The Film Festivals in The Perspective Of Cultural Anthropology Case Study: Transilvania International Film Festival

The new morphology of film festivals brings a new light on film festivals and the theory of culture, especially with the new reconfiguration of festivals Europe, the insertion of new technologies and new opportunities to create networks. From the point of view of cultural anthropology, I analyze the new film festival rendering the distinction space/place; mapping/tracking replacing universal/particular; local/global, following contemporary approaches of convergence and network as more efficient in the globalization context. Film festivals shift away from the stereotyped category of nation and auteur as connected to Europe towards the global economy and the city . The case study of Transilvania International Film Festival is bringing forth questions regarding the Western European vs. Eastern European film festival models and how are the Eastern and Central European festivals incorporating the traits of the Western European film festival.

Personality Rights – a Legal Institution in Actuality

The rights of the personality have returned to the legal actuality with the new regulation of the Romanian Civil Code, which entered into force in 2011. The significance of the protection of the fundamental values of the human being has gained new dimensions, and the solutions issued by the national courts must also meet the standards of protection established at European level. The main rights of the personality benefit not only from a new legislative optics but also from jurisprudential extensions, generated by the mandatory decisions of the European courts. We have identified, for some of the most important rights of the personality, the modern connotations of the object of protection, as they appear in the judicial practice of recent years. The right to life, the right to physical and mental integrity, have classical alignments, interpreted non-uniform way by national and European courts. There is a new generation of personality rights, which will be consolidated under the enforcement of the European regulations on the fair process and personal data protection segments.

Konrad Lorenz Talking to the Animals: The So-Called Evil and the Civilized Man’s Deadly Sins

The current state of the Western civilization cannot be understood with no appeal to the intricate relationship between culture and nature. Based on the major findings produced during the last decade by ethology, and more especially by Konrad Lorenz, the article explores several key issues defining the Western civilization decay. The overcrowding of the cities, the low levels of social capital, the economic competition, the marketization of the everyday life, the decay of senses, the denial of genuine tradition, the destruction of the environment and the spread of weapons of mass-destruction, all point towards a significant pathological transformation of the modern society.

The Birth, Development, and Culturalization of Mărginimea Sibiului

Throughout the times, in the depth of any stable community traditions are born; the respective customs help the community both to resist in time and maintain intercultural exchanges with other communities. As transmitted from ancestral heritage, they can have a massive cultural impact on future generations, making them negotiate their search for renewal with their sensibility towards the past and the hostorical patrimony. Mărginimea Sibiului is an intercultural area known for its cultural heritage which was born, promoted and preserved for a long time, without being heavily impregnated by the sometimes unfavorable influences of globalization. The crafts, the popular harbor, the gastronomy and the lifestyle of the people from Mărginimea Sibiului make the area a very desirable destination for anthropologists and tourists, too.

Avram Iancu and the town of Sibiu

Three important Transylvanian towns are linked to Avram Iancu’s name: Cluj, Târgu Mureș and Sibiu. In Cluj he attended his high school studies and the upper law course between 1841-1846. In Târgu Mureş he did his lawyer (cancelist) internship between 1846 and the spring of 1848. He was here when the Revolution began. The years spent in the first two towns did not forecast that Avram Iancu would become the hero of the nation. Instead, Sibiu is linked to his name in the years of the Revolution (1848-1849). During the revolution, Avram Iancu came to the town of Sibiu several times to attend the meetings of the Permanent Committee of the Romanian Nation, whose member he was. Also after the invasion of Transylvania by the Hungarian revolutionary troops, he came to Sibiu to get informed about the course of events in the country and in the empire or to ask for weapons and supplies from the Austrian commandment. It was also in Sibiu, in 1852, when he gave the first signs of his distance from the world. In the years of his dramatic life he came to Sibiu several times, since the towan awakened memories and it was here that his good friend Ilie Măcelariu lived.

The Visit of Czar Nicholas II at Constanța (14th of June, 1914), as reflected in the press of the Central Powers

The events preceding the First World War triggered a revival in Romanian foreign policy, oriented for three decades towards the Central Powers. The actions of the Vienna Cabinet –contrary to Romania’s interests –during the Balkan Wars (1912-1913), but especially the situation of Transylvanian Romanians, under the rule of the dualist Hungary, prompted the beginning of Romania’s reorientation to the Entente.

The great powers of the Entente, especially France and Russiasought to take full advantage of the deterioration of the Romanian-Austro-Hungarian relations. Russia was most interested in weakening the influence of AustriaHungary in the Balkans and to draw Romania on the side of the Entente.

