The Ethics of Scientific Research in Social Sciences

The current approach of research ethics is strongly influenced by the principles stated in the most important biomedical documents, the Nuremberg Code, the Helsinki Declaration, the Belmont Report and the CIOMS Guide. The current concerns about the ethical quality of scientific research have led to a more severe regulation of this field. Universities, research units and institutions need to develop ethical guidelines and set up research ethics boards to ethically review research projects involving humans. The core principles, that underpin the ethical codes, are respect for persons, concern for welfare, the duty to do no harm, and justice. These dominant principles, and the good practices resulting from their application were initially developed by bioethicists, but later they were extended to other academic disciplines. The expansion of regulations based on bioethics to social sciences has not been uncontested, the most important critiques focusing on radical separation from the biomedical approach and its core principles, and on replacing the current system of ethics review with a less rigid one.

Without Corpus Delicti: Reflections on Contemporary Eschatological Tmes

Starting from Žižek’s statement that we are living in the end times, this article aims to analyse the eschatological character of the end of the 20th century – beginning of the 21st century, making a comparison with another historical period that was thinking of itself in eschatological terms: the beginning of the 20th century. If we take a look at the last 60-70 years, we discover a series of famous deaths which marked the shift from agonizing modernity to jovial postmodernity and shaped the way we think and act in the contemporary world: The End of Ideologies (1960, Daniel Bell), The Death of the Man (1966, Michel Foucault), The Death of the Author (1967, Roland Barthes), The End of History (1989, Francis Fukuyama), The Death of Comparative Literature (2003, Gayatri Spivak) etc. What’s interesting is that none of these cases have a corpus delicti, the dead body – a finding which opens at least two interpretive tracks. First, the absence of the corpse takes death out of the implacable, emphasizing instead a death-life continuum, in which dead, outdated elements happily coexists with living, new elements. Thus, death is no longer seen as a categorical, definitive act, but as a fertile, liberating metamorphosis (as happens in posthumanism, in nonhuman turn etc.). Secondly, this absence means the disappearing of all the anxieties the corpse has traditionally caused. Therefore, it marks the shift from a society of negativity and prohibitions to a society of enjoyment and positivity. This happy (postmodern) society is a postmortem society.

Keywords: eschatology, corpus delicti, corpse, death-life continuum, posthumanism, nonhuman turn, postmodernity, society of enjoyment, postmortem society.

From Theoretical Anti-Communism to Pragmatic Anti-Capitalism: Romanian Literary Magazines Between 1990 and 1993

In this paper I analyze how the literary magazines in the early years of Romanian post-communism began to update their strong anti-communist position with a series of doubts concerning capitalism. It was not about capitalism per se, which inspired a rather favorable perception, but about the austerity measures imposed after 1989 during the transition from the communist centralized market to the post-communist free market. Given its generosity toward financing the literary superstructure, the communist regime began to be reconsidered in a rather favorable light when compared to the financially decompressed post-communist present. The inherent comparison between the “generous” communism and the austere capitalism triggered an ideological tension relevant for the post-communist Romania.

Post Communist Restaurations and Re-readings. Ana Blandiana’s Arhitectura valurilor / Arhitecture of the waves

This article aims at restoring the context in which Ana Blandiana’s poetry volume, Arhitectura Valurilor, was published in 1990. The volume reunites poems written within the last years of communism and it had been banned from publishing since 1987. It represents a major turn in Ana Blandiana’s literary biography, due to the transparent revolt against the communist regime. The political charge of the texts raises difficulties in interpretation: following only an aesthetical criterium, as required by the author herself and by some literary critics or including a political and an ethical criteria, in order to restore the complexity of the poems as anti-communist statements?

Consensus and Value (About the Paradoxes of the Canonic Idea)

The paper tries to raise some issues of a philosophical nature, pertaining to the idea of literary canon. The history of the canon is usually presented in one of two ways: either the canon is depicted as the result of social negotiation (the consensual explanation), or as the true reflection of a stable history of the permanent values of a culture (otherwise known as the best that has been thought and said”). I argue that there are problems with each and that none is entirely true by itself alone, concluding that the consensual explanation is probably a more useful way of looking at cultural history.

