Fences : A Technical And Analytical Perspective On Blues

The author seek with this paper to bring clarity in Troy Maxson’s favorite song throughout the whole play. What at a first glance would seem perhaps easy, proofs in fact to embody a wide connotative meaning. The complexity of the Old Blue song will be brutally decomposed into pieces and analyzed as an allegory, as a piece of music and as a comparison to Willie Nelson Ol’ Blues song “Hear it ring!”

Liviu Simeon Florean, A Life Dedicated to Art

In the contemporary art, on the backdrop of seemingly contradictory fragments of the post-war, tumultuous and expansive, modern and post-modern period, artist Liviu S. Florean develops the path of creation towards perfection, summing up various inter and multicultural phenomena and manifestations.
His artistic destiny was exemplary, for his colleagues, and the national artistic life. An inner drama turned over artists of the new regime, raved from financial perspective, responding mimetically to this change, having a duplicitous, conspiratorial and guilty behavior.
Enthusiastic characters, full of aspirations, they abandoned their spiritual skills throughout their artistic journey, conveying a proletarian artistic message.
The artist’s experience is the cornerstone of the transition from socialist realism to an art with deep roots in national tradition, folk art, and with historical themes emerging from our past.
Coordinator of many monumental works of art and despite the restricting themes imposed by commissioners, he finds solutions based on intelligence and intuition.
The interwar Romanian art is marked by influences of cubism and modernism. In the tumult of life, with social tensions suppressing the cultural phenomenon, it was an opportunity to appropriate or recall some reference events of the history of painting, of its most controversial period.

Keywords: art, culture, socialist realism, proletarianism, modernism.

Current Grammatical Research. Controversial Aspects

The Romanian language is a form of displaying the national consciousness and our responsibility as well as the next generations’ responsibility is to reach our ancestors’ standards that have preserved its unity and have made out of it a modern communication instrument, with scientific and aesthetic availabilities at the highest standards. The elements of the morphosyntactical structure represent an essential part for achieving some competences that the language speakers should have and also the renewal of the normative studies; that is to say, the new developing phase of the Romanian literary language is, without doubt, the most important event.
The present study emphasizes some aspects of the current grammatical research.

Linguistic Proceedings For The Softening Of The Face Threatening Acts

The act of speech is based on the linguistic rules whose purpose is to maintain the harmony in the interpersonal relation. So, the strategies are connected to politeness – a phenomenon meant to establish the balance between the people who take part in the dialogue. The purpose of this article is to identify the verbal procedures which are typical of the negative side of politeness and they soften the aggresive expression of a face threatening act for the collocutor (criticism, rejecting, reproach, sarcasm, request, excuse, etc.). For a better illustration of our analysis, we shall use examples from Jean de La Fontaine’s Fables, because there is a variety of acts of speech in the character’dialogues.

Linguistic Treasure And Cultural Identity In Slănic Prahova

The article approaches the origins of local culture in the area of Slănic Prahova, as a double identity space. Based on an ethnological case study conducted in this area since 2014, the article highlights the landmarks that render the originality of the preserving area of traditions and customs, namely rural and urban. The local culture in the Slănic Prahova area has been manifested since the establishment of the city, outlining a rare social space that includes two types of structures: on the one hand there is a rural environment, known by the authentic preservation of the customs and traditions of this area, on the other hand, an urban structure outlined by urban settlements (blocks, cultural institutions, commercial companies.). The article also focuses on the importance of the linguistic elements present in the folkloric creations and their preservation over time.

The White Delirium: From Sources to Estuasies

Drugs, this big scourge of the world today. But how did they spread in Europe and in the world? How did it go from opium medication, to drug opium, a generator of illusions and fantasies? Have economic doctrines played a role in this mutation? It’s interesting to pick up a little corner of the curtain of this show …

Spiritual life in the vision of a Syriac mystic: Rabban Joseph Hazzaya

The author of this study starts from the recent translation into Romanian of the spiritual writings of an author from the 18th century, Joseph Hazzaya (“The Visionary”), to make a few considerations on the Christian ascetic-mystical experience in general and on the Syriac in particular. Thus, ascetic themes such as obedience, “the gift of tears”, the real experience of grace, as well as symbols such as “formless light”, fire or light, are briefly analyzed. Then the three poles of the ecclesial-theological power are presented: school theology, sacramental-hierarchical authority, and spiritual paternity, which can be both complementary but also antagonistic (as in Hazzaya’s case). Finally, the latest considerations concern the actuality and the importance of the writings mentioned in the Romanian monastic and theological context.

