The present paper, originally delievered as a presentation occasioned by the 2014 National Conference on “Religious Text and Discourse”, aims to perform an analysis of the power and the inner light of the word, thus empowering and enlightening both the gifted speaker and the mindful listener. The former part of our study pays attention to verbal and non-verbal dimensions of communication, particularly in religious discourse, whereas the latter section provides a multidimensional analysis and semantic interpretation of the word in religious contexts.

The concept of „Praxis” according to Duns Scotus

In Scotus’ writings we often come across the term „praxis”. He speaks of practical theology, practical philosophy, practical logic, etc. This research attempts to capture the different nuances of praxis, in order to better understand Scotus’ thinking. The Scotist voluntarism, in harmony with the concept of freedom as operative power, builds up the personality of the individual and a sense of history, claiming the primacy of practicality (praxis) in all spheres: political, civil, religious and theological.

Philosophical aesthetics in Lignum vitae by Bonaventure of Bagnoregio

In order to comprehend the meaning of Bonaventure’s aesthetics, the first requirement is to outline its structural elements. It has three parts, containing reflections on the origin, the mystery of death and glorification of Jesus Christ. Each part is divided into twelve “fruits”, the equivalent of chapters.

In terms of theme, the work refers primarily to the compassion and humility toward Christ, and secondarily to acquiring virtues obtained through contemplation.

In Bonaventure’s philosophical thinking, it is impossible to pinpoint an aesthetic approach in the current meaning of this concept.

Nonetheless, it is still possible to discover several starting points for elaborating reflections that can be included within the double perspective of a philosophy of beauty and of a theme such as the Tree of Life. It is almost redundant to remind that these conceptual approaches should always be analyzed taking into account the context of their emergence.

Female identity formation: from the pathological image to the autonomous I using the example of the protagonist from Marielouise Janssen-Jurreit’s novel ” Das Verbrechen der Liebe in der Mitte Europas” [”The crime of love in the heart of Europe”]

The novel Das Verbrechen der Liebe in der Mitte Europas [The crime of love in the heart of Europe] by Marie Louise Janssen-Jurreit presents a German-Polish love story, eight years before the fall of the Iron Curtain. This love story is associated with a journey into the past to traumatic family secrets. The passionate struggle for love doesn’t want to be defeated by historical facts and political and ideological confrontations. The action of the novel begins in 1981 and covers an interweaving of love, contemporary history and wounds caused by the National Socialism and Leninism / Stalinism. In the center of the action is a protagonist who is on the search for identity and is undergoing a process of self-rediscovery. The present paper aims to follow the identity formation of the main figure, from a pathological phase at the beginning to an autonomous I at the end of the novel. Aspects of cultural feminism, psychoanalysis and feminist therapy were used as theoretical basis.

Keywords: cultural feminism, psychoanalysis, feminist therapy, search for identity, identity, Iron Curtain, autonomous I.

Faulkner’s reception in Romania

Along the years much has been written on Faulkner. Several books and numerous essays have been published on Faulkner’s influence on world literature and in what follows I will attempt to shed a little light on the impact of his work in Romania. I would like to illustrate how his influence has been perceived among different Romanian scholars depending on the political social and cultural contexts. I will limit my analysis to a few major works which introduced the Southern writer to the Romanian readers, in a chronological order: Sorin Alexandrescu’s monograph William Faulkner, Ana Cartianu’s Eseuri de literatură engleză şi americană, Virgil Stanciu’s Orientari în literatura sudului american, Radu Lupan’s Text şi context and last but not least, Mircea Mihăieş’s Cartea eşecurilor and Ce rămane. William Faulkner şi misterele ţinutului Yoknapatawpha.

