The Road to Autonomy Goes through Knowledge

Abstract: This paper it is a subjective perspective on the birth and the raise of the field of Gender Studies in Romania. It is subjective because the author is the initiator of the field and she has a parental/maternal attitude towards the topic. Once her intellectual maternity is related to the MA program at National School of Political and Administrative Studies in Bucharest, the text is offering a reflective image of the evolution and the results of the research in the last decades at NSPSPA, as well as its impact beyond the academic space.

Keywords: gender studies, feminism, feminist philosophy, feminist political theory, history of the feminist movement, gender and history, sociology of gender, gender politics.

Natalia Milița Geormăneanu: The Microhistory of an “Insubordinate” as an Enterprise in Gender Studies

Abstract: This study uses microhistory as a useful method for gender analysis of the past, with a focus on the life and activities of Milița Geormăneanu, an unknown and yet revealing personality from interwar Romania. As a volunteer in World War I and then activist in a number of areas after the war, Geormăneanu was one of thousands of citizens of Romania who sought to claim benefits and rights on the basis of the new veterans’ administration legislation and policies during the 1920s and 1930s. Her unsuccessful campaign reveals important realities about the thinking of Romanian policy makers with regard to gender norms and expectations.

Gender Equality. Public Policies or Political and Religious Discoursive Battlefield?

Abstract: Romania’s pre- and post-accession to the European Union revealed that gender equality had been considered a marginal domain of interest, with mandatory legislative and institutional changes that had to be put into practice given the acquis communautaire. The financial and economic crisis was an important setback, it deterred Romania from a progressive democratic road, and opened avenues for democratic backsliding. Important challenges were brought by the financial and economic crisis and later on by conservative political and civil society’s forces mobilizing against gender equality. During the last couple of years, we have also witnessed an intensification of mobilization against gender equality called anti-gender campaigns. The article is both descriptive and reflexive and analyzes the configuration of the anti-gender campaigns in Romania, identifies the themes that mobilized discourses and activities combating the so called `gender ideology` and identifies the main actors supporting these campaigns. The article highlights that the opposition against gender equality is not restricted to discourse or civic mobilization but has already entered the field of political representation.

Gender Studies: a Litmus for the Romanian Democracy

Abstract: This article argues that gender studies are a sensitive indicator for the quality of Romanian democracy. How gender studies have been established and (partly) institutionalized, the ideological and institutional obstacles that they have faced, as well as the political values and stakes that are present when they are promoted or contested are significant elements for understanding the process of democratization within the academic space, as well as the extent and quality of democracy in the country after 1989. In the first part, I analyze the dynamics of the establishment and institutionalization of gender studies in Romania, filling the gaps of current literature on the topic, especially when it comes to the more recent developments. This investigation allows the identification of relevant factors that are specific to the Romanian context and favoured or hindered the presence of these studies in local universities. In the second part, I analyze briefly the academic, ideological and political opposition to feminism, feminist studies and gender studies in Romania.

Queer or Activism in Thought

Abstract: As the concept of queer becomes more pervasive in the Romanian academic and activist spaces, the question concerning its conceptual content in relation to other critical notions from feminist and gender theories, as well as from critical thought in general, turns out to be quite central to the discussion. In this article, I propose a way of understanding this concept by employing the Deleuzian critical approach to philosophy and critical thought processes and formation as a starting point for elaborating future political and resistance strategies în progressive social movements.

Personal development and feminism: A sociological perspective on women’s rights movements in neoliberal Romania

Abstract: The article aims to analyze the ways in which personal development is used as a tool to manage social justice issues, domestic violence cases and other forms of structural inequality. In most works in the social sciences, self-help discourse has been criticized for reiterating the individualizing neoliberal discourse that leads to growing social inequalities, along with blaming the most vulnerable for their own fate. However, personal development as a practice has been used by organizations working at community level to address personal issues caused by social inequalities. The analysis aims to present the intertwining of global ideological and political plans at the individual level through non-governmental organizations, their projects and personal development courses. The research consisted in the analysis of the activities and projects of the organizations that are part of the Network for Preventing and Combating Violence against Women (VIF) and the ethnography data of personal development practices in Romania from a previous research.

