The Current Debatable Status of four untranslated Short Prose Writings embraced by Kafka’s International Reception  in Romania

Franz Kafka should be regarded as the most iconic and distinct modern writer that created unique pieces of literature. As it is almost generally agreed that he is to be appreciated especially for the creation of his short prose writings, it is the purpose of the following paper to discuss the extent to which this is achieved. The translation of some words and phrases is debated and pondered upon. Thus, his influence on European literature becomes relentless and in a wider international context he remains an unshattered landmark much debated upon on international conferences and literary symposiums. The emphasis is laid upon the continuous struggle that literary exegetes encountered at the meticulous translation of his texts. Hence, the study aims to embrace the furthering of the research field of his texts and to underline, in spite of all the denial and negative comment the imperishable value of his literary heritage.

Latinity: a paradigm shift from global language to enabler of globalization

Communication represents one of the key competencies in a knowledge-based society enabling both empowerment and employment; it is also an effective vehicle for connectivity, cultural innovation and bridging polarities. The triad communication – culture – language should be considered as an essential instrument for overcoming any “cultural shock” in today`s multipolar world. Since communication and human interaction are heavily mediated by culture and facilitated by language, hence an unbiased, complex understanding and awareness of other “cultural grids” is a prerequisite for effective interaction and cooperation. Communication does not equal presuming, rather it requires thorough knowledge of language, intellectual empathy and a comprehensive understanding of culture and its main aim is to connect: individuals, communities, geographical or cultural regions of the world. The effectiveness of intercultural communication relies on the power and impact of discourse as well as the ability to empathize with the others. The main goal of the present study is to provide a definition and reassessment of the concept of “international language” mainly grounded on economic and cultural pillars, revolving around the notion of power. The novelty and originality of the present study reside in highlighting the connection between tradition and modernity, between East and West. Chinese language has the potential of becoming international also due to the Romanization of Chinese characters, by means of a worldwide accepted system – Hanyu Pinyin.

The History Dimension in Dimitrie Cantemir’s Work

It is no secret that Dimitrie Cantemir was interested in sciences, politics, literature, philosophy, music or travelling, being a highly illuminated “spiritus rector” of the medieval era. Our thesis is that history regains its vitality by emerging in a rhetoric of challenge and mystification. For this reason, the truth is searched by all means. His historical works, based on the principle of causality, depict a world seen almost scientifically. Besides the appearance of fiction, we find a solid web of symbols, heraldic, mythology, passion for discovering the unknown, doubled by a powerful narrative talent and erudite style.

The historiography of 9th-11th centuries on cemeteries with pottery from intra-Carpathian area

The article reviews the historiography of archaeological sites from the 9th to 11th centuries, with an emphasis on necropolises featuring ceramic bowl offerings. These sites are those of Alba Iulia (Stația de Salvare, Dealul Șumuleu, Izvorul Împăratului, Str. Brândușei), Blandiana (La Brod), Cluj-Napoca (Str. Zapolya), Gâmbaș (Măguricea), Iernut (Biserică), Orăștie (Dealul Pemilor X2) and Sebeș. The first discoveries were made by Hungarian researchers at the end of the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century (Cluj-Napoca – Str. Zapolya, Alba Iulia – Stația de Salvare). The Romanian archaeological research highlights the necropolises of Blandiana, where K. Horedt dug, and Stația de Salvare in Alba Iulia, which was researched in several stages after 1945 (but only the results of the period 1981-1985 were largely published). After 1990, researchers of the newer generation are focusing on this type of necropolis. New dedicated studies were published and new archaeological sites were started (Orăștie, Alba Iulia – Str. Brândușei, Izvorul Împăratului).

The Position of the Triple Alliance towards Romania in the Danube Question (1880-1883)

The Danube, one of the major rivers of Europe, had a special significance in the life of the peoples of the continent. Connecting Central Europe and the Orient, the Danube was the most important European trade axis. For Romania, the river has always had a special significance.

On the occasion of the peace Congress of Paris (1856), the European Commission of the Danube was founded, an organization established in order to draw up the applicable navigation and police regulations on the entire course of the river. At the same time, however, the plenipotentiaries of the great powers assembled in Berlin (1878), after a series of rather marginal negotiations, left open the question of the regulation of the navigation on the Danube and the Black Sea Straits, although the latter was indeed the key to the whole “Oriental Question”.