Max Blecher: from the livid worlds to the illuminated super-worlds

Following Jung’s footsteps, the patient in Max Blecher’s novels accesses the basis of the „collective unconscious” making the „archetype” a crucible of the self, and in the slipstream of Durand’s theories, the narrators juggle with the anthropological structures of the imaginary, gracefully taking advantage of the „fantastic function”. The writing mediates now between reality and dream, causing the osmosis and highlighting in depth the similarities, for the disease has released into the world a creature with the consistency of spectres. The text, thus, becomes the liaison area, „neutral” at wartime (during disease), it is the womb-like „burrow” which hides in its aestheticizing and purifying trenches the sometimes baroque volutes of the sentence, only to reveal the ideal identity of the narrator.

Innocence and Initiation in Ian McEwan’s Novels

The narrative work of Ian McEwan, one of the most widely recognized authors of contemporary British fiction, is quite varied, as his literary style has undergone substantial development in the course of his career. Although each of his works is specific in a way, there are some motifs which link them thematically; among the frequently recurring themes are those of childhood, adolescence, family relationships and initiation. But whereas the Romantic poets had underlined the innocence and frailty of the child, the early and mid-Victorian novelists were more concerned with denouncing the material and psychological plight of children in society. The image of childhood visualized by the Romantic poets was often at odds with the abject squalor and cruelty suffered by the young inhabitants of urban England as described in Dickens’s Oliver Twist or David Copperfield. McEwan highlights that age-old dilemma of how to come to terms with the transition from a child’s perception of never-ending time to the adult’s ever-growing awareness that one’s own time is finite, as we discuss within this essay, taking into consideration several novels, such as The Cement Garden and Atonement. If the transition is painful, we may glean some comfort from the knowledge that the theme of childhood and adolescence and the attempts to capture the sense of loss that accompanies entry into adulthood have also produced some of the finest literature in English over the last decades.

Paul Goma. Adameva: The Autoprojection of the Creative Self (Part II)

Representing a part of a large study, the text aims to illustrate the metamorphoses of the creative self, bending towards the inner conflict, resolved in the light of awareness. Paul Goma’s excess of sincerity is perceived as a sin, but he assumes the past equally with all its disappointments and achievements. In addition, he develops a whole theory on achrony, on flat time, rebuilding an identity, but having at the same time the function of a reply to the Communist System.

Thus, in the middle of the positive slope, we see the emergence of two parallel lines, visible and with no trace of disbelief, written in gold ink: personal history (personal tragedy) and general history (historical wave of events), the latter tending to destroy the first one by assimilating it without mercy. And perhaps, in the absence of a memory and a vigilant awareness, the disaster would be inevitable, but Paul Goma exercises his (paradigmatic) memory and testifies.

The author is aware that the reference to a particular time and space acknowledges a structure of existence. Thus he revives, by means of remembering and eidetically, the crucial moments of the life. However these are not just the moments of a single life and this fact honors him in the light of this balance of profit and loss: the narrator accounts, in fact, an entire historical period. He moves from I to the others and stays alive, according to Tzvetan Todorov’s happy assertion, not necessarily for the sake of living, but on account of having a support for memory and making it possible to be told.

Ion D. Sîrbu and the dissident dystopian imaginary

The article analyzes Ion D. Sîrbu’s short stories published during his lifetime, under the strict and diffuse censorship of Ceauşescu’s regime. These stories are emblematic for the unity of the author’s political imaginary, visible in his posthumous novels, but also in Sîrbu’s diary and essays. The article seeks to demonstrate that Sîrbu’s short stories belong to the dissident style and themes, and that there is no disparity between his public figure and his innner self.

Ciuleandra

Ciuleandra (the Romanian traditionl dance) becomes a macrometaphor in the eponymous novel by Liviu Rebreanu, and it symbolizes the instinctual and morbid play of the acts of Puiu Faranga’s psychic. The paper hereof aims at confirming whether Puiu falls or not into the category of the instinctual individual, as well as if Rebreanu failed or not to modernize the Romanian novel. In the same time and at the same degree, it also comprises an analysis of the temporality of the novel, regarded in relationship with the acts of the protagonist’s psychic.

