HOC SIGNO

The present study is focused mainly on the dominating figure and personality of Emperor Constantine the Great, aiming at observing and defining the features and keynotes of the Christian vocational leader, originating and acting in crux signum. Such a Christian vocational leader is the result of both divine election and continuous formation. The author
thoroughly shows how Constantine’s personality as a leader was shaped by his mother’s Christian views and education, and then relies on Lactantius’ description of Constantine’s personality in order to achieve a convincing portrait of the Christian educational model for the vocational leader.

The Philosophy and Seduction of Syracuse

I want to prove in this text that Plato is in an unique situation: he describes homosexual feelings in order to protect himself against. The sexual pleasure as such practiced outside the feeling of love is constantly depreciated. And Plato goes until refusing to sexual pleasure the name of afrodisia. The reason? This word derives from a divine day of name, so that it cannot designate something as despicable as sex. Then, it must be said that Plato does not mistake pleasure with sex. No matter how things are, it remains certain the fact that Platonic experience is an erotic-metaphysical one. It is, in the end, about a philosophy of love at least in the mature dialogues and the philosophy of love would reveal the transformation of love into philosophy. The fact that the experience of reference is homosexual, without any doubt, is true! But the fact that Plato goes till negativity, i.e. till surpassing this type of experience, it does not matter anymore? What des it mean to surpass this type of experience? Simple: it means to recognize it, not to live it. Simply to recognize it in its past source and in its future and creative fecundity of fantasy. Hence “Plato’s modernity”, a modernity that consists in establishing unsuspected boundaries (and, maybe, reckless) between eroticism and metaphysics.

“Confusion became a way of life”. The Security Dossier of the Poet Georg Hoprich

This article refers to the German poet from Romania, Georg Hoprich (1938-1969) and to his Security Dossier. By studying this dossier from the Security Archives, the literary historian Stefan Sienerth highlights and analyses aspects of the writers’ prosecution and of the literary censorship during the Communist period. The poet Georg Hoprich was accused of country betrayal, because he did not dedicate his work to the Socialist Romania, the accusations being based on delation and false testimony. He was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment, but he was released by amnesty after more than three years. Being unable to adapt to the everyday life, as he was still prosecuted by the Security, he committed suicide.

Dumitru Ţepeneag in the secret police files

The Monday Literary Club within the CNSAS Documentary Archive. Basic rules for organizing and developing a literary club.

The Monday Literary Club had a very important role in creating, educating, and shaping what the History of the Romanian Literature calls “Generation ‘80”. In a recent interview, Florin Iaru, one of the first and the most important members of this generation, tells us how he sees the activity and the role of the club within the age, but also the Romanian literature. Based on his opinion, on the one hand, the Monday Literary Club brought together very valuable people and tried to make the most of them, and on the other hand, the communist regime played a very important role in the poets’ life and poetry. I consider the Monday Literary Club very important for the Romanian history, not only from a literary point of view, but also because of its implications at the time, its strength in defending human rights, the freedom of speaking, the mere daily existence of a citizen who wants to express his opinions freely. This paper starts from my Research within the National Security Archives (CNSAS), which regards the communist implication in this literary club’s existence: collaboration notes and very interesting so called “informational” reports regarding the members of this club. It tries to argue how important was, and still is, the activity of the Monday Literary Club during the communist period, but also its literary, historical, and political implications for the time before it was forbidden and after its closure.

Possible Typologies in Contemporary Comedy

Comedies imply the existence of some typologies of characters that give flavor and individuality to this literary genre. This is the way in which the so-called type characters – characterized by defining features – appear. This work analyzes the
new theories on the characters’ typology from contemporary comedy which tends to lose its purity. Current critical approaches identify not only characters belonging to typical typologies of a comedy, but also types and characters taken from tragedy. Type-characters specific to comedies are either social types dominated by exaggerated vices or human types characterized by general representatives such as: the fool and the jester. From tragedy, we encounter in contemporary comedy the image of the hero – often a non-hero or, more accurately, a pseudo-hero and the incarnation of destiny – it appears in the present as the representation of God. Type characters are determined by the obvious traits that fail to exceed them, living in its stereotype. Thus, as works of border, contemporary comedies give birth to a character dominated by ambiguity and heterogeneity.

