The Transnational Family – Representation and Practices

The aim of this study is to investigate the main (re)structures of the kinship in the Romanian society under the impact of external migration after 1989. One of the findings of the study shows that in the Romanian traditional society, preserving kinship cohesion meant a series of obligations and liabilities that were often transmitted from one generation to another without being questioned. They basically constituted and maintained the channel of communication between family members. The members of transnational families have absorbed these traditional structures, weaving over new formulas to adapt family practices (Morgan: 2011) to the specificity of transnational living, reformulating at the same time the traditional rules of kinship and adapting them to the new way of living. The study is based on materials derived from a qualitative research in two communities – one in Romania and one abroad.

Mural Painting in Maramureș by Anca Bratu: A Comprehensive Study of Religious Visuality in the 18th and 19th Centuries Northern Transylvania

Highly appreciated by professionals, artists as well as ordinary spectators, mural painting in Maramureș is a captivating chapter of traditional arts in Romania. The wooden churches situated in this geographical area are best known for their peculiar architecture and mural painting. As Anca Bratu highlights in her book, mural painting connects Orthodox traditions with Western European baroque urban influences. The author describes more than two centuries of religious representations in a contact zone where mural painters successfully synthesized the values of the post-byzantine period and western cultural trends such as Baroque and Rococo. Mural Painting in Maramureș is among the most valuable, precise, fine-grained and relevant analyses of the cultural phenomena echoing continuities and discontinuities of religious visuality in the northern part of Transylvania during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Notes On Anxiety Of Learning Romanian As Foreign Language And Intercultural Communication

Going through multiple transfers and interferences, constantly changing, the Romanian language and its  study  face an increased interest from citizens of other nationalities.  Language research must transcend its approach as a system of signs and insist on it as functionality, as a social determined individual product. Language evolves not only in structural relationships that maintain the system in balance, but also, in relation to other phenomena of a spiritual, cultural, artistic, social, extra-linguistic nature. This paper aims to review some theories of foreign language anxiety and some factors that occured during the process of teaching and learning of Romanian as foreign language observed as intercultural communication.

Romanian Literature as a Transnational Phenomenon

The present article seeks to present succinctly the current state of literary studies in the Romanian cultural and academic space. Following the different paradigm shifts in Western literary theory, be it “the transnational turn”, “the spatial turn” or recent developments in the field of World Literature studies, the paper tries to explain not only today’s developments in critical trends, but also the conditions of the reception of these methodological turns in Romania. In what follows, I will provide a concise exposition of the most recent collective research projects developed in Romania, analysing their premises and anticipating their potential fulfilments for the evolution of critical theory in the autochthonous space.

Anti-colonization and Self-colonization: A Cause-Effect Relationship.The Case of Translations

This study sets out to analyze the concept of self-colonization, theorized by Alexander Kiossev, as a phenomenon caused either by colonial or national constraints. To put it another way, self-colonization becomes a form of anti-colonization and anti-nationalism. The studies on translation published by Andrei Terian, Cosmin Borza and Ștefan Baghiu in The Culture of Translation in Romania represent the starting point for this approach. On the one hand, I focused on the cultural politics promoted by the leaders of the Romanian populist movements. The numerous translations of literary works belonging even to peripheral cultures represent a form of self-colonization. In this case, the self-subordination attitude is caused by the attempt to counterbalance the monopoly of French culture. On the other hand, the same strategy can be observed during the second half of the 20th century, when the translation of texts belonging to Western cultures aimed at avoiding both the Soviet colonization and the national-communist doctrine.

Recent Quantitative Studies in Romania. Between Institutional Analysis and the Topic of Translation

The aim of this study is to analyze the usage of quantitative methods in Romania’s contemporary literary studies. In spite of the general reluctance to any positivist approach to literary phenomena, this paper shows that recent quantitative studies have been useful to discovering and understanding certain aspects of Romania’s literary history. There are two identified functionalities of quantitative methods after 2000: one is institutional analysis, which is focused on interpreting statistical data on economic and sociological literary factors; the other takes interest in the number and frequency of literary publications and translations, in order to explain the evolution and circulation of forms, literary structures and plots in relationship to a given historical context. It is necessary to comprehend what are these quantitative studies’ objectives, limits and problematizations in the case of a peripheral culture and how they can open up local literary studies to a new perspective on the literary system. Therefore, this thesis both indexes the latest autochthonous quantitative studies and examines their functions and results.

Translation and comparative studies seem to have one central aspect in common: the mechanisms of exportability. The strategies employed in these fields of study point towards this tendency. This paper proposes a survey into the localised model of Romanian translation studies in order to attempt to examine the new criteria specific to the contemporary trends. Globalization, the digital era and cultural mediation have proven, time and again, that contemporary literary studies work towards breaking the boundaries of national pattern. It would seem that recent endeavours in the field of translation studies build towards preserving the models of cultural mediation, which are nowadays linked to transnational phenomena. My study, therefore, aims to delve into this theoretical and methodological trend and tries to explain a few patterns in the methodologies used in a few recent studies.