Dada Aesthesis or the Art of Contradiction

In the present paper our main focus is to point out that Dadaism, as a challenging movement, will impose an anarchist, yet paradoxically supporting outlook on pure art, and on culture in its countercultural and anti-cultural forms. By means of this dynamic way of relating to the tradition of modernity, Dadaism becomes a second-level culture, a semiotic system centered on the desacralization of all the prestige markers of Art as an institution, validating and legitimizing “the sign of negated signs” (Lotman) through the parodic and ironic palimpsest, contaminating itself with the discontinuity of modernism per se and with the “tradition of rupture“ and “betrayal“ (Compagnon).

A Metaphor of Form in 1863: mărgăritărelele [“little pearls”]

The article remakes the history of an aesthetic representation, that is, to mărgăritărelele (meaning both “little pearls” and “lily of the valley”), the title given by Vasile Alecsandri to a cycle of poems published in 1863. As a metaphor of form, this image is rooted on a double tradition. On the one hand, it drives back to the European cultural heritage, chiefly to the Renaissance florilegia of commonplaces (which actually were published under the title marguerites), on the other, a folkloric tradition, which employs “the string of pearls” as a trope, in order to represent an indeterminate advance of narration. Through its connotations, the metaphorization of literary forms opened the possibility for a new appreciation of literary works, which meant privileging fragmentarianism, de-contextualization, and freedom of interpretation. My analysis is trying to define the role of this representation in the dis-coupling of aesthetic from contingent experiences as well as in the emancipation of the “pure” values of beauty from those of down-to-earth life, in the context a Romanian culture that, around 1860, was striving to establish an autonomous field for art.

Keywords: metaphorization of forms, aesthetic representations, Vasile Alecsandri, mărgăritărele (little pearls/ lily of the valley), marguerites.

Philosophical tabloidization: Sloterdijk vs. Habermas & Co.

There exists, condensed inside the philosophical [and] tabloidization effect, a light dose of lifestyle, celebrity, entertainment and scandal, which leads one to also accept, through the notion of skandalon, a certain Biblical charge, a score, a stumble and a parallel understanding of its sense, being at the same time invested with the notion of “bait” or philosophical limit. If the philosophical locus seemed to self- contain balancing determinants for free, constraint- lacking positioning, with increased allowance for debate and public reformulations of sense, without trying to repress ideatic inflammations or theoretically “inflamed” skirmishes/controversies, Sloterdijk vs. Habermas &Co, situated on the edge (and stumbling upon) the 1999 moment, are articulating a benchmark sequence able to (philosophically) predict the apocalyptic air of sensationalism soon to pervade the medium of German philosophy.

Christians, Jews, and Muslims during Middle Ages. Conflict and cooperation in the Mediterranean Area

The impact of the Early Islam on West European polities is a very controversial issue. On economic grounds, the conquest of Western Mediterranean Sea by Muslims and its transformation into an inner Muslim lake in the 8th century AD was the decisive historical factor that pushed the European economy to slow and painful backwardness. On cultural grounds, the Islamic conquest forced the civilization to move to the Northern parts of the European continent and to cut from Hellenistic sources of Antiquity, forging a new road towards a Medieval civilization dominated by Germanic elements. Although the thesis is not false on economic grounds, it pays little attention to the important cultural transactions ongoing on the Mediterranean shores and that shaped the philosophy and religion of the whole area.

Aliaa Magda Elmahdy – The Body as Manifesto

During the Arab Spring, the nude photograph of the student Aliaa Magda Elmahdy has gone viral shortly after it was posted on her personal blog. Millions of views have demonstrated the polarity of society based on this image. The entire national political spectrum has harshly criticised her and declared that her action is situated outside of the context of Egyptian protests. However, mass-media has portrayed her as a revolutionary figure. The political message of her self-nude has transcended the interests of Egyptian political parties. Elmahdy quit her studies and decided to go abroad, so that her message of liberation would be accessible to everyone. Thus, the manifesto nude of this Egyptian woman has become convincing for the representatives of moderate female emancipation, as well as for radical feminist representatives.