Stere – A Portrait in Fragments

Constantin Stere came to be regarded as one of the most daring and complex political and social thinkers to emerge in the first decades of the 20th century. Indebted to russian populism, his ideas moulded an entire generation and were seminal in reshaping the intellectual landscape. In the same time, Stere is more than meets the eye. A traitor to some, a hero to others, a novelist that brings conjures up the powerful vein of the russian writers. The purpose of this essay is to provide the reader with the templates for a future reappraisal of Stere’s work.

Restorations of the Metropolitan Cathedral of Sibiu during 1958 – 1966

The metropolitan cathedral’s history would be poorer without the whole history of its painting. The history of the cathedral’s painting (in its different techniques and styles) is a separate one and is as interesting as the building of the church. In this short article, there are presented the different steps made during the history of the 20th century in order to preserve the original painting and than to complete the painting of Octavian Smigelschi.

„As a Modest Cinderella, Behind the Buildings Wich Sorround It…” – Following the Church of the Greek Company from Sibiu

Although regarding the Metropolitan Cathedral of Sibiu were written constantly a lot of studies, about the little Greek church that lasted until the summer of 1902 we have only very few information. Starting from these we will try to systematize a short history of the church and of the “Greek Company”, who built it at the end of the 18th century. Knowing the past events, the historical conditions, the harshness of those years, we can appreciate better the endeavor and the struggle of the Orthodox people to build a place of worship that was sacrificed after 200 years in order to make place for the present Cathedral. By her unique destiny this little church prepared the construction of this monumental building, endowed with an intrinsic value, meant to express the unity and greatness of a community reborn after centuries of injustice. That church was the place of metropolitan councils and a living testimony to the power of mobilizing national and religious consciousness of the Romanians in Transylvania.

Octavian Smigelschi – monumental painting and national religious art initiator

Visionary and innovative, Smigelschi undertakes to regenarate religious art. This endeavour, în his viewm could not be separated from making use of the knowledge of perspective, anatomy, draping, chromatic, etc, but also of creatively employing Romanian traditional decorative patterns. His closeness to ordinary people, his art, the picturalness of his creation, based on nationalism and piousness, based also on the movement of loght and shade, on the enhancement of the fundamental colour, on the decorative motifs created from the busy fingers of the peasant women, turned Smigelschi into a pathfinder that other great creators followed and into the innovator of a new artistic and religious style – NeoByzantine, so that he will always be a model of diligence and perseverance.

The Metropolitan Cathedral in Sibiu, 50 Years Ago

Monument with a symbolic value for the spirituality of the Transylvanian Romanians, the “Holy Trinity” Orthodox cathedral in Sibiu was built in the early years of the twentieth century. Its decoration with wall paintings was done only later, in two stages. First, in 1905, Octavian Smigelschi completed a partial décor, including the painted panels of the iconostasis and the mural painting that covers the dome of the nave and the pendants placed between the arches which support the dome. During the second stage, which took place only later, between 1962 and 1965, after a pause of 53 years, the iconographic assembly was completed.

The outstanding contribution of the painter Octavian Smigelschi has often been highlighted; however, only few things have been written so far about the ones who continued his work. This study brings unpublished information and excerpts from archival documents about the completion, half a century ago, of this monumental work and about the actors involved in the process.

The Cathedral’s Pulpit, the Height of the Spoken Logos. The beginnings of the preaching and their impact on the culture of “The Theological Review” from Sibiu (1907-1925)

The building and consecration of the new metropolitan Cathedral in Sibiu was not the end, but the beginning of the process which continues till nowadays. The preaching from the metropolitan Cathedral is not an accident of cultural genesis and the article proves that there may be met a benefic competition between the priests. Maybe in the dimensions of the cathedral and in the very good quality of the preaching here stays the answer to the very good quality of the preaching here. The author sees everything also from the perspective of the Lutheran and Catholic competition and examples present in the town of Sibiu. For the evolution of the preaching history and technique the author uses one of the most authentic sources on this field, The Theological Review, which starts to be edited in Sibiu by Professor Nicolae Bălan, the future Metropolitan of Transylvania, which began to be published in 1907.
