“Legenda Aurea.” An Exercise of Historical Catechesis

The present study analyzes the medieval text Legenda Aurea belonging to Jacoppo of Varazza or Varagine, a Dominican monk born in 1228 or 1230 who dies as archbishop of Genoa on July 14th, 1298. His foremost work, Legenda Aurea, also known as Legenda sanctorum or Historia Lombardica, is a compilation of the lives of the saints written with a view quite similar to that of a modern columnist, which makes of Jacoppo of Voragine one of the main illustrators of the historical catechesis. The study focuses on the presentation Jacoppo of Voragine makes to the figures of some essential saints – such as Saint Andrew, Saint Nicholas, Saint Stephen, Saint John the Evangelist.

Leonid Dimov – Legislator and Director of the Dream

This study aims to examine, through a close reading approach, the theoretical texts of the poet Leonid Dimov, who seconded the writer Dumitru Ţepeneag, the main theorist of the Oneiric Movement in Romania during the second half of the 20th century. In his theoretical texts, Leonid Dimov wanted to explain, in leitmotif manner, why Aesthetic Oneirism was a direction with a purpose and why dreams represented, according to the new literary formula proposed by Oneirism, a structure that was moulded lucidly, rationally, after oneiric patterns. Dimov’s theoretical forays, in which he considered himself to be a legislator and a director of dreams, also explain, in fact, the underlying mechanisms of his poetry and his creed.

The Revolutionary Typology – A Perspective: Marin Preda and Petru Dumitriu

Through his novel, What is to be done? (1863), Nikolai Cernâşevski circulated a illustrative character for a new typology that of professional revolutionaries. The model has become popular because Lenin attached great importance to it and writers have left influenced by this model. The revolutionary typology enters the Romanian literature, but it acquires a special importance only after the communist regime came into power. A number of important writers use this typology, both in the context of peasant society and that of the bourgeois. Marin Preda and Petru Dumitriu are representative in this respect, and their novels, The Moromets (1955) and Family Chronicle (1957) offer two case studies. I watched through these case studies how a farmer’s son and the son of an important lawyer from Bucharest became activists and what makes the difference between them and the Rahmetov-type.

Presentism and Miserabilism in the Prose of the 2000 Generation

The main characteristic of the regime of historicity (a term coined by the French historian François Hartog) during 1990-2000 is the focus on the present, on presentism (again a term coined by François Hartog), with its various forms of recovery of the past, and less on the future. Thus, presentism is the expression of an arrested transition (from communism to democracy and capitalism), of a crisis, of a post-revolutionary disillusion and disappointment. A social, economic and political crisis that young people experienced more acutely – this fact is reflected in the prose of the 2000 generation (those writers who made their debut at the beginning of the 2000s).

The Kronstadt Literature Circle during his four decades

Purpose of this paper is to report on the different “life stages” during the four decades of the Kronstadt literature circle. For this purpose, first the cultural and political backgrounds must be explained. It is known that in the period 1950-1989 there have been literature circles and groupings in Transylvania (Brasov/Kronstadt, Codlea/Zeiden, Sibiu/Hermannstadt, Cluj/Klausenburg, Sighisoara/Schäßburg, Medias/Mediasch) Banat (Timisoara/Temeswar, Arad) and Bucharest. The functionality has changed in the course of 40 years in the “thaw period” and “ice ages”, especially since they were subjected to several cultural and political discourses.

The Absurd Dimension of Existence, between Originality and Mannerism

Parables whose symbolism is joggling between transparency and hermetism, the proses Lunga călătorie a prizonierului (The Prisoner’s Long Journey) and Noaptea inocenţilor (The Night of the Innocents) made possible comparing Sorin Titel to literary models such as Kafka, Beckett, Robbe-Grillet. These writings are encompassed within the aesthetical category of the absurd through the means of the reference system, the imaginary used (atmosphere, characters whose lameness hint towards identical existences and whose language not only undermines the meaning of communication but also downgrades to the level of unarticulated sounds, a reflex of regression) and the style (similarity to the works of the New French Novel). Regardless the sensation of composition in the shadow of models difficult to imitate without being accused of pastiche, Sorin Titel makes use – in a narrow epic space – of a narrative registry that tends to shape profound aspects of existence. The article deals with the intermingling with the associative models, the limit of imitation and the features that individualize the above mentioned proses – features that impose and support the originality of the parables: concrete and symbolical acuity (vibration in response to the physical pain and emotional trauma); credibility of the monochord atmosphere as echo and metaphor of the inner world; the game between explicit and ciphered details; the science of measuring suspense.

Metaphysicians, newspapers, devils and …wine at E. A. Poe (I)

E. A. Poe had a different view on philosophers and philosophy, leading critics of his work to conclude that he had a rather negative opinion of this spiritual realm and of those studying it. However, on closer look, one can notice a few nuances, such as the difference between metaphysicians and philosophers, the former making up a category within the wider borders of philosophy. Nevertheless, in his writings, Poe would often refer to profound philosophical ideas, sometimes mystical, whereas, in some cases, he would also descend from the higher spheres and highlight more worldly domains, of practical philosophy, such as… gastronomy or oenology, or even the pleasure of consuming wine during heated debates.