As a result, the visit of Russia’s Tsar in Constanța on 14 June 1914 produced the most vivid agitation in German and Austro-Hungarian diplomatic circles due to the advances that the powers of the Entente made in Romania.

The History and Origin of Chinese Characters (I)

The present article is the introductory section from a larger study entitled The History and Culture of Chinese Characters. The aim of this paper is not only to offer a better understanding of what is believed to be the origin of Chinese characters, but to further arouse the interest into this subject. I will first offer a short historical view of the Chinese characters by means of synthesizing the most relevant bibliographical sources in this respect. Furthermore, I will briefly describe three of the most important stories related to the origin of the Chinese characters.

Brand Name Translation as a Decisive Factor in Positioning Foreign Brands On Chinese Market (I)

Determining the brand name is always a crucial aspect in the development of a brand’s image and its correct positioning in the consumers’ mind. As the ideal name for a brand is always demanding to find, it becomes even harder to translate its original form in order to synchronize it to the culture and personality of the consumers of new, international market. It is even a more labyrinthine process to transfer a brand name from a phonographic language system to a logographic-based language system, such as Chinese, as Chinese writing is fundamentally different from other writing systems, in the way that it allows the interpretation of a word only at the broad level of the grapheme.

The purpose of this study is to examine and discuss the relation between translation approaches, cultural peculiarities and brand personality. In order to do this, 20 international brands, from five different categories were chosen through a focus group and analysed in order to show how and why Chinese consumers choose to adopt (or not) different foreign brands.

The Academic Library – Information and Research Resource Centre

Libraries are no longer the only institutions whose purpose is to preserve and make information available. However, library services are particular and specific: they grant access to impressive collections of organized information. These collections were put together over a long period of time and are continuously developing and diversifying.

If traditionally academic libraries are intermediaries between external information and subjects of internal communities, when it comes to open access, their role is to spread the materials produced internally to the outside. Thus, the role of academic libraries in promoting open access is ever more important.

With or without Hyphen? The Formation of the Plural and the Articulation of Neologisms

The way the plural and the articulation of neologisms are formed represents a topic worth debating in the context of the dynamics of a language. Some neologisms, imposing themselves in use, have the chance to get into the basic stock of words, while others come out of circulation. Neologisms that have the chance to remain are partially or totally adapted to the adopting language system. More specific, the adaptation or non-adaptation of neologisms to the phonetic-orthographic system specific of the Romanian language has implications on the spelling of articulated forms and plural forms, as well as on the syllabication or accentuation. I believe that the extensive process of language globalization has in many cases led to the return to etymon after a neologism was assimilated.

This article makes an inventory of borrowed neologisms, totally, partially or inappropriately adapted (with examples from the current media), insisting on recent ones.

Keywords: neologism, definite article, desinence, hyphen, media, update.

The Preverbal Usage of the Prepositions „entre” and „între”

In this article we propose a presentation of the preposition entre and its Romanian equivalent între, as well as a comparative analysis of the preverbs entre and între.

Our analysis starts from the observation that prepositions can become prefixes as a result of a grammaticalization process. This phenomenon takes place both in the French and in the Romanian language. The prefixed verbs we intend to analyze have been selected on the basis of explanatory dictionaries in both languages, and they have been evaluated from a morpho-syntactic and a semantic point of view.

In addition, the parallelism between the prepositions entre and între functions partially at the level of corresponding preverbs, and an extension of the semantic values of the preverbs may be observed.

Bakhita or what’s in a name? – the dynamics of identity reconstruction throughout memory work

The article focuses on the analysis of various aspects concerning the functions of name in Véronique Olmi’s recent novel Bakhita (2017). How can identity be reconstructed after the loss of the name and, more important, after the devastating experience of modern slavery? How relevant is the memory work in putting together the self and what are the literary techniques that the writer uses in constructing the novel? What are the limits of words and language in rendering Bakhita’s Harrowing to Hell and her Redemption?

Literary Legends: The “Daybreak Boys” of the Beat Generation

This article focuses on the birth of the Beat Generation in the 1950s as a natural reaction to mainstream culture in postwar America. Even though the Beat Generation’s literary productions were initially perceived as (obscene) provocations by allegedly uneducated writers, Beat literature has survived the test of time and is still influential today. The works of the most famous Beats, such as Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, or William S. Burroughs pushed the limits of what might be labeled “adequate” and eradicated censorship in (American) literature.