Saint Nicholas Church of Turnişor. Unwonted pages of the Parochial Chronicle

The Church of Turnişor is one of the oldest Orthodox churches in Sibiu today, and although its history is not as long or rich as that of the churches situated in the historical center of the medieval town, a series of details about the current life of the Romanians in the old village of Turnişor is reflected in a parochial chronicle written over a century by the priests who served in this church and within this community. The information illustrates the social and demographic evolution of the community as well as the challenges faced by priests in their mission. In their capacity as subjective testimonies, the information provided must also be confronted with other sources, but this does not detract from their importance or the credibility of the authors who have taken due account of what appeared to them relevant.

Joachim Wittstock. In the Quest for the Lost Shadow

The present study is dedicated to Joachim Wittstock, one of the most significant Saxon writersin contemporary Transylvania. With the occasion of Wittstock’s 80th anniversary, the author re-reads his literature and focuses mainly on the adaptation undertaken by Wittstock of Adalbert von Chamisso’s influential story of Peter Schlemihl – rewritten by the Transylvanian writer under the form of The Strange Story of Peter Gottlieb. In this piece, Wittstock adapts the narrative of the German Romantic (and its simili-Faustian pact with the devil) to the situation of the German writers in communist Romania – and the various pacts (political, social, existential) involved by their lives in these totalitarian conditions.

Keywords: contemporary Romanian literature, German writers in contemporary Romania, Joachim Wittstock, Adalbert von Chamisso, Peter Schlemihl, Peter Gottlieb Faustian pact, writers under the Romanian communist regime.

Myth and fragments of reality. The story “Forstbetrieb Feltrinelli” [The Feltrinelli Forestry] by Joachim Wittstock

This article focuses on the story “Forstbetrieb Feltrinelli” by Joachim Wittstock, published at the end of 2018 at the hora publishing house in Sibiu. Although the story is located in Transylvania – by using geographic topographies, thus giving the character of authenticity – in addition to Transylvanian configurations and motifs, some Italians are taken over in the narrative texture. The scale of remembrance of the events spans a century (from 1916 until 2016 and 2017), with a fragmented chronology, which interveawe time and multiple narrative perspectives. Joachim Wittstock’s prose is an elaborately created construct, a literary staged transgression in several aspects: geographic and literary topography; factual, fictional and mythical; the overlapping of the narrative perspective – omniscient, subjective and the author himself with metatextual explanations ; -( auto) biographical and historical. It is important to note the mythical plan of this, consisting of a mythicization of reality, the boundaries between the real and the myth being fluent, the two plans intertwine. But the satisfaction of the researcher is provided by the consummate art of the narrative, the creation of a spatiotemporal topos located at the confluence of memory and imagination, the present and the recalled realities, but also by the complex, often ambiguous texture of a great depth of narrative, which requires the reader to linger over them, to decipher its meaning.

Keywords: Joachim Wittstock, geographic and literary topography, literary staged transgression, spatiotemporal topos, Transylvanian motifs, narrative texture.

Configurations of Transnationalism in East-Central European Avant-Gardes

Following the developments in the field of transnational studies and World Literature, the present study addresses the idea that, rather than comparing the different materializations of East-Central European literature with Western literature in a way that enforces an inherent power structure between the two elements, one should turn his attention to the neighboring literatures of the former and set aside the dominant discourse related to the latter. The historical avant-garde represents an important case in this respect. The presence of Jewish writers, the existence of several catalyzing cultural centers (France, Germany), and the occurrences of spatial displacements of authors from within these avant-gardes, as well as ideological affinities are factors that have consolidated a form of interliterary communication between the East-Central European avant-gardes that could provide a very strong case study in regard to early transnational dialogues between marginal national literatures. Drawing from what Tötösy de Zepetnek called “inbetween peripherality” and the most recent discussions revolving around the inherent internationality of the avant-garde movements, my paper seeks to adapt recent theories to the aforementioned geoliterary space and motivate why the avant-gardes belonging to this space are critical to the explanation of early transnational communications in the modern European culture.

