Les Jeux sont faits! Cărtărescu by Cortázar

This paper offers an interpretation of Mircea Cărtărescu’s short story REM through the perspective of the post-modern palimpsest derived from Julio Cortázar’s End of the Game. The dialogue to which Cărtărescu co-opts Cortázar is read not as an inter-textual post-modern quotation, but as a self-legitimating attempt of Cărtărescu to build an intrinsic, self-sufficient textual coherence.

Legitimizing structures in the rhetoric of chilean modernism: creationism

The paper analyses the patterns and forms of aesthetic legitimation typical to Creacionismo (Creationism), a poetic movement promoted by the Chilean poet Vicente Huidobro. The poet’s ingenious personality and his innovating spirit left the mark of genuine cultural synthesis within the dynamics of the Hispanic-American modernism. Huidobro provides Hispanic literature with a unique, noteworthy and authentic configuration within a cultural field that witnessed the dissemination and the clashes of the 20th century’s avant-garde and modernist movements. The patterns exhibited by the creationist manifestos confirm an original spirit, brimming with cosmopolitanism and creativity, a holistic intellectual consciousness, inaugural visionariness and a well-articulated critical and theoretical groundwork, further illustrated by the poetic output.

The Morphology of the Reading Writer: An Application

The paper discusses the creative profile of Alberto Manguel, the author of A History of Reading, from the point of view of a particular creative family: that of writers who define themselves as primarily readers, a family that Argentine
seems to favour in its modern culture. The analysis follows both significant details of Manguel’s autobiography and the main lines of his History…in order to point the convergence of life and literature, of reading and living, as far as Manguel’s creative perspective is concerned.

Tomás Saraceno, The Art-gentinian architect of the air

Tomás Saraceno is one of the most well-known Argetinian artist worldwide. He studied architecture as well as visual arts and since then has shown the utmost interest in relating his art to various scientific fields such as aeronautics, chemistry, biology, ecology, astrophysics or astronomy. He could thus reshape scientific notions into original installations, modular or sculptural cells, balloons or suspended environments, all built at a large scale. He has a possessionlesss nomad view of social and urban space and therefore focused especially on the complexity and sculptural potential of the aerial environment, whose intrinsec dynamism avoids by far the fixity of the terrestrial urban locations, together with their geographical, political, social and racial boundaries. Saraceno can be considered a visionary artist because of his futuristic speculation of celestial space, which will probably be the only available environment for urban, social and technological development of the future metropolitan areas.

The Academic Setting: Aspects of Pragmatic Competence and Transfer in Inter-Cultural Communication

Starting from the principle of communicative efficiency, the present paper reviews current research on pragmatic competence and, against that background, examines nonnative students’ (NNS) pragmatic competence and pragmatic transfer in academic inter-cultural communicative actions. Despite a certain universal pragmatic knowledge shared by all speakers, the present paper sustains that nonnative English students’ pragmatic competence in English (L2) can be significantly improved unless culture-specific knowledge from native (L1) intra-cultural communication situations is transferred to situations of L2 intercultural communication.

Keywords: communicative efficiency, pragmatic competence, nonnative students, academic inter-cultural communicative actions, universal pragmatic knowledge

Importance of English loanwords in Romanian business vocabulary

The unprecedented global technical and economic progress where the United States of America holds supremacy, imposed, in the process of globalization, the necessity of accepting a single language ? English ? as means of communication.
As a result of the contact with the English language, Romanian current vocabulary has been undergoing, for more than two decades, significant transformations due to the massive borrowing of English words, some meant to fill lexical gaps particularly in the field of economics. These loanwords of English origin did not bring any change upon the grammar structure of the Romanian language but, nevertheless, they cannot be disregarded or overlooked. The present paper brings into discussion the issue of the importance English loanwords had upon the Romanian business vocabulary.

Approaches of the Topic of Nihilism in the Thought of Friedrich Nietzsche and F.M. Dostoevsky

Nietzsche’s thinking directs its mechanism of metaphorical philosophy towards the excessive capitalization of the human paradigm up to the dionysical jump in the superhuman dimension. Thus, the superman is for Nietzsche the peak of the progressivity which emanates from the soils of humanity which tends towards the overcoming of its own limits. This ideal, opposed in Nietzsche’s vision, to the decadent and nihilist Christian model, would become the center around
which will gravitate the future of humanity. Stepping on the same road of the re-assessment of the human being, Dostoievski will stop at the utopia of the superman, of the god-man. The Russian thinker will explore the eschatology of
this ideal by capturing its end, the irreversible fall in self-idolatry. Here the freedom, without divinity, the man who is idolizing himself are arriving to the cataclysm of the ontological and moral decadence.

