Mihail Fărcăşanu and the pedagogy of  freedom

In this study, the authors surveys the life and works of Mihail Fărcăşanu, one of the leaders of Romania’s democratic emigration after 1945. Keeping distance from Gheorghe Tătărăscu’s autocratic liberalism, Fărcăşanu is, alongside Dinu Brătianu, a pillar of the liberal thought vindicating from the European aspirations of the generation from 1848. His exile thus echoes after one century the active emigration of I.C. Brătianu and C.A. Rosetti. A student of Carl Schmitt’s (his paper published in Romania will pe titled „Social Monarchy”), he will not be nevertheless a follower of Schmitt’s, as he will not accept and justify the usefulness of tyranny with judicial arguments. For the first time in Romania, the author of the study makes reference to some of Mihail Fărcăşanu’s yet unpublished works (namely of the study on Freedom and existence).

The noble House of Balassa: origins, evolution and history. Centuries 13-18

In the researches on the noble elites from Transylvania the study upon vayvoda Emeric Balassa, a representative of a leading noble house, was deepened with implications in various areas of the Transylvanian society. The researches also raised interest in certain Hungarian or Romanian hypotheses regarding the origin of this noble house. This study represents the synthesis of a complex study which is still in work, on the Balassa noble house. The study will materialize in a chapter of my PhD thesis with a family tree attached. The present study extends only over a period of four or five centuries. Studying the ancestors of vayvoda Emeric Balassa, the study arrived to a first member of this family attested in 1229 by a document that mentioned Detre Ispan of Zoulum. The descending evolution of the family generated its split into several family trees: Gyarmath, Kekkew, Ibufalva, Andrásfalva, etc which designated the possesion owned. But the name of the noble house is attested for the first time in a document from 1364 which mentions Balász/Blasy which indicates the transition from the using of the name of each person accompanied by the name of the predecessor to the use of the person’s name and the name of Balász/Blasy which will become the name of this noble family whose branch was transmitted to nowadays.

An Anthropological Approach of the Mythological References to the Gold Mining At Roşia Montană and Bucium Şasa

The present paper proposes an anthropological approach of the mining legends, myths, beliefs and superstitions fromtow villages of Apuseni Mountins, Roşia Montană şi Bucium Şasa, in order to emphasize the local guideline regarding thegold exploitation. The subject seemed important to me when, during some recent field research at Roşia Montană. In thisvillage situated in the North-Western part of Romania, in Transylvania, an extremely controversial mining project forexploitation of mineral resources aims to deplete this gold deposit in a period of 16-17 years. In these circumstances, Iidentified in the opponents’ speech certain expressions of immemorial superstitions about the inhabitants’ relationshipwith the area’s mineral resources, as well as beliefs about the way these resources could be used so that their lives andwealth would not be endangered. Our anthropological approach of the miners’ work culture emphasize that the minersaccess to the gold research is regulated by an ethical code of work, transmitted by word of mouth.

Among the effigies of Argentina – the gaucho, the Tango, its special wines etc. –, one must undoubtedly include thePeron couple, Juan Domingo Peron and Evita Duarte Peron. The Argentine leaders have launched “Peronism”, aneconomic doctrine with important social reverberations. The present study observes the genesis of this doctrine, itsproliferation and its coordinates. It also surveys the way Argentina developed during Peronism, and aims at evaluating ifthe doctrine is still valid.

Old Romanian books in the public libraries in Hungary

In this study, the author gives evidence of the presence in the libraries in Hungary of two printed works, representingunknown and yet important Romanian bibliographic sources: Old Book(Bucvariu, Viena, 1792) and The parochial duties of thepresbyters(Datorinţele presbiterilor parohalnici, Buda, 1798). The author realizes a tehnical description of the printed works, according with the specialized scientific terminology, aiming thus at introducing these two so far unknown sources in thescientific circuit. Keywords: public libraries in Hungary, old Romanian book, orthodox religious book, notes, spelling-book

The paradox as passion of the contemplative reason in Søren Kierkegaard’s philosophy

The meeting between the reason and the paradox represents an event of special order for the human consciousness. The cognitive analytical flow is put in front of an obstacle that not only stops it, but also stimulates it. By analyzing theratio between the paradoxical situation and the reason, in correspondence with the ratio between passion and affectivity,Søren Kierkegaard insists on the ability to potentiate and to incite that the paradox can exert on the meditative thinking. The paradox, as passion of the contemplative reason, represents the unknown that induces the need of self-surpassing themeditative procedure, the need to jump over its own self-imposed limits. The meeting with the paradox resembles to thesetting of the consciousness in front of the mystery of the Divine, placing that troubles, by its ontological and gnoseologicaldisproportion, by perceiving the difference and the distance between God and the man, distance inaugurated, accordingto the mystical and theological version, by the original sin. For Kierkegaard, a contemplator who does not experiment theanxious meeting with the paradox is just like a lover who does not totally assume his love or like a false believer who invokeshis god without actually living his sacrament. Such a contemplator is and remains a mediocre spirit.