Intersections and Influences: Translation, Romanian Literature, and World Literature

The aim of this paper is to present the contribution of the volume The Culture of Translation in Romania to both the scholarly debates on translation studies and world literature. The three sections of the volume focus on the theory, practice and reception of translation from a Romanian cultural perspective. Although it is conceived as an attempt to highlight the need for a shift of perspective in Romanian translation studies, the wide variety of approaches and literary works that are tackled in this volume open up to a world literature and therefore leads to a debate on the link between these two theoretical approaches.

Theory/Literature/Culture. The Legacy of Literary Theory in the “Post-Theoretical” Age*

In After Theory, Terry Eagleton claimed that literary and cultural studies are now in their post-theoretical age. Since then, more and more voices have echoed his statement. As Jonathan Culler put it as early as 2000 (The Literary in Theory), we are very much aware of the end of our faith in “high theory.” However, this proves not only that theory isn’t dead yet, but also that theory, be it literary or cultural, lives on implicitly or rather explicitly in the analytical, critical or hermeneutical approaches that are nowadays at the core of the discourse on literature and culture. Starting from these assumptions, this paper seeks to portray what we see today as the legacy of the theoretical discourse on literature and culture in the 20th century.

Carlos Fuentes’ Fiction Between the Literary Pattern and the Narrative Innovation

Since his first writings, Carlos Fuentes tried to change the Latin American manner of dealing with the question of reality, truth, fiction and the relationship among them. Of course, the great tradition of his predecessors was important to him, but the Mexican writer attempted to situate his fiction within a completely new delimitated narrative and symbolic space. All these are to be found in his preoccupation with the images or significances of death and dying, of extinction and of disappearance. His last novels and short story collections (such as Destiny and Desire, Happy Families or Disturbing Company) also prove his desire to express the new kind of reality always shaping according to the work of imagination. Fuentes reads in his own way the great literature before him and offers an exquisite answer to all the narrative challenges represented by the great tradition of the Hispanic canon.

The Importance of the Father in the Novel My Struggle by Karl Ove Knausgård

The following paper aims at reconstructing the emotional universe of the main character of the novel My Struggle in relation to a father figure. Counting on previous research on affective narratology, the paper suggests a way of reading in which the father-son relationship lays central and it shows how it organizes not only the thematic universe of the characters but also the narrative structure of the book. The construction of the main character in the second part of Book One is analyzed according to several scenarios that follow him pursuing different goals after the death of his father. Seen in a broader perspective, the analysis conducted in this paper can be definitory for the entire novel sequence.

The presence of Romanians at The Great National Assembly of Alba Iulia (1918), as reflected by the ASTRA Report (1922)

Upon the convocation of the National Assembly from Alba Iulia, the Great Council of the Romanian Nation from Hungary and Transylvania was expressing, on November 7/20, 1918, its hope that in addition to the elected and appointed delegates, “the Romanian people themselves shall be present in numbers worthy of such a great and holy cause.” The call did not go unnoticed, as there was an impressive number of Romanians that attended the Great Union of November 18 / December 1, 1918, despite the poor political, sanitary, climatic and technical conditions. The number of participants was estimated by the organizers to have been 100,000, a number transmitted immediately on the media (starting with The Romanian – Românul from Arad) and diplomatic channels. As opposed to the viewpoint of the organizers, the journalists of The Union – Unirea from Blaj estimated a number of 50 – 60.000 Romanians. As time passed, the number of 100.000 became a conventional milestone of the national historiography and imaginary of Romania. The axiomatic discourse on the topic acquires less certain values and interesting nuances, by resorting to the only historical source of a nature other than mediatic, diplomatic or memorialistic, with evident national-political and subjective connotations, the report realesd by ASTRA in 1922. The semi-structured interview, titled “Report” – addresses on the last point, the fourth one, precisely the issue regarding the number of participants at the Assembly from Alba Iulia. The partial failure to apply the interview and the less expected answers sealed the fate of this source for a century. This study provides a critical and statistical approach to ASTRA’s “Reports”, focusing on the presence of the Romanians at Alba Iulia on November 18/December 1, 1918.

The Royal Family in Sibiu in the first years after the Union

The visits undertaken by representatives of the royal family in Transylvania in the interwar period have a special meaning. The physical presence of members of the dynasty of Romania represented an act of affirmation of the legitimacy and suzerainty over the territory acquired in 1918. This was even more necessary under the circumstances that after the First World War the political circles in Hungary launched a sudden campaign of an unprecedented vehemence and scale, asking for the support of the international public opinion and of the governments of the Western countries, for the revision of the Trianon Treaty, which had ‘mutilated’ the Hungarian state borders, aiming at the restitution of Transylvania which had been unfairly ‘torn off’ the body of Hungary. Also, one should not forget that the Transylvanian Romanians had lived for more than two centuries under an imperial regime in which the myth of ‘the good emperor’ had been deeply engraved in the collective mentality. A new symbolic image meant to replace the picture of the former sovereigns had to be engineered. Through the major reasons that it fulfilled in the national movement of the Transylvanian Romanians in the modern age, through its exceptional contribution to the defense and development of the national culture, by its institutions and great scholars, the town of Sibiu individualized itself strongly and forever in the Romanian history. Therefore, the town could not be omitted by the royal family in its visits in Transylvania and, indeed, the presence of the sovereigns of Romania is repeatedly reported in Sibiu in the first interwar decade. The study aims to capture the way the residents of Sibiu reacted to these events.