The International Meeting “Thinking Europe”, the 13th edition: “How to be thought history and literature to form the european people?”
Education and human development to form the european people.
Strokes with alarming consequences

The speech aimed to reveal the very difficult situation of the salary, totally inappropriate, for the teachers from Romania, the ones officially invited to form, to educate “the european man”. Hereinafter, but closely related to the shortcomings revealed in the shaping of the european man, we referred to giving up, nearly complete, in the higher economic education in Romania, but also in other countries of the disciplinary study of economic history. What serious problems develop such a “negligence” and how can they be solved?

The European Poetry Marathon, the Feminine Version

The present article is a description of the 2013 European Poetry Marathon from Braşov, from its concept, history, tradition to its very organization and performance this year. Organized by an academic institution, namely the Braşov Faculty of Letters in collaboration with the Braşov City Hall, this European Poetry Marathon has gained in time a remarkable standing and reputation, being one of Romania’s most visibile and esteemed poetry events. This year, the concept of the festival involved only women poets – that is, poetry written by contemporary female poets from Europe, disregarding their age and individual orientations. Thus, 34 women poets from 10 European countries have read uninterruptedly for about 12 hours, inaugurating a poetry event with a concept never approached before in the Romanian
literary system.

Latinity – language, spirituality and identity

The cultural phenomenon of Latinity was the subject of the Conference “Re-construing the Latinity” which took place in Sibiu and carried out to highlight many topics about the central concept, but also the so-called “Peripheral Latinities”. During the conferences the main idea was that Latin spirit is not only the language as a vehicle of communication, it is also
the link through which countries will prove the membership in this large community. The topics in the panels have included heterogeneous areas like: literature and language, theology, cultural studies, theater, communication and media, history, politics, economics, and medicine. The papers presented in panels reflected the increased interest for the manifestation of the Latin spirit in multiple axes of research.

A Plea for Export Criticism

My study is a plea for what might be called “export criticism”, i.e. that critical discourse which retains some relevance beyond the strictly local, regional or national context where it has arisen. In this respect, I carry out an inventory of both external and internal obstacles impeding the promotion of Romanian literary criticism abroad. As regards external obstacles, the most important are the few translations of Romanian literary works into languages of international circulation (especially English and French), the absence of a recent history of Romanian literature written in a foreign language, the difficulties of assigning Romanian literature in a disciplinary niche (as an object of analysis, it seems to be at the periphery of both Romance and East-European studies) and the poor communication between Romanian and foreign researchers. Regarding internal obstacles, mention should be made of the methodological belatedness of Romanian literary criticism, its essayistic tradition and a certain dogmatism which renders it incompatible with the dominant pluralism on the international market. However, the thesis I attempt to underscore in the present paper is that Romanian literature and criticism not only can be, but they already are areas of international relevance and academic interest.

A Complete Critical „Experience”

The study analyses Eugen Simion s book on Romanian pre-romantic poets, „Dimineața poeților”, focusing on the innovatory premises of its critical inquiry. First published in 1980, the book soon became an object of debate between the traditional critical paradigm – represented as such by Șerban Cioculescu – and the new critical inquiries, inspired by the French Nouvelle Critique. Gaston Bachelard, Roland Barthes, Georges Poulet or Jean-Pierre Richard are permenant, but flexible, sources of inspiration for the close-reading in „Dimineața poeților”. Eugen Simion s study stands out among the most spectacular re-interpretations of outdated writers in the postwar Romanian criticism.

Romanian Literary Criticism in European Context: New Perspectives and Interpretations

The present article focus on Andrei Terian’s book, Theories, Methods and Reading Strategies in Romanian Literary Criticism and Historiography from T. Maiorescu to E. Lovinescu, defending the idea that, between 1870-1930, Romanian literary criticism was dominated by a positive-evolutionary paradigm, wich is circumscribed by four main characteristics: the obsessive concern with method, the generalizing taxonomy practice, “directional criticism” and historicism.