Geography of the Family Name Sass/Saß and of its Correspondents in Germany and Romania

The purpose of the present paper is to demonstrate, based on a special digital program containing the lists of telephoniccustomers from 2005 in Germany, that the family names and ethnonyms Sass/Saß in German, the Romanian Sas, Sas(s)u,Sascu, the Hungarian S(z)asz, whose origin is first of all the name of the old tribe of Northern Saxons (Nieder)sachsen(oldGerman sahso, middle German sachse, northern German sasse), based on this, the German colonists who came in Transylvaniain the 12thcentury were called in Latin Saxones, in German Siebenbürger Sachsen, in Romanian saşi, their geographic spreadingin Germany is different due to the fact that, in the case of names such as Sass/Saß, we can speak about indigenous names, formed on the territory of Germany, especially in northern lands Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Schleswig-Holstein (seeMap 1), while in the second case, we are dealing with names having a foreign origin (Romanian or Hungarian) that appearedin Transylvania and then reached Germany due to the phenomenon of migration from east to west, specific to the 20thand the 21stcenturies for political-economic reasons (spreading in the richly industrialized lands of Bavaria,Baden-Württemberg, Rheinland-Pfalz, Hessen and Nordrhein-Westfalen (see Map 2).

Eminescu’s erotic psychology. Lovinescu’s misconstructions

The present paper illustrates several significant moments from the history of Eminescu’s critical interpretation. It focuses mainly on the first stages when the Romantic writer’s myth crystallized, namely E Lovinescu’s “reading” of the poet’s eroticism through the lens of Freud’s theories. We endeavored to prove that Lovinescu’s interpretation was just one among others (Ibrăileanu, Călinescu, Vianu, Caracostea), as the whole context favored a psychological understanding of Eminescu’s personality. In order to sketch a still more convincing picture we brought into discussion the most recent studies dealing with different aspects of Eminescu’s life and work and our conclusion shows clearly that, notwithstanding its limits, Lovinescu’s understanding was a revolutionary and crucial one for the later developments.

Caragiale and the complexes of Romanian identity between stylistics and rhetorics

In this study we analyzed how cliché becomes a carrier of identity marks and also configures, generates a series of stylistic trademarks within the works of Romanian playwriter I.L.Caragiale. Moreover, we tried to show how cliché as “attempt to reproduce a particular model set” in termes of Anne Herschberg Pierrot is responsible for placing his work in modernity, in contemporariness. On the other hand, we have carefully investigated the  relationship between style and rhetoric in the speech which conveys a cliché as an element of a distorted rhetoric subsequently converted in a particular style. This popularity and the reccurence of these stylistic trademarks we explained by registering it as a fact of identity thus rendering a stylistics of identity loaded with ontological value.

Master Tudor – Failed History

The present study attempts to offer an in-depth analysis of Carol Ardeleanu’s work Domnul Tudor (Master Tudor), a novel about the revolution of 1821 written in the interwar period of time. Mention should be made about Carol Ardeleanu’s historical style, but also about the strengths, weaknesses and deficiencies of the novel. I shall also undertake through the present study to present the main character of the novel. Romanian hero Tudor Vladimirescu is described through a narration about his childhood, and his moments of glory and decay, as perceived by the author after analysing several historical documents upon the subject. The study also deals with the description of Tudor’s life as famous leader of the pandours’ group who fought, in 1821, for dignity, freedom, and a better life.

Children’s poetry and Propaganda in the Communist textbooks

The article sustains that the politicization of culture and literature during the Romanian communist era is reflected on the content of the literature published in the textbooks. Children’s poetry, turned into a propaganda tool, is designed to achieve ideological goals. Despite the frequent changes that will take place in the educational system during the more than forty years of communist rule in Romania, one element remains constant, the perfect control of every written piece, the presence of ideology to saturation.  The purpose of the communist regime is to change reality according to its ideological claims. All children’s poetry subordinated to the propaganda machine has the function to embellish the reality and to educate young minds in the communist spirit.

