harmonize” perfectly, naturally, in an authentic literary vision, both the verisimilitude of the experienced facts/actions with the narrated or evoked ones. Therefore, biography is situated frequently on the verge of a precipice, adopting, consequently, an unsure, unstable or a “delicate” method of writing which generates the impossibility of the reader to distinguish: how much is truth and how much is fiction in the “act of reading”?

Eminescu and the History Adventure

The paper analyzes the novel Parallel Lives, by Florina Ilis within the framework of a century of influence of Eminescu. The writing distinguishes the contributions of the author referring to the biographical returning prose by utilizing documents accompanying the literature, ,,juxtaposition of many points of view”, and imagining scenes and stories about the life and work of Mihai Eminescu. In parallel there is evidence of the destructive Catilinar spirit as a product of the transition periods and sign of the decline of the meanings and manners in this part of the world

Ion Pop and “the unmistakable voices” of poetry

Ion Pop professes a type of literary criticism which is particularly interested in the “profound sensibility”, in the “unmistakable voice” of a writer, and this makes him an allied of the interpretative techniques of the . The focus on the existentialist core of literature has naturally led him towards a thematist lecture, the critic being constantly able to resonate with the literary text and to suffer from the contamination of the text. Ion Pop’s critical concept incorporates suggestions from Starobinski’s “critical trajectory” especially through the implying axiological judgement and ”the significant coherence”, through the synthetic interpretation of some of the most protean writers. Having a fundamentally modernist sensibility which organises the discourse around concepts as “vital engagement” or “profound existential significance”, Ion Pop has written about a series of poets, from vanguardists to the generation “two thousand”, his attention centred, on one hand, explicitly, on the binomial “literature – existence” and, on the other hand, implicitly, on the “elegiac background” of the literature he analyses. Having such expectations, the happiest encounter could only be the one with the poetry of the 60’s and than with the poetry of the Equinox. The Generation of the 80s gives the critic intellectual satisfaction, while the “generation two thousands” writers are met with serious reserves, caused by their noise and fury, by their excessive hedonism and nihilism, by their epidermal and visceral neo-expressionism.

On ‘East-ethic’ Revisionism and ‘Aesthetic Autonomy’ in Post-December Literary Press (I)

The contemporary critical scene has witnessed the conflictive phenomenon of literary revisions approached through two different ways: the ethic approach and the aesthetic one. If the revisionist perspective has postulated the importance
of the moral criterion as the basic rule of re-reading, the ‘autonomist’ critique takes into consideration the inner value of the writing despite of the ‘moral profile’ of its author. The debate enhances two ways of re-considering the ‘culprit’ texts of the totalitarian period as well as the notion of ‘iconic’ writer.

A monograph of loneliness and feminity

The present study attempts to offer an in-depth analysis of Nicole Valery Grossu, who is under investigation in the period of communism. This study also deals with the description of the system, the transfiguration of suffering, which is the most important effect of life after prison. Telling her experience, Nicole Valery Grossu compares this with a mystical experience. She manages to describe daily prison life, in a story that impresses. Nicole Valery Grossu confesses his mystical experience with a touch of originality and subjectivity. Her book, Bless you, prison…, expresses the feelings of political prisoners in prison memoirs. The purpose of these confessions is to transmit feelings and teachings of the experience to the future generations.

“Confusion became a way of life”. The Security Dossier of the Poet Georg Hoprich

This article refers to the German poet from Romania, Georg Hoprich (1938-1969) and to his Security Dossier. By studying this dossier from the Security Archives, the literary historian Stefan Sienerth highlights and analyses aspects of the writers’ prosecution and of the literary censorship during the Communist period. The poet Georg Hoprich was accused of country betrayal, because he did not dedicate his work to the Socialist Romania, the accusations being based on delation and false testimony. He was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment, but he was released by amnesty after more than three years. Being unable to adapt to the everyday life, as he was still prosecuted by the Security, he committed suicide.

For Whom the Flames Burn, Mister Şerboianu? A Unique Perspective upon Cremation in Romania

In contemporary Romania cremation is a neglected research theme, while in the everyday life tends to be a taboo subject. If postmodernism began to abandon the cultural paradigm of forbidden death, by increasingly displaying death in mass-media, this is not the case for cremation, not in Romania, where the dominant Orthodox Church considers cremation to be a sin and where the popular beliefs on cremation are anchored exclusively in negative representations. The present research aims at analysing the writings dedicated to various aspects of cremation of the inter-war orthodox priest Calinic I. Popp Şerboianu, underlining his efforts in pointing out the connections between cremation and the essence (not  the practices or the common perceptions) of orthodoxism. There are three main dimensions of Şerboianu’s cremationist discourse: the critique of the Romanian Orthodox tradition, the deconstruction of popular representations of cremation and the (re)construction of a positive imaginary of cremation. The paper concludes with the cultural relevance of Şerboianu’s cremationist discourse.

At the Turn of an Era – The Temeschwar Congress from 1790

In the late eighteenth century, the poly-ethnic Orthodox community of the Habsburg Empire has been characterized by an increase in the shift of loyalties. Both Serbs and Romanians still considered the Metropolis of Sremski Karlovci and their common, artificially created and confessionality-based “Illyric Nation”, the main recipient of their common loyalty. In order to define its legal position in Hungary and thus in the Habsburg empire, an assembly was held in Temesvar in August 1790. Some of the postulations then showed that emerging national identities began to spread among the Orthodox (officially not ethnically defined as “Illyrians”) leading to an emerging loyalty shift towards new national concepts based on ethnicity. Furthermore, these were also promulgated by social strata outside clerical structures, such as the still emerging bourgeoisie or the nobility whose representatives were also aiming towards a broader participation within the Hungarian legal system. An imperial decree marked the official end of the Orthodox discrimination in comparison to the Roman-catholic and Greek-catholic church that was complained about before on the Temesvar assembly. Trying to integrate the “Illyrians” in the legal system, the Hungarian diet granted them civil rights and a broader political participation. Its further promise of religious freedom indicates that the Orthodox community was still officially perceived beyond ethnic characteristics, in order to prevent ethnicity-motivated disintegration within Hungary, despite of its emerging inner rifts grounded in ethnic criteria. Thus the 1790 assembly and the following years represent a transition period in terms of national identity, its mutual perception and its promulgating groups.

New Speak Syndrome in Post-War Romanian Culture
(collective traumas & individual therapies)

This article analyses some of the main consequences of what I have called the New Speak syndrome in Romanian post-war culture. Focusing, in the first section, on some theoretical aspects of this pathological phenomenon, the paper intends to surpass the common perspective which stresses particularly on New Speak’s rhetorical particularities (propaganda’s clichés and formulae), paying attention also to its effects at a deeper level, that of the collective identity and of the community’s mental pattern. One of the most important consequences of NS’s hegemony in its Romanian version is the fact that it “inspired” some experimentalist prose-writers (such as Radu Cosaşu, Norman Manea or Mircea Nedelciu), in their attempt to creatively reconsider the arbitrary relation between objects, people, names and stories. Apart of deconstructing propaganda’s clichés, these authors invented new games (such as a different relationship with the reader, based on handling the therapeutic resources of irony, cultural memory and intertextuality). Trying to answer the question “Why were (such) books read?”, the final section of the study considers the therapeutic functions of reading, in the context of the so-called “resistance through culture”.