Myths and mythoids in Mircea Ivănescu’s Poetry

My case study is represented by the poetry of Mircea Ivănescu, as I presume it embodies the most adequate example of a paradoxical condition: while it pretends to be a biographical and secularized annotation of the everyday life of the everyman, it nevertheless dissimulates a deep mythical structure, composed of remnants of ancient myths combined with recent cultural myths, mostly received via Anglo-Saxon (and also French and German, even though in a lesser extent) cultural channels. The presence of this „mythoids” has been noticed before, at least by Alexandru Cistelecan (in his Mircea Ivănescu monograph from 2003) and by myself, in my study on Mircea Ivănescu from 2007, but no extensive study has been made on the nature, structure, and function of this mythical underframe. The conclusions drawn from the case of Mircea Ivănescu’s poetry could be extended afterwards for the most interesting cases of Romanian recent poetry – since it experiences an even more acute discrepancy between the apparent secularization of the world and the formation of new mythical and spiritual structures (the New Age spirituality, mainly – but not exclusively) which poetry has to react with.

Paul Zarifopol or the Essay against Criticism

Paul Zarifopol (1874-1934) could be described as a notable case of misreading in the field of Romanian literary history. Although alotted generous space in most histories of Romanian literature (from E. Lovinescu to G. Călinescu and Nicolae Manolescu), Zarifopol is often presented as an „anticlassical” literary critic, with no particular method and no systemic thinking, an impetuous and subjective writer of feuilletons. Collating critical opinions of his contemporaries, as well as fragments from private letters, this paper analyses the way in which Zarifopol deals with his own work and aims to prove that he deliberatly chose to be an essayist, and not a literary critic. Zarifopol’s criticism stems from a generalized skepticism, as the only expression of intelectual freedom which is possible in a postwar world.

A Winter Night’s Dream: “The North” in Eminescu’s Works

The present essay represents an assessment of the poetic figures and signs which constellate around the Northern space, the way it is imagined and described in Mihai Eminescu’s prose and poetry. First of all, it evaluates G. Calinescu’s notion of ‘boreal vision’ within the context of great romantic themes; from this perspective, Eminescu’s obvious taste for the Northern mythology and for wintry scenes can bear the appearance of mere clichés and cultural conventions. However, our point is that, twining the Romanian epic from its onset, the Northern narrative scheme and its correspondent figures have always accompanied the artistic process, most of them being able to convert into great symbols of Eminescu’s personal myth. Such spectacular conversions are to be found in the way Northern characters (King North, Queen Midnight, Princess Pole Star/Poesis, The Bard/ Skald) and arctic signs (the pole star, the diamond) can reach the deepest recesses of Eminescu’s basic imagery.

Alexandru Muşina, “Budila Express”. An exercice of “close reading”

The present article is an essay and an analysis of Alexandru Muşina’s poetry, focused on his methods and his themes such as they are approached in his best-known long poem, Budila Express. Between the concepts that he used, such as experimentalism, irony, subversion, the such called trivial poetry, the author emphasizes the importance of satire, the main expression of Muşina’s critical attitude. Thus, Muşina created an intelligent, social, comic though bitter poetry, masterfully learned and practiced. The article also shows how the communist environment and the censorship were incentives for poet’s imagination and, on the other hand, how this biting game of hide and seek has become an important mark of
Muşina’s poetry.

Mateiu I. Caragiale: „Strangeness” and Canonical Value

The article analyses Mateiu I. Caragiale’s work in the light of the modern relationship between strangeness and beauty, which, pointed out by Edgar Allan Poe (‘there is no exquisite beauty without some strangeness in the proportion’), and, later, Baudelaire (‘Le Beau este toujours bizarre’), was made into a critical principle by Harold Bloom’s The Western Canon. Taking into account the modern equivalence between eccentricity and literary value, the writing of Mateiu Caragiale reveals the fundaments of its power of fascination and establishes its relevance as a turning point for the Romanian literature as an aesthetic phenomenon.

Romanian Literature after World War II in a Book by Marin Sârbulescu

Marin Sârbulescu’s prose is a very good example of healthy Romanian literature after World War II: it pretends to follow the official directions but, in fact, it undermines them. His short-stories are not only comic, but also affluent in political hints, building up a fancy parody of the communist regime and its stupid rules. The writers and the compulsory method of creation, the propaganda, the levelling of human beings, the class hatred are some of his topics. In order to get rid of censorship, the book contains three texts which seem more time-serving and are placed them at the end, but even those writings contain a very subtle satire, hard to depict by the unimaginative readers.