Gheorghe Crăciun: from the syntax of reality to the ontological solitude

The author analyzes the six keywords which define the evolution of Gheorghe Crăciun’s (one of the most important contemporary Romanian prose writers) work and thought: syntax, photography, rewriting (resemantization), body, author, loneliness. In his poems from the beginning of the 70s and in the volume “Original documents, legalized copies”, Crăciun puts
forward a new narrative and poetic syntax, permitting a more effective exploration and expression of the world in the Gutenberg Galaxy, subsequent to the generalization of scripturality. A radical poetics, excluding the use of metaphor, metonimy, symbol, of pre-existent cultural codes, through the limitation to one, also new, “morphological” support: photographic image. The next step – the resemantization of discourse – is taken with the rewriting (resemantization) of certain more or less known literary works (among which Longos’s “Daphnis and Chloe” or a poem-fairy tale by Eminescu), with the bringing forth of the body and of a new type of author (according with Rimbaud’s concept: “Je est un autre”), in “Composition with unequal parallel bars” and “The beauty with no body”. In the core of his opus magnum, “Pupa Russa”, there lies loneliness, subsuming all other keywords. The heroine of the novel, Leontina, is an icon of the postmodern woman: a phantasm, a toy for the adults, a beautiful carcass containing other carcasses, caught in the loneliness of her body, refusing herself maternity. The conclusion of Crăciun’s scriptural adventure is: the only thing connecting people today is the syntax of their loneliness.

Lucian Raicu: in the core of literature (I)

The present study observes Lucian Raicu’s literary criticism, with a twofold goal: first of all, it has the ambition of establishing a literary canon, while it aims at proving that Raicu was, besides Nicolae Manolescu and Eugen Simion, one of the three great literary critics of the postwar period; then, the second (and just as important) objective is that of identifying the arcane method of an apparently impressionistic critic, its primum movens and modus operandi. After carefully surveying Raicu’s main works, from his youth to the last ones, the author reaches the conclusion that the critic’s „impressionism” has a solid existential foundation, being the expression of a transversal section within the human, getting beyond the purely artistic dimension of the works and opening literature towards what is more-than-literature.

Imaginary libraries. Two reflections on literature as a system

This paper discusses the question of literature represented as a system made of institutions such as writers, critics, literary generations, canonical battles and so on, functioning as a self-regulating mechanism. To put this question into perspective, two literary works are used which both have a metaliterary dimension and both borrow (for fiction) the form of a “serious” scholarly work: the bibliography and the monograph. In Mircea Horia Simionescu’s “General Bibliography”, the seemingly anarchistic representation of an infinite productivity of literature meets its boundaries when confronted with the actual writers making up the Romanian (Cantemir, Caragiale, Odobescu, Urmuz and especially G. Călinescu) or the European literary canon (Goethe, Ariosto, Dostoievski). Simionescu describes therefore not the apocalyptic disappearance of values and criteria for judging literature, but a necessary regeneration of stale old literary formulas by means of an ingenious and highly competent readership. In the Chilean Roberto Bolaño’s “Nazi Literature in the Americas”, the idea of a “Nazi literature” serves as a metaphor for literature itself as a form of spiritual investigation of the darker inner regions of the human being. Bolaño’s representation of literature is also that of a “closed” literary system, not because of its alleged secrecy or “danger”, but because it defines itself as an activity of thought, resorting to similar patterns in its search for originality.

A poem of Heidegger
Foreword to Todtnauberg by Paul Celan

The encounter of Martin Heidegger with Paul Celan in philosopher’ chalet in Todtnauberg is subject to many interpretations and polemics, starting with the lines written by poet in the chalet’ guestbook, rephrased then in a poem also called Todtnauberg, which express the hope for “a word to come” regarding the thinker’s early political engagement. Less known is Heidegger’s answer… in the form of a poem.

Julian Barnes and the Sense of  History

The present article focuses on three novels which are highly relevant for understanding Julian Barnes’ view on history and historical knowledge. Flaubert’s Parrot, A History of the World in 10½ Chapters and The Sense of an Ending offer illustrative evidence of the writer’s approach to the construction of history which, though highly marked by postmodernism, departs from it in the keenness and passion with which it questions the world and the emphasis it places on ethical issues.
