Panta Rhei: With Mo Yan, About Change in China

This study puts forward a general discussion regarding the cultural climate in China, using as a starting point the autobiography of probably the foremost contemporary Chinese writer, namely Mo Yan, the recipient of the Nobel prize in 2012. His individual destiny is intertwined with China’s destiny in the second half of the past century, the dominant sign of both the individual and collective destinies being the alert change – both on a personal and on a socio-cultural level. However, despite this attempt of geminating his own private destiny with the public destiny of China, careful reading identifies things left unsaid by the author, a sort of strange „cultural amnesia” which he desperately tries to supply or supplement through irony.

Octavio Paz: Poetry, Tradition, Modernity. Points of Convergence

Considered one of the most important contemporary writers and thinkers of Latin America, Octavio Paz changed for ever the face of Mexican literature. Preoccupied of the relationship between poetry and the modern age, this author dedicated essential essays to this specific problem, but he did not forget nevertheless to evaluate the changes experienced by modern literature from the Romantic epoch to the present-day age. His essays, from The Labyrinth of Solitude to The Bow and the Lyre or The Signs in Rotation prove his decision to define the essence of modern art and altogether that of the meaning of the so called „literary tradition”. Based upon the lectures he gave in the USA in the 70s, his cycle of essays dedicated explicitly to the modern poetry analyzes the evolution of European literature from the Romanticism to the Avant-Garde, establishing the points of convergence between the poetic domain, the religious one and their relationship with the society, in order to finally explain the essence of the poem and to underline the role of each reading act.

Finding Bessarabian Literature on the Maps of Eastern Europe. Notes on a Case of Triangular Cultural Transfer

This paper makes a case for studying the processes of intercultural transfer between Romania, the Republic of Moldova, and, adjacently, the USSR/ The Russian Federation, focusing mainly on the postcommunist period. Using the methodology elaborated by Michel Espagne (Espagne 1987; 2013), I suggest a more open reading of Romanianlanguage
Bessarabian literature, in the wider frame of cultural transfers. Considering the geopolitics of the region and the ideological and cultural influence of the USSR in the second half of the 20th century, my paper offers a model of triangular cultural transfer between Bessarabia/ The Republic of Moldova, Romania and Russia.

Consumerism and Propaganda in Romanian Historical Novel under Communism (II)

This paper is a reflection on the ambiguous status and boundaries of popular historical fiction under communism: on the one hand, it strengthened the glorious image of the national past elaborated by the communist propaganda; on the other hand, it opened an escapist dimension that contributed to the subversion of the “gray” realism the regime approved of as a narrative formula. Its literary success seems to be the result of some kind of escapism from the immediate reality by reconstructing the past (described in all the official histories as an exclusively glorious one) into exciting narrations that combine documented historical reality with fictional hypotheses and spectacular plots.

The Writing in Commun: Ionel Teodoreanu and Ștefana Velisar Teodoreanu

This paper explores the correspondences between the writing of Ionel Teodoreanu and Ștefana Velisar Teodoreanu. Evaluating the concept of community of lovers developed first by Georges Bataille and afterwards by Maurice Blanchot and that of literary communism theorized by Jean-Luc Nancy, the bet of this article is to search gestures, images,
dedications beyond the text itself in order to define a secret code of the lovers that are, at the same time, writers. The community of lovers is not a romantic Eden, but an obscure cell, always on the edge of disintegration, meaning that the writing itself becomes impossibility, especially in the feminine formula.
Keywords: the community of lovers, the inoperable community, literary communism, image, secrecy.

The Dialogue of Cultural-Literary Centres in the Interwar Romanian Novel

The present article departs from the axiom that we are all made different from our originating culture, but also made similar by the universal values identified by the structuralists within the corpus of each culture. Thus, the manner in which there are administrated the differences between cultures interfering geographically represent a decisive factor for the identity of a culture. In what regards the Romanian cultural identity, it displays an adaptative behavior, inside which
the imitations is never so servile as to annihilate the national specifics, but it is nevertheless prepared to produce „mutant replicas” within a new organism while both transforming and searching itself.

Globalization of public policy models and investment forms.
The case of the Education of Information in France and Romania

Information literacy is a major policy concern in the digital age and an emerging scientific issue. It is at the heart of the concerns of educators and one of the main activities within school libraries, documentation and information centres
(CDI) and Learning Centres. We propose an analysis that questions the dynamic range by international organizations (OECD, UNESCO, Europe). Therefore, we have made a comparative study between France and Romania emphasizing the transformations
of the relationships between documentary policies and training of users in the info-documentary structures. The transfer of «users’ approaches», of trainings by skills and cultural paradigms are the elements that have focused our attention in the analysis of a survey conducted in Romanian schools, to capture the process of unification of
educations on information literacy in educational systems.