Novels as big data: A genre-centric approach to the Romanian novel (1900-1940)

My paper aims to present the premises, objectives and both methodological and theoretical framework of my doctoral research. The main ambition of my thesis is to investigate the evolutionary process of the Romanian novel published between 1900 and 1940 from a transnational, quantitative approach. My paper shall focus on the circulation of literary ideas and narrative formulas in the Romanian literary space, as well as on the literary and cultural import and the contribution of western literature to the modernization process of the autochthonous novel. By means of computational analysis, macroanalysis (Jockers), and quantitative research models (Moretti) the aim of my research is to generate a series of data, visual representations, and statistics in order to provide a factual accurate image of the evolution of the Romanian novel, exposing, at the same time, the fair amount of thematic and formal elements that have been imported by the Romanian writers in their works. The quantitative analysis will engage the following aspects: genre, theme, narrative formula, style, lexical elements and geographical distribution, while the primary sources will be constituted by both data bases such as chronological dictionaries and indexes, and novels.

What is Digital Humanities and What’s It Doing in Romanian Departments?1

This paper attempts to discuss the emergence of Digital Humanities in the Romanian academic milieu, as well as raise some questions regarding its applicability, both within Romanian research, as well as internationally. The paper then presents a series of possible models for the implementation of digital methods in Romanian philological research, taking into consideration both the technological infrastructure required to sustain this research, as well as a shift in research policies. Furthermore, the paper outlines two possible scenarios, one in which the researcher is not granted access to the digitized corpus he attempts to study and the second, in which he has full access to the metadata by using Python in a browser-hosted Jupyter Notebook. Both these scenarios yield significant results, as the paper shows, but, most important of all, they illustrate the possibility of conducting digital research despite the lack of digital infrastructure, of interinstitutional collaboration and of advanced technical skills.

The Literature About The Former Yugoslavia In The Paradigm Of World Literature

The present study seeks to present the manner in which the paradigm of world literature can be applied to the literature about the former Yugoslavia. My point of departure is represented by the assumption that – besides the methodological turns – the 1990s witnessed a series of geopolitical (the break-up of Yugoslavia) and literary changes (the emergence of literary texts that fictionally tackle the former country and that are published in a variety of geocultural areas). In such a context, this literature not only can, but has to be read using larger frames of reference. In this regard, my paper insists on three features that can be considered essential in the attempt to read this category of texts in the paradigm of world literature: transnationalism, the core-periphery matter, and the circulation of this literature in original and in translation. Although they are not the only ones, these features shed light on the structural similitaries between the method and its object of analysis.

Between the Freedom of the Imaginary and the Limitations of the Writer’s Self-Imposed Exile1

The present paper sets out to analyse the mental and emotional impact that exile has on writers – especially when this exile is self-imposed. In this case the destructive impact of exile is counterbalanced by the artistic freedom and the liberty of the imaginary which the author makes use of. Exile and the imaginary are therefore the major coordinates along which most postcolonial and postmodern literary texts are structured. Rootlessness, the feeling of not belonging, and even a certain type of ascetism of the postmodern individual are the ideological backbone of contemporary writing. We have thus attempted to show that the search for identity and the simultaneous existence in two binary opposite spaces are what give birth to exile literature.

Transparence – The poetic novel of a diamond-like mind

Concerning the writing craft of Radu Vancu, whether we may be speaking about his journalistic writing, or his very scholarly essay-writing, his confessional prose or, as is the case now, about his novel writing, possesses at least two fundamental traits: on one side, it is by inception poetic down to its most profound fibres, a feature which inevitably pervades any instance of discourse, even if at a textual surface, in case of journalistic attitude or critical essay, for example, predominant is a logical-inferential approach, as well as a style of pinpoint accuracy, conciseness and rigor. The other distinguishable trait is embodied by erudition and an indefatigable intellectual-epistemological propensity, which are infrastructure-building and paradigmatic dimensionsin Radu Vancu’s writing. In his novel Transparenta [Transparence], we have a prose of an unparalleled density of ideas , a writing that is not only polyphonic, but also a dazzling heteromorphous composition, a complex and provoking discourse sample, as can only be found in the great literature.

Counter-reformation and the Rosicrucian Enlightenment

The wake of the Thirty Years War is a period marked by the intellectual hope expressed by the Rosicrucian manifestos that a new era of knowledge would arise. What was to be seen as a failed Renaissance or an early Enlightenment is a period marked by the confluent ideas of alchemy, cabbala and other esoteric influences, mixing with the scientific quest for the functioning models of what is to be known. The brutal end put to this late Renaissance is related to the political and religious issues raised by the rivalry to the throne of Bohemia and the subsequent domination of the German Empire. In the aftermath of the great destruction, pure mathematical and physical science would dominate the European history, leaving behind the esoteric heritage of the Renaissance.