The 80’s Generation and their Short Prose Fiction

The article signed by Ovidiu Moceanu brings forth the moment when the 80’s generation started its affirmation, and it emphasizes the implications of the young writers’ interest in short prose fiction. The return to short prose fiction does not equate a transitory preoccupation and, when a generation aims at revitalizing its structures, one cannot talk about an epiphenomenon. It is a generally accepted fact that the previous decade had focused on the Romanesque convention. Caiete critice (no. 1-2/1983) of the Viaţa Românească Journal marks an essential moment in the evolution of the novel and accomplishes a significant image from within, from the perspective of those “involved”. The survey on the situation of “today’s Romanian novel” is conducted at a time when people talk about the “resurrection of the short prose fiction”. Terms such as „text”, „textualization”, „experiment” abound and the preoccupations for finding new narrative solutions prevail. The theory the writers report themselves to (the nouveau roman, the texts of the “Tel Quel” group, R. Barthes’ writings, generative grammars) is, undoubtedly, interesting.

In the ’80s, a fertile route can be glimpsed by means of books belonging to Mircea Nedelciu (Aventuri într-o curte interioară / Adventures in an Inner Yard, Efectul de ecou controlat/ The Effect of Controlled Echo, Amendament la instinctul proprietăţii/ Amendment to the Ownership Instinct, Zmeura de câmpie/ Field Raspberry), Gheorghe Crăciun (Acte originale/copii legalizate/ Original Documents/ Legalized copies), Alexandru Vlad (Aripa grifonului/ The Gryphon’s Wing), Sorin Preda (Povestiri terminate înainte de a începe/ Stories ended before beginning), George Cuşnarencu (Tratat de apărare permanentă Treaty for Permanent Defence), Nicolae Iliescu (Departe, pe jos…, Far away, walking…..), Aurel Antonie (Mozaicul/ The Mosaic), Carmen Francesca Banciu, Tudor Dumitru Savu, I. Lăcustă, some of the authors published in the anthology Desant ‛83 etc., many being on the way to their editorial debut at the time, but well/known figures in journals.

Single women in the novels of Virginia Woolf and Hortensia Papadat-Bengescu

Modernity in literature brings about, especially at the beginning of the XXth century, a novelty as regards the hypostases of femininity, namely the single woman.

The single woman is portrayed, in the characters present in the novels of Virginia Woolf and Hortensia Papadat-Bengescu, as a young, intelligent, educated lady in search of her gender identity. In order to live in harmony with herself and because she cannot accept the patriarchal rule in the family of the mid XIXth century, she makes choices like: financial independence and refusal to submit to men, implicitly denying marriage.

The single women in the novels by Virginia Woolf – Evelyn Murgatroyd, Doris Kilman, Lily Briscoe or Miss La Trobe – and Hortensia Papadat-Bengescu – Laura, Hilda Gert, Minette Persu or Nory Baldovin – are portrayed as unconventional, professionally autonomous and trying to shape their lives outside the traditional, restrictive pattern shaped by false moral values and convictions imposed by the authoritarian power of the men in the family. In spite of their rebellion against gender boundaries, the single women accept their femininity, but, at the same time, cultivate their masculinity, choosing to integrate feminine and masculine traits into a balanced entity.

Keywords: single women, patriarchal values, gender identity, the power of the men in marriage, femininity and masculinity.

Fervently working for the wellbeing and happiness of his nation”:

Inochentie Micu-Klein (1700-1768)

Abstract

The present study offers the Romanian translation of the first German written texts of the Sibiu City Magistrate. Dating back to the year 1556 these documents have not been published until now, therefore their translation reveals an interesting perspective on the city life as well as on the relationships between the citizens and the City Council. The study also describes the particularities and difficulties of the translation process such as they occured in the case of this text type and explains the translators’ choice of the adequate equivalence.

