Abstract

The Social Dimension of God’s Experience.

The Reconfiguration of Religious Experience in Modern East-European Society

The present study examines the contemporary situations of Eastern European societies; after an aggresive „scientific atheism” promoted and forcefully imposed by the Communist regimes, their Churches have had to deal with the central question whether the living God can be an effective engine of social action and communication. Christianism has to be redefined in post-Communist societies in accordance with its experiences in the Western world; the article observes and summarizes the efforts of religious sociology towards the articulation of a Romanian experience of reintegrating Christian experience in the humanism which coalesces and civilizes modern society.

Keywords: religious sociology, post-Communist societies, post-Communism and post-Christianism, God and social action, contemporary religious experience in Romania
