“Such outlaws who fraternize with the people”:

The Invention of the Haiduk in the Romantic Romanian Culture

Abstract: In this paper I examine the discourse on banditry (haiducie) articulated by the romantic elite of 19th century Romania. By relying on the various literary productions of the era, from short stories to memoirs and travel literature, I posit that the image of the noble bandit is rather manufactured by the elite to fit their political agenda, if not actually imported from ready-made west-European bandit models. The reason behind the cosmetic treatment of robbers and highwaymen that the Romanian elites perform in their writings, is the same as that of their western counterparts: noble bandits are easily integrated in the emerging nation-state narrative of the era and are useful as precursors of the political claims of the elite.

Between the Restorative Nostalgia and the Museum of the Ghosts of Utopia: Nostalgic Practices in Post-Soviet Cultural Landscape

Abstract: After the collapse of the Soviet Union, particularly during the hard transition of the 90s, the highly polarized Russian society revealed two main forms of remembering and coping with recent past. This past was either idealized as a time of imperial glory, national pride, and relative welfare, even if it also included periods of anomie (the late Stalin era) or stagnation (the Brejnev era), either treated as a period of significant traumas that necessitated persistent recognition and working through. As for the official memory regimes, if the first post-Soviet decade was dominated by the totalitarian anticommunist (and antinostalgic) paradigm, the 2000s brought a radical turn, with the rise of victimhood nationalism and “redemptive” authoritarianism of the Putin era. The new mnemonic regime is shaped by an official, “patriotic” restorative nostalgia that is also placed in the centre of the presidential cultural programe designed to legitimize the authoritarian system and to support the restoration of a great, mythical Russia. Against this background, new forms of counter-memory and counter-nostalgia began to manifest within both the social and cultural field. One of the most remarkable exemples is offered within the “new realities” created by the young photographer Danila Tkachenko, who’s compositions marked by a “second-hand nostalgia” challenge both the Soviet utopia and its official nostalgic-populist recostructions. By means of a special nostalgic technique based on reframing the remnants and the “trukhliashechkas” of the Soviet past – (re)interpreted as the symbols of “the perfect technocratic future that never came” –, the young artist also deconstruct the imagined “sovietness” embedded in the cultural-political products shaped by the statist patriotic nostalgia. His representations of the post-Soviet landscape are those of “a ghost of utopia”, a land of ruins, of abandoned cities, of ecological disasters, and of millions unburied deads of the GULAG.

Keywords: post-Soviet nostalgia, utopia, anti-utopia, postmemory, prosthetic memory.

A Research on Romanian Phytonims Created with the Latin Originated Term „Iarbă” (Herb) (I)

Abstract: Our paper aims to reveal an inventory, an interpretation and a statistical analysis of Romanian names of plants which implicates the term „iarbă” (herb, grass), spread through the botanical terminology, a phenomenon which, as considered by E. Coşeriu is not enough highlighted (given that the individual speaker became creator of language / poetry whenever he named a flower. Botanical popular terminology has primarily a practical value, designating, distinguishing and categorizing elements of the plant kingdom within the given natural reign, but also has a high theoretical significance, especially for linguists, both by the ethimons to which they send back and by the metaphorical meanings the phytonims mostly have.

Why don’t we have an alternative to male authenticity? Focus: In a Young Ladies’s Home by Anișoara Odeanu and Youth by Lucia Demetrius

Abstract: On the background of recent syntheses on the concept of authenticity in Romanian literature and in the light of gender studies in relation to the postcanonical perspective, this paper aims to question a possible alternative of authenticity in two interwar novels written by women: Anișoara Odeanu’s 1934 Într-un cămin de domnișoare [In a Young Ladies’ Home] and Lucia Demetrius’ 1936 Tinerețe [Youth]. While interwar literature outlines a masculine, misogynist and machismo authenticity, based on vitalism and obsession with the experience of the male subject, the alternative of prose written by women proposes an authenticity that is neither doctrinaire nor merely a form. While not configured as an alternative to the ism of male writing’s authenticity, the two novels propose a demonopolisation of authenticity and underline the signs of a counter discourse of women writings within and against a misogynistic society and culture.

Proto-Hypertextual Narratives in Romanian Literature: Tudor Arghezi, “Tablets from Kuty Country” (I)

Abstract: This two-part study explores the (proto-)hypertextual dynamics in Tablete din Țara de Kuty [Tablets from Kuty Country], an “unusual” narrative published in 1933 by Romanian author Tudor Arghezi. Starting from the Dadaist concept of “indetermination” and searching the roots of the more contemporary narrative “interactivity” in the process, my research delves into the reasons why Tablete din Țara de Kuty can be classified as a proto-hypertext. This first part analyses the Romanian reception of the volume and draws comparisons with a much-debated novel that has also been discussed as a precursor to digital fictions, Julio Cortázar’s Hopscotch, investigation the structures, introductions, and approaches brought forward by both authors.

