Fragments of Humanity: The Transistrian Ghetto seen through the Eyes of a Young Girl named Sonia Palty 1

This paper explores the description of the deportation to a ghetto in Transnistria in 1942 of Sonia Palty, a young Romanian Jewish girl, insisting on some aspects that underline the storage of humanity as a form of resistance in such a climate. The life in the ghetto seen through the eyes of a fourteen-year-old girl demands, apart from the description of the living atrocities, the presentation of such common events as the birthday celebration, the falling in love for the first time, the Christmas Day and singing carols. The childhood memories give to the experience a humanised perspective upon realities. The storytelling in the ghetto acts as a mean of breaking out in the secured space before deportation, and heals the traumas lived by a child.

The Aesthetics of Absence in Iustin Panța’s Poetry (II)

This paper argues that absence can be found in Iustin Panța’s poetry at different levels. One of them would be the language level, the simple objects forming a universe in which their inherent meaning is absent. Another one is the one in which the essence is replaced by a false value in an era in which the appearances matter more. The self is continuously trying to reach the past which, besides imagination, is the only form of having contact with the person he loves. Because of this, the present and the past mingle and the self cannot make the difference between them anymore, the absence being identified also to a psychologic level this way.

Four or One?

This paper proposes a new analysis of Mateiu Caragiale’s novel Craii de Curtea-Veche, belonging to the Romanian literary canon, which to demonstrate that the well-known characters in the novel lack substantiality in the traditional form of the realist novel and are thus mere epitomes of vices.

From Close Reading to Distant Reading. Evolutions in Comparative Studies

The theme of my proposal concerns quantitative methods and digital analysis in the recent literary theory. Starting from the assumption of the impossibility of accessing traditional ways of reading a textual corpus in its integrity (here I refer both to the exponential growth of interest for ex-centric literature, following the explosion of post-colonial studies, and to the discovery, as a result of several quantitative analyses, of a serious number of exponents for the central literatures), the quantitative research, and also the updated version of the literary analysis by means of the informational technology offers an ample theoretical area that deserves to be debated and disseminated in the Romanian academic field. From a comparatist perspective, I will try to trace the specific characteristics for the new paradigm of digital humanities and for the way in which the new methods of research can generate mutations of the comparatist discourse. My attempt is to make clear the concepts of quantitative research (distant reading, close reading) and digital humanities, and also to highlight the specific characteristics of the notions that are in the scope of this concept. Furthermore, I will try to question the relation between the methodological turn related to the most recent technologies and the traditional ways of reading and interpretation. Last but not least, I attempt to highlight the relation of influence between theories which precede the assessment of the concept digital, per se, and the ones that lead the research towards employing technological resources.
