Abstract:The aim of this article is to respond to two main questions: is there a link between the major trends within Global IR and the developments of the disciplines of IR on the national and regional levels (in Eastern Europe), and how these major trends are influencing the International Studies in Russia. In this regard, the present case study is a specific one because it clearly shows the post-Soviet evolutions of social sciences, the interconnecting trends within Global IR and the development of national IR, and the identity dilemmas of post-Soviet Russia. From this point onwards, I discuss the leading directions of the past decade’s debates within the Russian academic space regarding the Russian International Studies and the project of the Russian School of IR. The current developments suggest that the maturing Russian discipline of IR and the project of the Russian School of IR are still at the stage of epistemic search.

Keywords: Global IR, great debates, International Studies, Russian International Studies, post-Soviet Russia, Russian Theory of International Relations.

Abstract: The paper elaborates on feminine images of the sacred. It aims to show the manner in which feminine specificities are connected to the realm of the sacred within the Eastern Christianity, the ancient Greek religion and in some forms of Hinduism. The emphasis will be placed on the commonalities, as well as the contextual dissimilarities between the different cultural and religious spaces under consideration. The aim of the present paper is to elicit a better understanding of the feminine, along with its creative manifestations, and of the unparalleled complexity of the sacred, as well.

Keywords: the sacred, the feminine, motherhood, maidenhood, Estern Christian saints, ancient Greek religion, Hinduism, Hindu religions, Shaktism, Kali.

The Graduates: The American Model and the Romanian Poets of the 80’s

Abstract: The current study is both an inventory and an interrogation: on the one hand, it makes an inventory of the dynamics of affinities that the poets of the Monday Literary Circle (and, by extension, of the 1980s’ generation) felt for the American literary model; on the other hand, it questions the genuine nature of this relationship, that is often inflated in recollection. Are Cărtărescu, Coșovei, Iaru, Bucur and the others just mere local Beatniks, as they have been accused (and were never prompt in refuting)? How do they themselves define this relationship? A possible answer might be found at the end of the analysis, where I introduce a (never before published) document: Traian T. Coșovei’s Bachelor thesis.

Keywords: Beat Generation, Monday Literary Circle, 80s poetry, poetic influence, Eugen Barbu, Nicolae Manolescu, Mircea Cărtărescu, Alexandru Mușina, Romulus Bucur, Traian T. Coșovei.

The Women Novelists: Translations of Novels Written By Women in Romanian Culture (1841-1918)

Abstract: This article uses the data from the Chronological Dictionary of Novels Translated in Romania from its Origins to 1989 in order to chart the presence of foreign women novelists and their works in Romanian translation between 1841 (the year of the first translation of a novel originally written by a woman author, Sophie Cottin) and 1918 (the year marking the end of the long nineteenth century and the unification of Romanian provinces). The study separates two main periods, starting from the domination of the French novel: 1841-1890 and 1890-1918. The former period comprises more French novel translations, from authors such as Sophie Cottin, Stephanie-Felicité Genlis, George Sand, Countess Dash, M-me Charles Reybaud, and Mie D’Aghonne. The latter comprises Italian and American authors, such as Carolina Invernizio, Matilde Serao, Anna Katherine Green, Frances Elisa Hodgen Burnett, and even northern authors such as Clara Tschudi.

Keywords: women writers, novel translation, Romanian literature, feminism, world literature.

Eight Lesser-known Translations by Mircea Eliade from Aldo Mieli, Raffaele Pettazzoni and Sylvain Lévi

Abstract: This paper aims to analyze the way in which Mircea Eliade became, in 1926, a vector of the cultural and scientific transfer between Western Europe and Romania, through his translations of eight fragments from Aldo Mieli, Raffaele Pettazzoni and Sylvain Lévi’s major works. Two out of these eight translations seem to have been ignored to this day by researchers, whilst the others have only been mentioned in passing. The choices made by Eliade, the context in which these translations were published (the journal Orizontul/The Horizon and its public, the precarious state of the history of religions at that time in Romania etc.) and their echoes in Eliade’s works prove that they can be seen as an example of cultural transfer. They also play an important part in the foundation of the history of religions as a discipline in Romania, being, in a way, the textual equivalents of Eliade’s institutional aspiration to found an association and a library for the study of religions, as expressed in his letters to Raffaele Pettazzoni.