Graves With Military Equipment From The Second Horizon Of Alba Iulia-Stația De Salvare Necropolis (1979-1981)

This paper focuses on the graves belonging to the Magyar warriors that had been discovered within the Alba Iulia-Stația de Salvare necropolis in the period 1979-1981. The urbanistic activities carried out in the funerary area located on the northern part of the fortress consisted of digging the foundation of some apartment buildings. The team, composed of scholars from the National Museum of the Union (M. Blăjan, I. Șerban) and from the Institute of Archaeology and Art History, Cluj-Napoca (Ștefan Pascu), identified in the above mentioned area, alongside the numerous roman and medieval graves, a number of 13 Magyar warriors with their inventory (M. 36, M. 54, M. 298, M. 304, M. 322, M. 392, M. 417, M. 517, M. 537 b, M. 584, M. 630, M. 664 și M. 691). The graves’ description was made in accordance with the digging journals kept in the personal archive of fellow colleague Mihai Blăjan.
More than half of the graves (M. 36, M. 417, M. 304, M. 517, M. 537 b, M. 664 și M. 691) had the sepulchral pit covered and set up with lithic material, custom frequently observed in some cemeteries from Alba Iulia dated in the 10th-11th centuries (Izvorul Împăratului, Str. Brândușei). As regards the equine offering, composed of skull and partial limbs, it was identified in just one warrior grave (M. 630). The funeral inventory recovered was composed of everyday tools and objects (flint, lighter, fold used for sharpening, knives), jewelry (looped rings, rings, bracelets), weaponry (lyre-shaped buckle, quadrangle buckle, chain loops, quivers, arrows, battle axe) and ceramics. All the elements of rites and funeral ritual (the graves’ orientation and the arms’ position, the anatomic position of the ceramic pots laid as offering, the lack of bird/egg offering, the animal offering and its position) allow us to place these graves in the first half of the 10th century. These graves can be linked with the first Magyar warriors that infiltrated the Alba Iulia area during the first decades of the 10th century.
It is almost certain that these warriors were part of the military escort of duke Gyla/Gyula (probably the one that held the position of gyula), an important character of the Magyar staff from Pannonia that established himself in Transylvania and that identified with the autochthonous environment. Gyla rapidly became a dissident that founded a “voivodeship” in the area and reactivated the Christianity via a Byzantine influence. The idea that Hierotheus would have exercised his authority over the Magyars from Pannonia too is out of question, all the more since, particularly, the religious motif meant the beginning of Gyla’s dissidence (sic!). Thus, “Gyla’s voivodeship” or “Terra Gyla” represents the fourth independent political entity from the Romanian area (alongside those of Menumorut, Glad and Gelu) in which Roman, Slavic, Magyar and Byzantine elements co-exist.

Keywords: Alba Iulia, warriors, Transylvania, suite, offering, weaponry, Magyars, Gyla/Gyula.

On True Education

Wilhelm von Humboldt is often invoked as the father of the modern research university ideal, but it is not always very clear what precisely that ideal consisted of and what its philosophical underpinnings were at the time. In this essay I set out to prove that they were in fact more radical than it is usually assumed and to discuss their often hollow application in modern higher education systems.

Current Directions of Discourse Analysis in Education

This paper sets out to emphasize the relevance of Critical Discourse Analysis in the field of education, by tackling some classical, as well as, contemporary approaches, emerged in a period of paradigm shift from the classical classroom discourse to innovative teacher-student discourses and interdisciplinary, communicative attempts. This paper provides an overview of the role of the critical discourse analysis in education.

Educating For Empathy In Order To Promote The Well-Being Of Second-Generation Foreign Minors

This article provides a reflection on issues related to identity building by second-generation foreign minors in Italy, proposing an empathic approach as an education strategy for achieving a better standard of living. In fact, these minors, especially during adolescence, feel the great discomfort caused by dual cultural affiliation, which often subject them to the pressure of different incompatible and irreconcilable systems of values and beliefs. The use of the empathic approach to educational and training actions addressed to them represents therefore an educational strategy of particular importance because, on the one hand, it helps these children to open themselves to relationships with trust, on the other hand it encourages them to improve integration strategies to achieve real inclusion.