The history of the autocephalous Romanian Orthodox Church

Romanian Orthodox Church as a social and religious institution in the former Romanian feudal states has combined her existence with the historical steps of the Romanian nation, acquiring forms of organization related to that time, focusing with success in time, without giving up on the Orthodox essence who gave her a Romanian cope. We find on every page of our people history, on the feudal era, the presence of the Church who was in the service of state interests and the Romanian people. The Romanian Orthodox Church has become the church of the people, governing herself independently by her own laws developed under Orthodox canon law rules and principles.

Administering and leading herself in a autocephalous way, the Orthodox Church always kept the dogmatic unity, canonical with the Eastern Orthodox Church and he acknowledged the honorary law of the Ecumenical Patriarch of Byzantium «first representative of the Orthodox Church”, equal to the other heads of the Autocephalous Orthodox Churches.

After a long struggle and interventions, in the nineteenth century the Romanian Orthodox Church was recognized as autocephalous institution, and in our age it has the right to be organized as a autocephalous patriarchate (1925).

The tentative data of Transilvania magazine (II)

This study tries to analyze the last details regarding the appearance of Transilvania magazine. The last decisions were taken in the fall of 1867 and in the first part of 1868. The General Assembly of the Association periodic of 1867 had decided that the last details regarding the magazine were to be resolved by the Central Committee. It organized various sessions in which it tried to resolve the tasks given by the General Assembly in Cluj.

The Central Committee decided, after fervent discussions, the name, the apparition style and the editor of the magazine. Choosing George Barițiu as editor of Transylvania periodic was not random. He was a strong sustainer of the magazine from 1861, and also a Secretary I of the Association, a position that had as task to draw up the official periodic of the newly cultural society of the Romanians from Transylvania.

Gypsy presence in Transylvania. Centuries 15-16.

This study represents a short presentation of the involvement of the ethnic community of gypsies in the economic and commercial life of Transylvania in the centuries 15-16.They had a special situation within this space being considered free people who had the right to move here and there paying only a tax to the state. However slavery is attested although restrained as a phenomenon; gypsies were in the possession of monasteries or noblemen or in the Transylvanian feuds of the Romanian rulers where they had various activities.

The Hungarian documents mention them under the name of cygány and the German documents call them zigeuner, attesting groups of gypsies ruled by names such as: senior Emaus, Toma the Bulgarian/the Polgar, the rulers Florian and Benedict etc. The gypsies from Transylvania were involved in various economic activities like: raising animals, especially horses so necessary for their journeys, working on the fields, manufacturing the iron and the wood and they got orders to repair or produce equipment necessary for the army;we can find them involved in producing goods for the market but also seeking for gold in the rivers or as salt manufacturers. Due to their musical sense they got involved in the noblemen’s entertainment. We can find them as infantrymen in the army and in the law system we can find them as executors.

The present study pursued to accomplish an excursion in the economic activities carried by the ethnic community of the gypsies, fact that attests both their presence and their value on the Transylvanian territory in the 15th and 16th century.

Writers in political regims

The current economic crisis makes us possible to raise questions about the role of literature under political regimes in France, the Occupation certainly being the most studied and contested period. First of all, in this article we ask ourselves whether literature transforms itself under a political regime, whether writers find in literature the perfect instrument to defend themselves against a political regime, or whether they just aim at making themselves noticed due to a certain political attitude.

We insist here on the specificity of the French literature developed under the German occupation, on the reactions of some French writers. The analysis of the ideological engagement of French writers or the analysis of their neutrality will bring us toward the study of the war of ideologies; this war triggers the “Jewish problem” and the conflict between French writers.

Keywords: engaged literature, French writers under German occupation, French writers between Nazism and communism, the Jewish problem, Nazi philosophy, Drieu la Rochelle, Robert Brasillach, Louis-Ferdinand Céline, etc.

First Debates on a Quality Romanian Television: From Implicit to Explicit Ideology

Matching the dominant cultural discourse of a given society at a given moment with one particular discourse – in our case that of the Romanian Television – is able to put into light the assessment of the “quality”, as in the syntagm “quality TV”. This paper shows how, in the wake of the “remobilization” era, at the beginning of the 70s, debates on the form and the content of TV programmes conceived as part of a public service intermingled and finally succumbed under the weight of ideological pressure. Between 1069 and 1979, television development cannot be the mission of only professionals, because it grows more and more a political issue. Broadly speaking, in no more than two years, what seemed to be a professional issue with its own rules becomes increasingly the expression of the political endeavor to lay hands on all public fields.