Modernity and the Children the Unknown –  The Presence of Lacunar Forms

The following article discuses the forms of emptiness and voids in which modernity has weaved meaning and has founded the subject as bearer of these separated forms of reality (like nonrecognition, suspension, commencement). We argue that the language of modern experience is inscribed by the figures of these lacunae and their in-communicability whose residues mark the creation of significance. There is a general focus in research on mental images and their relation with the symbolic, but what if the poetics of the unknown and oblivion can open up discussions about the way in which the Real is structured by the interaction between propositional and non-propositional thinking? This is one of the aspects this article investigates: the unknown author that modernity has turned into its father and the disconnectedness which encompasses woven modern subjectivity.

Secession Influences in Blaga’s Poetry

This essay analyses the impact of the years spent in Vienna on the formation of Lucian Blaga, taking into consideration the fact that, at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, the capital of the Empire was the centre of an impressive art movement called the “Vienna Secession”. The aim of this paper is to identify the similarities that can be established between the art of the painter Gustav Klimt, a representative figure for that period and the president of Secession, and the poetry of Blaga. The comparison includes the symbols to be found in the works of the two artists, such as the spring flowers and the serpents, the dominant colours, the type of lines used in the creation of their images and the reaction of people to their modern art.

Relational Triangles and Psychological Collisions in Yuri Bondarev’s Prose

The article explores the mutations of the Soviet war prose during the Thaw with a special focus on Yuri Bondarev’s novel Hot Snow (1970). The psychological perspective, deheroization and gloomy atmosphere of daily reality of the trenches are specific aspects of the second wave of war prose written by former soldiers. “Lieutenants’ prose”, as it was known in Soviet criticism, is focused on a battle or battalion, offering glimpses into the psychological world of the simple soldier rather than a general heroic overview of the war (massshatbnost`). Bondarev’s novel may be considered symptomatic for the war prose of the post-Stalinist period, as it retains features of his generation of writers. On the other hand, the article reveals two specific traits of the analysed novel – relational triangles and psychological collisions.

Etruscan Love

Coleta de Sabata, professor at the Technical University of Timişoara, was the second woman appointed president of a university in the history of Romanian higher education. After a very rich and fruitful career in engineering and academia, Coleta de Sabata turned to literature. Her novel “The Tusculan Beauty” deftly combines the features of a thriller and a love story. At world level the machinations of the Securitate and a hidden Etruscan secret society compete in creating an atmosphere of terror, mystery, and excitement.

100 years of Romanian Education: Failures and Achievements

Romanians tend to define themselves as a nation of “education lovers”. Despite this positive self-perception, it is no secret that the educational system is incapable of improving the potential of the Romanian society. Recently, in December 2018, the Presidential Administration of Romania launched a public debate regarding the way in which education should develop in the next 20 to 50 years. Entitled “România Educată”, the initiative hasn’t succeeded in generating a national debate regarding this issue. In other words, the Romanian society and political class are not convinced and aware of the fact that education can indeed be a mechanism of social change and of economic development. Nevertheless, in order to “contextualize” and to emphasize an apocalyptical image upon the current system of education in Romania, critics usually tend to uncritically praise previous systems of education from Greater Romania or from the communist regime. The result is a sort of antithetic discourse that offers little incentives for the present debate. For this reason, the main challenge of this study is to find out if the Romanian system of education of the last century was, indeed, conceived as a true investment in the human capital. No matter how vast the subject may sound, the authors would focus on the evolution of the educational ideal in the last century, while contextualizing the performance of the educational systems with statistical and comparative data.

The Human Capital of the Kurdish Region of Iraq. Kurdish Returnee(s) as a Possible Agent for a State-Building Process Solution