Keywords: Mircea Eliade, Aldo Mieli, Raffaele Pettazzoni, Sylvain Lévi, translation, cultural transfer, history of science, history of religions.

Representations of Psychological Deviance in Hortensia Papadat-Bengescu’s A Concert of Music by Bach

Abstract: Drawing partially on Ovid S. Crohmălniceanu’s suggestion that the interwar Romanian novel depicts mental illness, this paper aims to analyze the representations of such psychological ailments in Hortensia Papadat-Bengescu’s A Concert of Music by Bach. However, the thesis that I put forward is that the novel is more than a mere inventory of disabled characters, as this difference is charged with ideological meaning, which is revealed when the reader takes into account the metaphors of disability that abound in the novel. In several cases, the character’s difference is doubled by a theriomorphic figure, associating thus mental illness with monstrosity, animality, savagery, and angelism. As a result, the aforementioned characters are represented as alterity, as humas that have lost their human characteristics.

Keywords: theriomorphism; interwar Romanian novel, representation of mental illness, psychological deviance, character.

Dostoevsky and the Gulag Literature

Abstract: This paper aims to describe and analyze the references and allusions made by the authors who write about the Soviet Gulag to Dostoevsky and to his text written after his imprisonment in the tsarist prison in Omsk, The House of the Dead (1860- 1862). Starting from the premise that The House of the Dead has a special status as it is a text that makes the transition from the classical and vaguely defined genre of prison literature (i.e. literature written in prison or related – however not always explicitly – to the prison experience) to that of testimonial literature (i.e. literature related to a traumatic experience of a collective nature that is able to testify on behalf of those who remain to suffer in prisons or concentration camps), I will emphasize the testimonial character of Dostoevsky’s writing. Subsequently, I will analyze how the authors who write about their experiences in the Soviet camps (Gustaw Herling-Grudziński, A World Apart, Julius Margolin, Journey into the Land of Zeks and Back, Varlam Shalamov, Kolyma Tales, Yevgenia Ginzburg, Journey into the Whirlwind, Within the Whirlwind, and Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, The Gulag Archipelago) relate to Dostoevsky’s text. At first, the references to Dostoevsky highlight the continuity between the two repressive systems: the tsarist katorga and the Soviet Gulag (Gustaw Herling-Grudziński). Later, however, the differences between them become apparent, as the Gulag writers all highlight in their writing the extent and intensity of the suffering experienced by those who lived through the hell of the repressions in the Gulag. In this way, they enter in an ironic and polemical dialogue with the nineteenth-century Russian writer. In the end, this polemical separation from Dostoevsky shows how the Gulag writers abandon the messianic and humanistic innocence of the nineteenth-century prison literature in the context of the totalitarian and repressive system of the twentieth century.

Keywords: Dostoevsky, prison literature, testimonial literature, memoirs, Soviet camps, katorga.

Vasile Aaron – Reporta din vis, a Literary Novelty of Those Times

Abstract: Vasile Aaron (1780-1821) had an important contribution to the modernization of the Romanian literature. He was also the representative of the Transylvanian Enlightenment School. One of his works which is worth mentioning is Reporta din vis (Reporta in his dream), a meditation upon the ephemeral human life. Here, the author brought in elements of novelty such as the “dream-in-a-dream” images, the pre-Romantic motif of the ruins or the first fantastic descriptions in the Romanian poetical works. All Aaron´s literary and social activity reflected the specific features of his age. The complete studies written by Liliana Popa and Nicolae Popa shed light upon Aaron’s life and work and they showed the real dimensions of his personality.