Code-switching in Literatures Written in Peripheral Languages: Multilingualism and Discursive Strategies in the Nineteenth-Century Romanian Novel

Abstract: My study aims to address the phenomenon of literary multilingualism in the nineteenth-century Romanian novel. Based on Johan Heilbron’s approach on “translations as a cultural world-system” and his classification into hyper-central, central, semi-peripheral and peripheral languages, my analysis discusses the nineteenth-century Romanian language at an early stage of its consolidation and thus in self-colonial and anti-colonial relations to the “hegemony” of the French language. Taking advantage of this framework, I consider that the majority of literary code-switching examples faithfully render these linguistic relations, so my study proposes a classification of literary multilingualism into the following possible categories: a livresque multilingualism, which satisfies the self-colonial tendencies of the nineteenth-century language, a latent multilingualism, which can also be associated with an attempt at linguistic bovarisation, but also with the search for authenticity in novels through suggestion and “explicit attribution” (Meir Sternberg), a thesistic multilingualism, in such cases where the novel didactically presents foreign language insertions, and a functional multilingualism. Finally, my paper also launches a discussion of another type of multilingualism, that as a source for “defamiliarization”, which I expect to find in the Romanian novel of the twentieth century, when the Romanian language is no longer in danger of self-colonization and passes by the incipient stage, the phenomenon of code-switching serving Viktor Shklovsky’s technique of “defamiliarization”.

Keywords: code-switching in literature, literary multilingualism, Romanian language as peripheral language, nineteenth-century Romanian novel, typology of multilingualism.

The Posthuman as World Literature: The Case of Interwar Romanian Science Fiction

Abstract: This study deals with three science fiction novels published in the Romanian interwar period, using concepts and theories from the field of posthumanism. My approach will consist of three interconnected but equally important steps. In the first place, these novels are part of a larger cluster of 20th-century art that thematizes technological development and the ‘crisis’ of modern man. Their importance also arises from the need to expand our understanding of world literature beyond the phenomenon of translation and the national canon. In addition, I will examine how posthuman configurations activate different reactions to the dominant ideologies of the age (modern machinism, feminism, species expansion, etc.). A second step will entail reconstructing the scientific, ideological, social and artistic contexts that made the articulation of the three novels. Last but not least, in the background of my study, I will lead a demonstration of the incompatibility between posthumanist ideology and the interwar science fiction novel, which rather features a posthuman imaginary without posthumanism. This result invalidates Simona Micali’s thesis that considers any SF product as a critique of anthropocentrism.

Multiple Subgenre Belonging: A Proposal for the History of Novel Forms

Abstract: This article proposes the acceptance of the existence of multiple subgenres in the taxonomy of novels. It explains how an “evolutionary” perspective on the novel can help us understand how genres and subgenres are never “pure” or “unique” and that one has to engage the plurality of subgenres through which one novel can be classified in order to understand the evolution of literary forms.

Keywords: evolutionary theory, literary theory, genre theory, history of the novel.

The Novel as a Barometer of the Maturity Level of a Literature: The Great Themes of the Battle for the Novel

Abstract: The article below is conceived as a return to the theoretical debates around the novelistic genre, debates that will allow us to see: which were the main themes that animated the main critical figures of the interwar period, what arguments these critics used in their theoretical constructions and especially how was the novel instrumented in their polemics.  We organised our discussion around main themes such as: the crisis of the novel, the limits of the novel, the theory of complexes, themes that illustrate what Romanian literary critics Aurel Sasu and Mariana Vartic called the ”battle for the novel”. Presenting them will help us understand which were the real purposes of these debates in which the novel became – not once – either an instrument in articulating some cultural modern(ist) projects, in legitimizing some literary groups or in fulfilling important cultural objectives that expressed the ambitions (and anxieties) of Romanian literature as a phenomenon, a literature that, in the interwar period, reached its maturity.

Keywords: novel theory, modern cultural projects, crisis of the novel, limits of the novel, theory of complexes.

An Epistolary Bildungsroman

Abstract: The present article focuses on one of the most interesting Romanian literary epistolary, An Epistolary Novel, by I. Negoițescu and Radu Stanca, both members of Literary Circle of Sibiu. The re-editing of the correspondence of the two writers completes, where possible, the collection of letters, but also passages censored in the first edition. It also offers an interesting research core for Romanian literary studies from the perspective of so-called memory studies and life writing. The epistolary „novel” is, in fact, a „bildungsroman,” as Negoițescu characterized it, and also a fresco of the Romanian literary life from 1943 until 1961, with the related cancans, with the little mischief and chicanery, with the obstacles to be overcome in the editorial and the artistic world.

