Abstract: A young Romanian composer from the Austrian Bucovina, Ciprian Porumbescu (1853-1883) is an important figure of the local cultural mythology. This fact, we believe, is due to the association of his image with some ill-fated aspects of his life, such as an impossible love, his premature death, his exultant talent, maybe even his ardent patriotism. In my attempts at recovering the past cultural life of Bucovina, I discovered the journal of Ciprian Porumbescu (that probably includes a rich correspondence as well), written around 1878-1883. I am not talking about a journal on creation, nor about one related to political life. That, in spite of the fact that he was arrested for being the president of a student’s society that had a nationalist nature, yet he didn’t hesitate afterwards being one of the leaders of an international German society. Unfortunately, the above mentioned journal is absent from the public space and the history of its recovery and editing is in itself a history of a failure. That is why, this study is an analysis of the different existing editions of it – that could be described as fragmented, or improvised. In what regards the title of the article, it hints at the imprecisions in transcribing the original text, the difficulties posed by the German existing versions and also at the deficiency of the Romanian translations. Yet, besides all of these, the journal of Ciprian Porumbescu is an exceptional biographical document. Thus, the critique of the existing editions could represent a fist attempt at a textual and analytical recovery of the actual journal.

Abstract: Starting from JoséItzigsohn and Karida L. Brown’s 2020 book, The Sociology of W. E. B. Abstract: This article outlines W.E.B. Du Bois’s general sociological theory and literary activity in connection to the recent study of Jose Itzigsohn and Karida L. Brown, The Sociology of W.E.B. Du Bois. Racialized Modernity and the Global Color Line. It describes the role of Double Consciousness and Racialized Modernity within postcolonial and decolonial theory and explains how postcolonial Romanian studies have engaged with postcolonial theory by avoiding these concepts.

Abstract: In this essay I investigate the multiple and ambiguous ways in which the Romanian critic Eugen Lovinescu instrumentalized one hundred years ago the concept of „intellectualization” regarding the process of Romanian literature evolution towards modernity, a process associated with abandoning its rural roots in order to become thematically more urbane oriented. I also investigate the polemical echoes of Lovinescu’s action during the Interwar period and after, especially during the Communist era (1948-89), when his texts and thesis were largely deformed in order to both subvert and accommodate the Communist regime agenda towards peasant and rural literature.

Keywords: poetry, literature, intellectualism intellectualization, intellectual proletariat, capitalism, peasantry.

Abstract: Martial dedicated many epigrams to the four successive emperors of Rome with whom he had been contemporary: Titus, Domitian, Nerva and Trajan. In all the poet’s volumes, his epigrams were similar with respect of their underlying strategy even if they were praising a different sovereign. Each time the poet depicted the current emperor as a perfect ruler, endowed with the most noble virtues and in total contrast with the previous monarch who was loaded with vices. During the reign of Nerva, while recurring to his usual tactics of praising the current leader and attacking the previous one, Martial arrived in the position of posthumously denigrating Domitian whom he had adulated many years before.

Keywords: Martial, epigrams, Domitian, Nerva, encomiastic poems.

Abstract: An astonishing and furthermore anonymous report was preserved in the archives of the “Slovak branch” of the Erdődi family. Written in all likelihood in spring 1498, and – additionally – with direct focus on the policies of future cardinal Thomas Bakócz of Erdőd (Ardud), the extensive Latin document covered the recent talks and arrangements between Maximilian I of Habsburg, King of the Romans, and Stephen the Great, voivode of Moldavia. The document was eloquently entitled Modus conspirationis Romanorum regis Maximiliani cum Stephano, waywoda Moldavo, contra statum serenissimi principis domini Wladislai, Dei gratia regis Hungarie, Bohemie etc. et similiter contra statum serenissimi principis domini Alberti, Polonorum regis, primus initam cum prefata maiestate regis Hungarie et strictissimo iuramento firmatam perpetuam pacem et concordiam. The report provides a thorough overview of Maximilian’s (and Stephen’s) complex network of Hungarian supporters, as well as an insight into the most delicate matter of Habsburg-Ottoman agreements. The document substantiates Maximilian’s pompous claim of February 1498 (made in front of the Spanish ambassador at his court) that the Wallachian (Stephen of Moldavia) controlled half of Hungary, while the other half of the realm reverted to the King of the Romans, therefore prompting the profound reformation of Europe, much desired by the Habsburg monarch.

Keywords: Maximilian I of Habsburg, Stephen the Great of Moldavia, Thomas Bakócz of Erdőd (Ardud), Bayezid II, House of Jagiello, Europe, reformation, conspiracy.