The issue of Bessarabia in the Romanian press at the end of the 19th century

The 19th century, and especially its second decade, represents an essential stage in the historical process of the modern Romanian State foundation. The years 1859 and 1877 are distinguished as reference years in the history of our people. The former is the year of the First Union of the Principalities, while the latter is the year when the Romanian state gains its independence on the battlefield. In an era in which national autonomy becomes a stringent issue for most European states, Romanian press focuses mainly on the attempts of the Romanian political class towards territorial unification and the gaining of independence. Following the Berlin Peace Conference our country is imposed, as a price for its independence, to give up three counties of Southern Bessarabia (Cahul, Ismail, Bolgrad) to Russia, a situation that was thoroughly debated in the newspapers of the time. This study aims at analysing the importance given to the Bessarabia issue by the Romanian press at the end of the 19th century and the way this issue is treated by four publications, considered representative for the Romanian journalistic discourse of that time: „Românul”, „Timpul”, „Voința Națională” and „Epoca”.

Geographies of the Miracle: the Desert and the City

The present article presents and discusses some expresive and functional simmilarities between gestures, characters and symbolizing structures proper to two apparenly different cultural worlds: the desert of the beginnings of Christianity and the metropolitan world of the nineteenth century. Some characters play, in these both worlds, a critical role the allows us to see them in a significative relation. These relations (both ontological and epistemological) between the wandering monk and the flaneur (the two characters in focus) challenge the classical theories of secularization and also the very sober physiognomies of modernity.

Experimentation and amelioration in the works of John Evelyn

In this paper I will argue that we can trace an undulating line between the Hartlib Circle and the Royal Society based on the interest for husbandry, experimentation, and amelioration. If in the years preceding the 1660s husbandry focused more on technological projects of amelioration of the fallen nature (soil, plants, human beings as well), starting with the beginning of the Royal Society, the accent moved from spiritual salvation to experimental purposes. This shift of attention is present in John Evelyn’s approach of the topic. In the late 1650s, Evelyn’s vision on husbandry entailed the moral dimension of religious salvation, while in the 1660s, he minimized his interest for religious purposes and turned his attention to experiments and “scientific” aspiration.

The Body in Ancient Mesopotamia

Mesopotamian art is still undergoing an intense deconstruction process. Within the syntax of this language, the body has a special meaning due to its contextual polysemy. Experts are trying to penetrate the semantic labyrinth of Sumerian texts with the aid of such concepts as the body of god, the body of the king, the body of the city, in which the heart-mind-body holism plays a decisive part. Upon careful analysis, the male nude covers an impressive array of attributes, from the divine or heroic to the pre-civilizational. Additionally, the holistic and creative overtones which the term entails in its various linguistic derivations manage to perfect the all-encompassing meaning of bodily identity, completing its entirety and integrity.

Keywords: Uruk/Warka vase, sumerian terms, gendered body, body-mind, anatomic gender, socio-cultural gender, heroic nude.

A Historical Meta-Model of Romanian Language and Literature Students’ Book from 1948 to 1989

The role of educational instrument that the Romanian Language and Literature textbook used to hold during the communist regime is incontestable. To subject these textbooks to an inventory is not an easy but rather a necessary endeavor especially because of their deconstructionist exploratory potential. Cosmina Cristescu opts for an approach to a rich material that perpetuated, at an educational level, structures of the imaginary and of rhetoric pertaining to communist ideology, from the vantage point of ideological disenchantment. Her undertaking is one that involves the investigation of normative models for the study of Romanian literature encountered in the only available textbooks during the communist period. Here literature functioned as a metadiscourse, as an ideology transfer institution and the research of this environment becomes an opportunity to ponder, from a pedagogical perspective, upon the culturalpolitical habitus of the period between 1948 and 1989.

Keywords: instruments of knowledge, textbooks, communist propaganda, the literature-ideology rapport, children’s poetry during the communist regime.

Eugenics and Ethnic Ontology

Historical phenomena related to eugenics, race, building an ideal state based on a racial monotone were sources of research, especially in recent decades, and in Romania for a very short time. Marius Turda book’s presents with scientific accuracy, a view of European eugenics, in which Romania has also an important role. The use of the various documents, a part of them unpublished, proves useful for building a unified impressions about the eugenics theories and associations from 1870 to1950. The book analyzes the transfer of scientific instruments in the definition of cultural landmarks and the creation of an ethnic ontology. The completeness depends on the comparative method applied, which give birth to a dense text with information designed to exhaust and clarify this scientific approach.

On „Octavian Goga or Nostalgia of Completion by «US»”, in other terms

Octavian Goga is one of the most representative Romanian poets. One of his impressive features resides in the ability to combine words from a literary register with words from a regional, a popular or an archaic one. Dictionary of Octavian Goga’s Poetic Language was written by Gheorge Moldoveanu, a Romanian eminent professor. It comes under a quite deficient range of dictionaries of Romanian writers’ language. The endeavour has a clear artistic and sociological purpose. The repertory of words used by a poet, located in contexts of different lengths, actually means a different reading of his creation. The regent is the sociocultural analysis. Nevertheless, the artistic emotion of the reader is not excluded, as the semi-bareness of a phrase in a poem has the capacity to move the reader toward the author’s intimate thinking and the way he expressed his own thoughts and feelings. By recalling the proceeding of the Biblical accordance, this type of dictionaries represents the easiest way of entering the intimacy of a certain author’s poetic laboratory. Gheorge Moldoveanu divided his monumental Dictionary (853 pages) into two parts: the first part is an alphabetical repertory of all words, in contexts of various lengths; the second part is an amazingly thorough table that contains the decreasing frequency of these words. The entire structure implies the sense of a fundamental work that is built with reliability and talent. Thus, Octavian Goga’s poetic work, a Romanian writer, reveals itself in the innermost joints of its genesis.

Keywords: dictionary, poetic language, quantitative analysis, frequency.