What influence man has had on the climate? We think mainly of major technological options, the stages of its history, the “Seals” negative global environmental crisis (not just CO2 emissions). Only “modernity” can be accused of harming the environment today, tomorrow? The process is more complicated, involving for centuries the economic and social, politics, biology, geography, demography and others. Such issues dealing “Anthropocene” and “Anthropocene”. Countryside and Communism in Eastern Europe: Perceptions, Attitudes, Propaganda
– Problems, Interpretations and Perspectives

Generally, studies on communism in Eastern Europe have focused mainly on various political history topics – the establishment of the new totalitarian regimes, the elimination of democratic order, the repression, the anticommunist resistance – while disregarding the many aspects of social and cultural history in general and, in particular, the
transformations in the rural world. Among the latter, the collectivization of agriculture holds a central position. The need for historiographical betterment in this sphere of knowledge is all the more urgent as many impressive theoretical and methodological surveys have been published in recent years, dedicated to social and cultural history, and, at the
same time, the opening of important archive collections related to the early history of communism in the states of the former “cordon sanitaire” provides the documentary material required for applied research. This study plans to be an
analysis of the main research directions of the countryside from the East European countries during the communist regime, presented in historiography and classified as following: Agrarian Reforms After WWII and Their Impact on the Rural World; Collectivization and Communization in the Rural World; The Stalinist Repression and the Resistance
Against Communism in the Countryside; The Rural World and Local Elites in Communism. Also, the study focuses on some insufficiently researched themes or unapproached which can explain properly the impact of communism above the countryside and especially how the totalitarian regime had influenced the vilage and the people of the “Socialist Bloc”.

R.W. Seton-Watson and the Hungarian Pragmatic Revisionism (1933-1940)

The perspective of the completion of the Hungarian revisionist plans entered a new more favorable phase in the beginning of the year 1933, when in Germany the Nazi party took over the power. As the Nazis had consolidated their power in Germany and switched over to violating international treaties, Hungary increasingly geared towards Hitler, whom it perceived as its main support for its revisionist goals. The close collaboration with Nazi Germany constituted a permanent mark in the Hungarian foreign policy starting with the year 1933 and until the end of World War II.
However, the orientation towards Nazi Germany did not mean that Hungary abandoned its revisionist action, which was taken over after 1920 in Western states and especially in England, but on the contrary, it experienced a revival in 1933.
The publicist and historian R. W. Seton-Watson had an important role in the advancement of countermeasures by the Romanian State against the actions led by the Hungarian State in England towards the revision of the Treaty of Trianon.
Remaining the same constant and valuable friend of the Romanians, Seton-Watson acted as a determined and active adversary through a wide range of events, scientific papers, essays, lectures, radio shows and reports addressed to the English political circles against the revisionism promoted by Horthy’s Hungary. Seton condemned the dismantling of Transylvania by the second Vienna Dictate of August 30th 1940, also after Romania had entered World War II on the side of Nazi Germany.

Georges Duby and the rural economy in Western Middle Ages

The contrast between advanced urban economy of the Islam and the backward rural Western European economy during Early Middle Ages is sharp. Whereas Islam covers the large part of the known world, bridging up Western Africa, the Mediterranean Sea, the Middle East and the Indian Ocean, the Western economy retrenches inside ancient city walls and in rural, remote areas. While Muslim cities prosper due to large scale trade, the Western towns and villages thrive to survive the shrinking economy, heading towards autarchy. One of the most important actors of the economic take-off of the late Middle Ages in Western Europe are to be found among various abbeys, which manage to reconnect the former trade roads and to supply with coins the pale rural economy.

Implications for language acquisition theories: a fresh look at the “genie case”

Language is one of the classic examples of the sensitive periodicity of the brain. What it is known so far is that language has a critical period for learning. Babies and children are geniuses until they turn seven, and then there’s a systematic decline in their ability to acquire languages. One of the most fascinating examples in this regards is the case of
Genie, a young girl who for the first 13 years of her life underwent a degree of social isolation and experiential deprivation not previously reported in contemporary scientific history. A lot of laboratory work was done on this case, and linguists and scientists tries to address head-on hypothesis about language and human mind, however, new studies (2011-2015)
indicate that early speech learning is not only limited by the critical period of the first years of life, but it is also severely limited in the absence of social interaction. Moreover, by the age of 5, prior to formal schooling, studies like Patricia Kuhl’s (2011) show that brain activation in the brain areas related to language and literacy are strongly correlated with the social environment of the child’s family. Therefore, scientifically speaking, more than anything Genie’s case proved that complete lack of social interaction has a devastating impact on human language learning, to the extent that normal language skills are never acquired.

Aspects regarding the methods used in teaching Romanian as a foreign language,
or „the most easygoing extract of the teaching system of Romanian language”

The present article is a survey of the most effective methods of teaching Romanian as a foreign language. The author departs from the suprising evidence that there exists no effective course of „Romanian in Two Weeks”, or something similar – and then tries to find out both the reasons of this absence and the methods to supplement this flaw. Based on the author’s rich experience in teaching Romanian to foreign students, the article offers a systematization of the difficulties one encounters during this tough endeavour.

A Stylistic Incursion on the Realm of Syntax

Languages have their well-designed structural patterns that function in perfect connection and ensure meaningful, thorough proportions within a dialectic perspective on innovation, intercorrelation and deeper structures. A sound structure is, nevertheless, the basis that hosts and gives birth to the later fascination of literary realms. The study suggested
below aims to get the world of rigid word-structured patterns as close as possible to the sensitive field of Stylistics within a frame that will hopefully do justice to both sides.

Light Comes from the East. About the Proper Use of Grammar

The paper adresses the post-Stalinist development of linguistics in East-European countries, particularly focusing on the Romanian case. More specifically, it deals with the advance of Structuralism as a side effect of certain education policies of the regime. The primary scope of the study covers the interval of the 50s, aiming to describe the theoretical and institutional path of linguistics, determined by its strategic role within the formation of the ”new man”; but its conclusions extend towards the following two-three decades, as the paradigm established in the 50s would remain stable and convenient for linguistics studies in a Socialist environment.