Culture and economics

What is culture? How to define economy? How can the relationships between them be defined and materialized? The central idea of the study is that culture, through its content and effects, represents the economy and the economy should represent culture. There are several present and perspective arguments for sustaining these considerations. Also, the notion of social profit is approached. Society and humanity are the ones that would benefit.

Eminescian poetic lexicology (I): „poetic tongue” and „poetic language”

The analysis follows the stages of development occurred within the theoretical frame of DLPE project (The Dictionary of Eminescu’s Poetic Language), undertaken at “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University of Iaşi by a research team from the Interdisciplinary Department of Socio-Humanistic Sciences. Our inquiry directs chiefly toward lax notions such as poetic sign and poetic significance, as they represent the actual DLPE minimal unities. Moreover, we take into consideration the subtle glide of the foregoing theory from a perspective oriented by semantic traits and lexical fields to a vision anchored by innovative
concepts such as imagistic field or diffuse semantic sphere. A presumptive mixture of iconic levels (handwriting icons, verbal icons, imaginary icons), the concept of poetic sign – within Mihai Eminescu’s particular frame of mind – evinces its broad complexity only when Perpessicius’ edition of complete works (and variants) and the poet’s own notebooks are collated. The gradual changes of method and cross-breedings of approaches during DLPE history compelled us to turn the original project to its sources, namely Dumitru Irimia’s book, Limbajul poetic eminescian (1979), and Tudor Vianu’s dictionary of Eminescu’s poetic figures. A careful reading of Irimia’s prefatory lines should revive the researcher’s 19th century frame of thinking, centred mainly on psychological assumptions; in any case, these anachronistic instances also go together with the new trend to re-stage Eminescu’s mind by drilling the manuscript pages.

The histories from „Prințul Ghica”

The study focuses on the historical novel, Prințul Ghica, written by Dana Dumitriu and its aim is to find out the multitude of histories within it .

I identified two concepts as the bases of this novel: ”the second reality” (Camil Petrescu’s concept) and ”psychological realism” (Henry James’concept). Dana Dumitriu applied these two concepts in her historical novel. The modern historical novel, as understood by Dana Dumitriu, stands where literature/fiction and history meet. She recreates (as ”artistical transfiguration”) historical documents through the multiplication of the perspectives and of the histories.

The conclusion of the study is that Dana Dumitriu’s historical novel is at the same time a valuable literary/fictional work and a historical document gathering different histories through different techniques and perspectives.

The Stylistic Issues of Dan Botta’ s Drama

Beside poetry and essays, Dan Botta also wrote dramas, which reflect his wealthy bookish culture. His dramas cannot be understood without reading his essays, which means an attachment of his literary work. Botta’s dramas are poetical and mythical, and he uses a sort of expressive means, like the use of symbols, the poetic image, the metaphor and repetition, that gives his text a lot of lyricism and musicality. Botta’s literary marks focus on the theme of fate, which can be found in every drama, and the central idea is that fame cannot be changed, and man is a confined being and this gives him a dramatism. Dan Botta focuses on the great theme as love and death, sacrifice and suffering, or charity and honor. These are the great themes of Botta’s dramas.

On ‘East-ethic’ Revisionism and ‘Aesthetic Autonomy’ in Post-December Literary Press (II)

In its turn, the ‘autonomist’ critique takes into consideration the inner value of the writing despite of the ‘moral profile’ of its author. The critical alternative of ‘aesthetics’ turns into a key strategy of decoding the so-called ‘collaborative’ texts of the totalitarian age by focusing on the fictional construct only and on its ways of ‘alluding’ the dominant Great History.

Keywords: revisionist drive, ethical ideology, ‘aesthetic autonomy’, iconic writer, literary canon, ‘collaborationist’ text.

