Cioran or “How can one be European?”
The recent European crisis has triggered more Euroskepticism than ever, however, doubts about Europe’s destiny are not new. When Cioran wrote about the decline of Europe, he was not regretting the failure of Hitler’s idea of the “New Europe” as some critics said. Although they may seem based on xenophobic stereotypes, his writings underline the absurdity of nationalism and the uncertainties of geopolitics.