The region of Iraqi Kurdistan (KRI) has undergone to a great change in the economic and social aspects in the last 10 years, the reason and the determinants that brought this modifications has been slightly explored by past scholars. One of the new aspect that touched the region has been the increasing number of returnees, which started after a specific date, the 2013, year of the economic boom in the KRI. This article analyzes how in the region of Iraqi Kurdistan, the improvement of the economic sectors and number of returnees are interconnected, and how when these two data grow, the condition of quasi-state and independence (mainly economic) from the central government also increases. While, when these two data fall, the condition of quasi-state and the conflictual condition with Baghdad stabilized, transforming the situation into a prolonged conflict. For this research four key factors have been analyzed in the period from 2013 till mid-2017: 1) number of returnees, 2) economic growth, 3) business in the energy sector and 4) quasi-state condition. The peculiarity of this article is that thanks to this specific analysis we can understand why and when the KRI reached an higher level of independence from the Iraqi state and why and how this dependence failed. In this article we can see how the condition of quasi-state stopped to improve not because of the September Referendum (which is not mentioned in the study because the time frame detected do not take it into consideration), but because the Kurdish Regional Government made a decisional mistake regarding its economic vision. The results helps us in obtaining a more detailed idea of how the Iraqi Kurds reality can change based on a triadic model: returnees, economic investments and quasi-state condition.

Keywords: Iraqi Kurdistan, returnees, economy, actors, quasi-state, human capital.

The Last Five Weeks of Hasburg Imperial Austria (October – November)

In just five weeks’ time, the imperial Habsburg Austria underwent a quick dissolution process and ceased to exist. The Slavs in the south started this process aiming to create Yugoslavia, but the Czechs contributed significantly to it in their attempt to create Czechoslovakia. In both cases, Hungarian territories were also targeted. Under these circumstances, the Imperial Court in Vienna initiated negotiations with Hungarian politicians to gain their support for an administrative reform to be enforced throughout the monarchy. Hungarian politicians refused with obstinately, so that ultimately the planned reform could only cover the territories of the former dualist Austria. While the imperial Manifesto dated October 16, but issued on October 18, stipulated the federalisation of Austria, the Hungarian Parliament voted Hungary’s independence from Austria. However, four independent states were simultaneously established on 19 October in Zagreb, Prague, Vienna and Lviv: Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, Austrian and Ukrainian, all with territorial claims on Hungary and with Ukrainian claims on Bucovina. In October 27, Romanians in Cernăuți organised themselves and decided to unite with Romania. Three days later, an Austrian government was set up in Vienna, so between October 31 and November 11 there were two parallel governments, one for the establishment of the new Austrian state and the other for the winding-up of the old Austrian state. On November 11, since he was left with neither territory under his rule nor subjects, Emperor Karl I signed in pencil his declaration of renouncing the exercise of his prerogatives, refusing to use the term abdication.

Sporting activities at Gheorghe Lazăr State High School of Sibiu between the two World Wars

This article focuses on the sports activities carried out by the students attending “Gheorghe Lazăr” State High School from Sibiu, during the inter-war period. The activities displayed there were both from the scouting area (field trips, socials) and from the sports area (ice-skating, sled riding, swimming, football, volleyball, athleticism and gymnastic) and were executed in connection with the analytical curriculum, but also within the already created bodies („Sunrise” sports society and „Negoiul” scout cohort). The high school students did not miss the inter-school competitions from Blaj held with the occasion of the celebrations of 3/15 May 1923, 1924 and 1934, where they received various distinctions (fourth place with reward, bronze statue given by the Ministry of National Education). In addition to the “gymnastic performances” held on various occasions during this period, other manifestations are worth mentioning, such as the national competition of oina (1928), the regional inter-school championships of athletics and volleyball (1932) and the sport festivity of 20th May 1934. The attention given to physical education was possible as a result of the dedication and involvement of elite professors such as C. M. Ionescu, Dumitru Branga and Octavian Salvan.

The Role of Dual Citizenship in the Life of Transnational Families in the Republic of Moldova

The Republic of Moldova is a country with a high emigration rate.  The history of migration from the Republic of Moldova has a certain age and this influences the structure of transnational families lives which have their roots in this country. The migration of work force is not a new process but a common practice as during the soviet period and, as the recent studies show, with a high increase during the past 20 years. Today the society from the Republic of Moldova is divided between those who practice migration towards the Russian Federation – especially Moscow area – and those who leave for Romania. Those who choose Romania as their destination, face some challenges of transnational family life and this is the subject of this article. Sooner or later, their aim is to regain or obtain the Romanian citizenship – different processes but with the same finality. The article analyzes the way in which the Moldovan family life is modeled by regaining or obtaining the Romanian citizenship.