Four Cases of Violence against Writers: Salman Rushdie, Ashraf Fayadh, Meral Șimșek, and Nedim Türfent – Languages of Truth

Abstract: The article examines some cases of violence against writers in Turkey, in Saudi Arabia, and in the United States. Using as starting point Salman Rushdie’s essays from Languages of Truth, as well as his atrocious experience of the attack against him in August 2022, the article moves on to examine the examples of other writers abused not by attackers, but by governments, whose violence is more often than that of the isolated agressors. The article also documents the instrumental assistance offered to these abused writers by PEN International and its branches.

Abstract: This paper aims to demonstrate that two previously unknown manuscript folios from Mircea Eliade’s youth, which emerged in 2022, are the drafted summaries of his unfinished editorial project Valkyries in the Library. The two folios are, in fact, two lists of article titles Eliade published in Cuvântul (22), Gândirea (2), and Sinteza (1), in 1926-1928. Arranged differently, the feuilletons address topics such the Romanian intellectual, the dependance towards French culture and literature, philology and synthesis, the lack of heroism in Romanian literature, Beatrice and Don Quixote, young writers, literary criticism, philosophy. The tone is polemical and radical, condemning the current state of Romanian literature, advancing the author’s views, and urging his contemporaries to take action in order to create fundamental and authentic works. Just as Eliade recalls in his diary, the articles from Cuvântul mentioned in the two folios were a whirlwind, a cavalcade meant to take local culture and erudition by surprise and to change it forever.

Exploring the Diference in S’adapter by Clara Dupont-Monod

Abstract: The article focuses on the literary treatment of “difference” in the novel of the contemporary French author Clara Dupont-Monod, S’adapter (2021), by taking into account different levels such as the thematic, narrative, intertextual ones; the issue of personal identity is also explored in close relationship with the metaphor of “reclusion”. The study also observes various mechanisms of rendering this difference in order to explore how literature assumes the role of “repairing the world” by building authentic connections.

Abstract: In the context of naturalist transfers, we propose to reflect on the way in which the translation of Zola’s works has acted on the translator-writer who, by appropriating the translated text, pursues the reception of Zola’s work in the work that he himself will later sign as author. More precisely, we start from the analysis of the bibliography of one of the first translators of Zola in Portugal, Eduardo de Barros Lobo, to place the literary translation in a vast process of reception and metamorphosis of the naturalist text. We conclude that the work of Eduardo de Barros Lobo echoes the diversity of naturalist literature and the coexistence of several literary canons in the context of the globalization of naturalism.

Abstract: The present article aims to analyze the process of recovering marine imagery in some contemporary Romanian fictional works. The study will proceed with our study from two distinct perspectives: from the point of view of a narrator who gained experience on board ships and from the point of view of an imaginary narrator-traveler. For the case studies, a few postmodern fictions have been considered. The limits between reality and fiction are to identify the literary exotism of those texts, concluding that the idea of “recycling” the marine themes in the present Romanian literary space contributes to the detachment of those works from the body of nautical fiction which many literary critics considered as minor literature.

Keywords: marine imagery, sea voyage, travel, logbook, nautical fiction.

Abstract: The present study undertakes an analysis of the dichotomy mind over matter, culture and civilization, a plea for art – with special focus on literature – and raising awareness of the increasing role of humanities and the liberal arts in a society driven and increasingly dominated by scientific advancement and aiming towards solely technological purposes. The paper stems from previous research interest in the field of cultural studies and relies on recent scholarly studies raising awareness about a revival of the word and language akin to the call “make it new” and calling attention to the impact of the image versus the power of the word highly valued by literature.

Abstract: This paper is an analysis of Jack Kerouac’s 1954-letter to Robert Lax and it emphasizes that the American author’s (temporary) conversion to Buddhism was not a mere reaction against his Christian belief and tradition, but the result of a natural, informed realization of the possibility to accept, to celebrate distinction, to bridge the differences through compassion. The analysis partly mirrors Jack Kerouac’s own etymological method and highlights the differences between his own and the traditional interpretation of the terms karuna and agape. The conclusion is that, even though Kerouac’s understanding of certain religious concepts might sound subjective, it provides the reader with a valuable perspective on the two spiritual traditions which enabled the American author to naturally turn to Buddhism, albeit temporarily; it also facilitates the analysis of his writing.
