Anglicisms in Romanian – a barrier to effective communication?

Communication, a two-way process where the roles of both the sender and the receiver of the message are equally important, may be hindered by certain factors which act as barriers to its effectiveness. Language with its variations or dialects is among the barriers which must be overcome so that people should be able to understand the exact meaning of the message and the risk of misunderstanding, due to misinterpretation of information, be removed.

The use of jargon which has lately abounded in anglicisms and xenisms is a linguistic barrier to some beneficiaries of different services in Romania, irrespective of the field of activity.

This is the issue the present paper approaches, with direct reference to business where the overuse of anglicisms and xenisms may act as ”noises” that distort the message and render communication inefficient.

Key words: barrier, communication, jargon, anglicisms, xenisms

This study aims to present the pattern of economic growth in Western Europe and then in the European Union after 1950, but before. What were the motors as shown and the relationship of investment – profitability, the economic – social ? Emphasis has been put on the examples of Germany and France: what is the nearest genre and what were and are the specific differences? What conclusions can be drawn? What role has the International Monetary Fund? Here are the issues and questions that we have come to answer.

The Reception of Virgil Mazilescu´s Work: The Obsessions Of Literary Criticism

Virgil Mazilescu still remains one of the most intriguing Romanian poets. The complexity and the diversity of his poetical work is a challenge for any exegetical analysis; in fact, in many cases, the Romanian critics had suggested the impossibility of fitting Mazilescu’s poetry into the patterns of a certain aesthetic. In this paper, we aim to approach two obsessions of the Romanian critical analysis: on the one hand, the validity of Mazilescu’s poetry belonging to the surrealistic aesthetics, on the other hand, the oral character of his poems, in order to identify a new way of understanding its internal mechanisms. The critical support of this paper consists of chronicles and volumes that discuss Virgil Mazilescu’s literary work.

Interdisciplinarity – a chance of transfer of the identity construction in Petru Popescu and Jeffrey Eugenides’s novels

Interdisciplinarity, or the study of the interaction beween the diverse areas of academic investigation, became an area of study in itself, its conclusions and methods being constantly analysed and evaluated. This phenomenon has become one of the most significant in today’s society. Literature does not mean solely words on a page, but also its reception and the manner in which it is perceived. The social aspect and, implicitly, the interdisciplinarity between literature and sociology are visible in both authors’ works. In Petru Popescu’s case one can notice a social commitment from a political perspective, a commitment towards freedom of thought and expression. Jeffrey Eugenides’s literature has a social meaning concerning the individual’s freedom of choosing a destiny. He pleads for the acceptance of social segments that some still name „subcategories” or „niche”, whether one refers to sexual orientation or so-called intelectual, ethnical or cultural „outsiders”.

Roberto Bolaño – „2666” and the theory of minority

This study examines Roberto Bolaño’s strategies of redeploying marginality in literary discourse, with particular focus on his novel entitled 2666. Bolaño borrows the aesthetics of the peripheral, the poetics of the insignificant, or the themes of vagrancy and Bohemian rootlessness from various famous authors, but, at the same time, these elements are delivered in an unrivaled personal style that problematizes aspects pertaining to literary theory and the theory of the novel. An anarchetypal novel (with an atomized structure, much like the dispersed pieces of a puzzle), 2666 breaks many authorial and stylistic patterns and disregards the conventional rules of narrative architecture, becoming a significant milestone in today’s novelistic world.

Fictionalization of the self reflected in “Other Colors” – Orhan Pamuk

The autobiographical genre allows the recounting of past experiences through a series of expressive “lens”,in other words, through the means of fiction. The aim of this article is to decode in “Other Colours” (1999), a volume of essays written by one of the most appreciated contemporary authors, Orhan Pamuk, the narrative identity that emerges by a fictionalization of the self. The autobiographical essay highlights certain significant views of the author, without displaying them entirely. The authenticity of the commented events isn’t as important as the meaning revealed through the process of debating and speculating that organizes the discourse. A questioning of the self related to a type of personal history, inevitably linked to the greater history, is placed in a narrative frame that successfully manages to transform a personal reflection in a universal matter.

The strategy of (auto)irony through the writings of Fouad Laroui

The literature of Fouad Laroui is surprisingly lucid and sympathetic with a worldwide audience. Using irony as an instrument of rhetoric, the Moroccan writer provides not only a contemporary topic, but also new perspectives on the same subjects: society, culture, love, (trans)national barriers etc. This article tries to present the originality of the mechanism of irony in the literature of Laroui, according to Vladmir Jankélévitch’s theory.