Abstract: In this article, it is intended to reflect about the concept of celebrity, mainly in the end of the XIX century, departing from Émile Zola. In this context, the main goals are both the understanding of the construction of the concept “celebrity”, and how and if it may fit to a literary figure as Zola as a public person, based on the analysis of a specific medium, the letter, as a means of communication situated between the public and private spheres. We propose to analyse a corpus of letters, available on the Eman platform, sent from the Ibero-American area to Zola at the end of the 19th century. This corpus does not constitute a uniform object of analysis, given the diversity of letter writers who take the liberty of writing to Zola during this period when the novelist and his work are already well known and had been the target of numerous polemics on art and literature in the decade preceding the writing of these texts. From a theoretical point of view, we place ourselves in the perspective of studies concerning the history and culture of celebrity, as well as studies concerning comparative literature. In the light of these achievements, we will seek to study this corpus as an expression of an audience that reflects the image of Zola as a public figure and, at the same time, achieves a literary and cultural self-reflection. The methodologies used will be a qualitative analysis applied to the content of the letters, in order to show that, although correspondence have traditionally been allocated a secondary status, in fact the correspondence method, as a primary data-gathering technique, may present unique advantages circumventing the embarrassment that participants may face otherwise.

Abstract:Born in 1975, the Norwegian Maja Lunde, widely known as a gifted children’s writer, surprised the literary world by her first novel, The History of Bees (2015), an ambitious dystopian book meant to put into question some of the greatest challenges our contemporary world has to face: the climatic changes and the threatening idea of a future and hypothetic disappearance of bees. Even if some critics considered her writing dangerously close to non-fiction or an expression of the so called “cli-fi” (“climate fiction”), Lunde proves to be a convincing author, perfectly capable of expressing deep fears of our contemporary Western society, but also able to offer her readers a symbolic solution to many of the major problems of the present. These preoccupations are also to be found in her second novel, The End of the Ocean (2017), where Maja Lunde perfectly succeeds in dealing with some another stringent nowadays issues, namely desertification and water shortages.

Keywords: apocalyptic narrative, dystopian literature, contemporary novel, cli-fi fiction, symbolic structure.

Abstract: The present reflection proposes a novel investigation method in humanities, consisting in the analysis of local phenomena as originating in the dynamic of cultural `deep structures`. My focus falls on the death of the author which I consider to be a topos and a myth of last century’s humanities. The death of the author is associated with the Hegelian eschatological philosophy of history, but may also be deciphered as a consequence of the acute manifestation, within an entire culture, of the Kantian antinomy regarding the necessary existence of a transcendent being. As transcendent to the work, the author is refuted – because, as Hugo Friedrich shows, the modern artistic conscience intuited the empty ideality of traditional metaphysical notions –. Thus, the death of the author must be inquired upon not only as a particular phenomenon within the evolution of art, but also as a symptom of certain transformations that precede the aesthetical domain, transformations that are characteristic to the late Modernity and integrant of a `multispectral` analysis (with scopes in metaphysics, archetype and myth analysis). Such a methodological exigence is based on the assumption that a cultural phenomenon ought to be integrated within the scientific paradigm it expresses and also within the ontological and cosmological models around which it is articulated. An approach such as this shall reveal that the death of the author represents and intellectual version of the death of God, further assimilated to a cultural archetype, that of the death of Meaning. Consequently, the postmodern deicide represents the imposal of negation as a form of thought, a Western thought headed, with the end of Modernity, against the metaphysical tradition (of Presence) that it stems from. I assume that the self-destruction of Western tradition is symptom of a profound crisis of identity and I interpret it as a symbolic violence meant to redeem the fault of 20th Century’s atrocities, by cleansing the guilt the Western man experiences. My approach to the analysis of myth engages the actual debate regarding the canonical fights of the last few decades while trying to shed light on the way in which the symbolic deicide of the (`secularized`) author and auctor aims at imposing a new author and a new auctor to the symbolic products of culture. Ideology is the new auctorial authority.

Keywords: autorship, the death of the autor, postmodernism, the dead of God, ideology, archetypology, scientific paradigm, (anti-) logocentrism, destruction of metaphysics, symbolic violence.