Romanian Experiences of The Creative Bilingualism

The article aims at presenting a few Romanian experiences of the creative bilingualism, starting from Dumitru Chioaru’s study The Creative Bilingualism. The book, thoroughly organized, presents the bilingual experiences of nine Romanian writers, divided into three sections: Between Self-translation and Creative Bilingualism (Dimitrie Bolintineanu, Alexandru Macedonski, Panait Istrati), Avant-garde Experiences of Creative Bilingualism (Tristan Tzara, Benjamin Fondane, Ilarie Voronca, and Gherasim Luca) and Universal Bilingual Writers (Emil Cioran and Eugen Ionescu). The author does not intend to follow their evolution’s entire pathway, insisting on the moment of the shift from Romanian language to French, attempting to discover the reasons and consequences of their expatriation and also the differences brought in their work by the linguistical shift. An important advantage of the study consists in the excellent argumentative approach, exploiting in an intelligent way the biographical and bibliographical detail, relying also on a vast erudition and on a longeval applied and comparative reading experience.

Authors, Printers and Books in Sibiu

Sibiu can be considered one of the oldest cradles of the book and Romanian journalism, not only in Transylvania, but across the country.

Here, in 1544, Philip Moldoveanu printed the first book in Romanian – Lutheran Catechism, book that Joachim Craciun, bibliologue, called The Romanian Catechism.

The most popular Transylvanian writers of the studied period are the Saxons historians: Martin Eder Felmer and Joseph Caroli Eder. They published their works in the Sibiu printing houses, thereby contributing at the exploiting the documents about the history of Transylvania.

Among the most famous of the Sibiu printers can be mentioned: the printing house of the Barths, a true dynasty, whose work spans over a period of 130 years, the printing house Samuel Sardi and the one of the Hochmeisters.

A manuscrispt from the historian Ştefan Meteş

The manuscris, preserved by the County Service of the National Archives of Cluj, in the Ştefan Meteş archive Fund, in the fille nr. 80, represents a written memorial of David Prodan addressed to his superior, Ştefan Meteş, the head of the Regional Manager’s office of the State Archives from Cluj, wich reflects the sad situation in wich the institution and its employees are. The changes at the governmental level and the promotion in the under-secretary of State function of Ştefan Meteş, in the government of Iorga determined the forwardind of the document. The relation between David Prodan and Ştefan Meteş was at that time, still friendly, normal, as it resulted from the written ideas of David Prodan in his memorandum where he claimed some natural rights, but quite impossible to be carried out in the economical situation the country was. The claims of the memorial were: presenting the real situation in the working place, the increase of salary and the obtaining of a scholarship in Wienna, the getting of a new building for the archives and changing of the office he worked in from a simple place, where the documents were heaped up in boxes, in one in wich the scientific research could be developed, at least as in other similar institutions from the country

Historical monuments from Sibiu County, a continuing hurdle in front of city “modernisation”

Sibiu town is one of the most valuable and well-preserved medieval town from central and eastern European area, being mentioned in most of the profile charts realized at the continental level and also in the recommendations of specialists in the field. However, in the history of the city’s historic monuments have been difficult periods, local authorities (the Communist and the posdecembriste ones) were not interested in protecting and conservation of this inestimable value heritage, destroying buildings or entire protected areas, in the name of a misguided modernization.

Unfortunately, with all opposition of locals specialists in the field, gathered within the County Office for National Cultural Heritage Sibiu and Zonal Commission of Historical Monuments, Assemblies and Sites from Eastern Transylvania, important parts of the architectural reserve were entirely or partially destroyed.

In this article we tackle with many tragic episodes in the history of the monuments of Sibiu, the demolition of the entire area comprising Gării Square – Teclu Street (partially) – Hurmuzachi and Constituţiei streets, started after 1985, under the fake supposition of regulating the traffic in the area, partial demolition of the earth fortification from Corneliu Coposu Boulevard, and the demolition project of building located in Pulberăriei, Turnului, Valea Mare streets.

The base on which I have developed my article was the study of archive, many unpublished documents that are thrown away behind the lockers and offices from the County Office for Culture and National Heritage Sibiu.