Mutations of Eminescu’s Cosmogony in a Genetic Literature of `Satyre I`’s Versions. Hindu Philosophy and Vedda Influences in Mihai Eminescu’s Visionarism

By means of applying a process of genetic criticism, the following paper aims to analyse the cosmogonical transformations that supervene in the workshop of M. Eminescu’s Satyre I, from the first drafts of the poem to its final form. At the same time, the study intends to use this process in order to demonstrate the existence of Hindu spiritual influence and Vedic philosophy in Eminescu’s poetic visionarism that stems from a German philosophical interference via cultural ricoché through the well-known affinity of the Romanian romantic poet for Arthur Schopenhauer’s philosophy. The study will attempt to scrutinize the influence of Vedic philosophy absorbed through the study of Schopenhauer’s works by analysing elements of semantic, syntactic and symbolic examination of Satyre I’s avant-text that shift throughout the elaboration of the poem.

„Generation Post-2000”. A Promotion

The purpose of this paper is to shed light on the ways in which contemporary Romanian poetry has underwent a change in the last decade, signaling not only a mutation in the literary field, but also a shift in social values. The main characteristics of ‚Generation 2000’ are being put into question by the emergence of a new promotion of poets. Within this paper, the two different poetic sensibilities are mirrored to show the mechanism of evolution within the Romanian literary canon and to exactly pinpoint its motives.

Keywords: contemporary Romanian literature, ‘Generation 2000’, ‘Generation Post-2000’, posthumanism, technology, New Sincerity

Emilian Galaicu-Păun – Poetic Intertextuality between Natural and Bookish

The Moldavian/Bessarabian “generation 80” emerged under different historical and political conditions as compared with the Romanian one; nevertheless, it shares some characteristics similar to the Romanian model in what regards the sociolinguistic, imagological, rhetorical aspects. It did not appear as a declared opposition to a particular generation, but was born out of a normal reaction to recovery after a prolonged cultural convalescence and, of course, to synchronization by transfer with new experiences and experiments from Romanian and Western culture and literature. This “intersection” between the two axes of the generations 80 (the Romanian and the Moldavian ones) is illustrated by the intertextual poetry of Emilian Galaicu-Păun, displaying an interesting disclosure of the intertextualization process, the creation of the poem as a scriptural agent, by drawing the relative effects of the distances between the performer and performance.

The Aesthetics of Absence in Iustin Panța´s Poetry

The present study argues that the universe in Iustin Panța’s poetry is compounded of objects which many times simulate the human behavior. The simple things are actually deployed for reminding the subject of the loved human being who is lost to him and have an empty form without content. The technique was developed by Mallarmé and it consists of voiding the objects of their signifier. The same method is used by Iustin Panța; the difference is that while Mallarmé employs it for musical pusposes, the Romanian poet uses it to evade into the past, where the memories represent a safehold. Therefore, the absence inserts itself in the discourse, becoming this way a poetic technique which gathers around it the elements of the poetic universe.

Keywords: contemporary Romanian, poetry, absence, Iustin Panța, signifier, signified.

Vasile Lovinescu. The hermeneutics of Creangă’s folk tales

In an exercice of myth analysis, starting from the Guénonian premise of the non-human origin of the folklore, Vasile Lovinescu stops at the tales written by Ion Creangă, considered a genius story-teller, a witness of the Tradition. The myth analysis in Creangă’s tales, the esoteric interpretation of the fundamental ballads of the Romanian spirituality, the remarkable analysis of the carols, all are integrated in defining a national mythology, in a hermeneutics with a great intelectual force. ‘Creangă și Creanga de aur’ and ‘Interpretarea ezoterică a unor basme și balade populare românești’ are the two fundamental works of analysis of the Romanian folk tradition. Vasile Lovinescu opens up two polemic lines inside his studies dedicated to the Romanian folk tales and ballads: one, with the official, academic school of folk study, and the other, much more poignant, with the direction of the modern national history, in rem, rather than in personam.

Ioan Petru Culianu’s Conception on Literature

The present study is focused on excavating (from interviews, fictional literature,  diary pages etc.) a coherent conception of Ioan Petru Culianu’s on literature. The historian of religions understood literature as myth (a secular and non-ritual  myth, nevertheless a proper one) – therefore, literature is for him not simply a passtime, but the crux and culmination  of his scientific studies. His literary method thus also serves as camouflage of his scientific method, always working in codependence  with it.

Eso es México…!

The following article is a review regarding the exhibition Eso es México, hosted by the “Franz Binder” Museum of National Ethnography of Sibiu (division of the ASTRA National Museum Complex) between 27 July – 15 September 2017. The exhibition was curated by three artists from Mexico City, namely Cesar Oropeza, Augusto Quevedo Lara and Isaac Reyes Bravo, under the coordination of Ioana Kirculescu von Kimakowicz; it represents a collection of alebrijes, i.e. multicolured paper sculptures quite traditional in Mexico, the most ambitious of them depicting Quetzalcoatl. The article describes and illustrates the meaning and the tradition of these alebrijes in Mexico.