The American Dream Between Reality and Illusion

The American novel of the 1920s explored the mixture of experimental excitement about the new and anxious awareness of historical loss. F. Scott Fitzgerald perfectly express this epoch and subsequently became the representative of this decade in the literary field. Fitzgerald is also a novelist of immersion, deeply knowing the dreams of these years and fully understanding the meaning of “The American Dream”. But, as the title of his own novel The Beautiful and Damned suggested, there was a darker side of this earthly paradise, therefore almost all his writings, from The Great Gatsby to Tender is the Night have a touch of disaster in them. The author knew how to express the driving forces behind all the glittering social display and also to stress upon the psyche of this very specific age of economic overextension.

« Living on the Sound of My Voice ». Aspects of writing of the self in Anna de Noailles’ Le Livre de ma vie (The Book of My Life)

Throughout an attentive reading of Anna de Noailles’ autobiographical book, Le Livre de ma vie (1932), we will explore various aspects of autobiographical writing such as: the relation between time and memory, the work of recollecting and constructing a multiple identity, the springs of literary and existential becoming, the importance of reading and of meeting the personalities of the time on the creation of an insatiable spirit of culture. A true ethical concern seems to govern Anna de Noailles’ works and exploits, always in search for an authentic writing, faithful to life, considered as a principle of work.

The “Human Resources” of the Socialist Censorship. From Bureaucracy to Psychobiographies

Part of a larger research project dedicated to the study of censorship in Romania during communist regime, the present article focuses on the “human resources” mobilized by the political power between 1949 and 1977 and active within an institution specialized in censorship in literature, arts and media: the General Directorate for Press and Print (Direcţia Generală a Presei şi Tipăriturilor, DGPT) and, with a changed name beginning with 1975, the Committee for Press and Print (Comitetul pentru Presă și Tipărituri, CPT). Obviously, there is no censorship without censors. Assuming his/her role in an impersonal manner, the censor should ideally be a transparent medium (Thomas Schlesser) through which the objectives of the party-state are accurately transmitted and applied. In reality, the censor carries all the vices of this profession. Detested by most, although admired by others, the censors were fearsome persons. Abstract bureaucrats condemned to remain anonymous while working in the proximity of celebrity, the censors were self-sufficient and arrogant. Highly intolerant and reluctant, as the job description requires, they had a cynical– or indifferent, at best – approach towards the destructive effect of their work. What is more is that by intervening politically in the artwork by correcting it, some censors were convinced, with an incredible vanity, that they participate to the act of creation. Incurable flunkies, they had, however, a strong team spirit. People’s hatred against them was equal only to the hate they have against people. There were only a few who assisted to the birth of this “institution” of censorship, but there were none to regret its disappearance. Like any other “identity kits”, the portrait sketched in this essay hides in itself a history and tries to compress a typology, both of them remade after a long search and research in the dust of the archives.

Love Songs, Engagement Songs and Wedding Songs

The present writing aims at re-examining the rich Aromanian repertoire of love, engagement and wedding songs from the area of Veria (Greece). The traditional Aromanian poem is an important poetic document, with an undeniable beauty. For the Aromanians, the song represents something sacred and sublime, which also needs a predetermined context: the engagement, the wedding or parties. In her research, the author has used the extant collections in Greek language, as well as some ofthe numerous collections that could be found in Romanian language. The major new element is constituted by the critical reassessment of the published writings through the perspective of modernity, and also the putting into circulation of some old, lesser known texts.

Exile and Marginality. A Possible Re-Thinking of Romanian Exiles

The paper attempts to identify some of the motivations of exile in the case of Romanian writers and painters of Jewish or German origin during the 20th century, and to assess the possibilities of their artistic assimilation into the European or world culture, according to the strategies and modes of creative discourse: from the experimental character of the avant-garde to the apparently aestheticizing forms having opposed the official discourses of the communist regime.

„Life Is Elsewhere”. Notes On The Contemporary Diary”

The present article focuses on the particularities of the contemporary diary as a literary form, with a case study on Radu Vancu’s recent book The Sign of Cancer. Diary 2012-2015, in wich persists a certain impression of the desubstantialization of the real ego, somehow in contradiction with the stakes of an intimate diary, although the species as such is not longer exclusively assimilated to non-fiction, as demonstrated by the theoreticians of the genre. The author considers that, if poetry is a genre of the biography, the journal is a genre of the lyric – i.e. the intensification, in the etymological sense, of pulsations, emotions, feelings.