Hashtag Feminism in Romania: #MeToo and Its Effects on Cyberspace Behavior

Abstract: In the recent years, cyberspace has become an incubator for feminist activism. Cyberfeminism has gained momentum through various online platforms, campaigns, movements, and galvanized women (and – to a certain extent – men) to “move beyond the hashtag” and engage in actions meant to drive socio-political change. The Women’s March on Washington in January 2016, for instance, was triggered by a Facebook post, and turned into an unprecedented women’s activism action, replicating across the globe. A more recent movement, #MeToo, has emerged into cyberspace and raised issues of credibility, as it tapped into a culture of gender inequality and power relations that created and fostered an environment of intimidation and silence. The unprecedented wave of sexual harassment allegations brought to surface countless confessions from regular women and celebrities who have been pivotal in raising awareness on this issue. However, this cyberfeminist movement also intensified the cyberbullying phenomenon, as the mechanisms of storytelling engaged in #MeToo have not only generated a wave of gendered solidarity, but also one of trivializing – even bashing – such stories, and the individuals who reported previous incidents on social media. This paper analyzes the emergence and development of the #MeToo movement in Romania in the fall of 2017, focusing on storytelling mechanisms employed on Facebook and effects on user behavior, an assessment of social media users’ navigation of the phenomenon, in terms of solidarity networks and bullying generated by Romanian women’s tackling of a cultural taboo.

The Construction of Romanian Feminism in the Early stage of Transition

Abstract: Within the feminist epistemological space, the category “Romanian feminism” contains a series of relevant features that individualize it to the point of its dissociation from Eastern European feminism. On the one hand, it is impossible to analyze Romanian intellectual feminism without an attempt to locate it within European feminism or, more particularly, within Eastern European feminism. On the other hand, any mapping of Romanian feminism is partial if it does not include the fundamental role of the institutional frameworks in which Romanian feminism was structured and where it was, in some cases, crystallized in  political agenda  or civic movement. The dynamics itself of the Romanian feminism goes beyond intellectual production, the creation of institutions and their acclimatization in a state that has started its transition to a democratic regime to a whole modus operandi of people who intellectually and professionally linked their destiny to feminism.

A Conversation Between Dual and Triple System Theories and Social Reproduction Theory

Abstract: This article attempts to understand if we can speak of a transition from Feminist Marxism to Feminist Materialism and Social Reproduction Theory, using a critical apparatus consisting of theorists such as Silvia Federici, Heidi Hartmann, as well as SRT feminists like Cinzia Arruzza, Tithi Bhattacharaya, Nancy Fraser, and Susan Ferguson. Starting from the proponents of the “Wages for Housework” campaign, I will make a short incursion into dual and triple system theory, to the unitary theory of Social Reproduction.

Being a Mother in a Mexican Prison

Abstract: This research represents a radiography of motherhood in the largest Women’s Prison in Mexico and Latin America – Saint Martha Social Rehabilitation Center for Women, located in Mexico City. In April 2020 there were detained 1247 women, 80% of them mothers. The focus of the study is on those female prisoners who became mothers during their detention period and chose to keep their babies with them inside the prison. Interviews have revealed that the average length of their sentence is approximately 27 years and, in many cases, the baby’s father is in prison as well. The study starts with analyzing the social costs of women’s incarceration and follows the respondents’ path, from the moment they find out that they are pregnant to day-to-day aspects of a mother’s and a child’s life in a prison and to the moment they are separated from their children. The reasons why couples decide to have a baby are taken into account, along with the living conditions, the baby’s nutrition, health care, early education and the way the mother expects her baby’s emotional development to be affected, by the fact that he/she had spent the first years of life in prison.

Aspects Related to the Research of Gender Stereotypes in Romanian Advertising

Abstract: The paper represents an analysis of gender studies regarding mass-media, mainly advertising. The study observes issues related to the way in which gender equality was identified in advertising, both in publications with individual authors and in collective specialised works, or in peer-reviewed scientific articles. We have subsequently observed and presented three essential  directions in Romanian studies on gender stereotypes / inequality in advertising. Thus, we discussed the linguistic and semantic direction (terms such as stereotype, male-female distinction, patriarchy), then the typological direction (classifications of stereotypes, their characteristic and frequency) and last but not least the direction of consumer perception in advertising. In conclusion, the paper shows the research trends in the field of gender stereotypes regarding advertising, highlighting the opinion of recognized specialists on the influence such representations have on individuals and in society.

Visual Humor through Internet Memes (II) From harmless humour to the discriminatory potential of (anti)memes. Case Study: “The Transgender Bathroom Debate”

Abstract: After pointing out – in the first part of this study – the persuasive quality of memes, once they are created, re-mixed and shared publicly, we attempt to further analyze and discuss the social and ethical implications of this type of humour, meant for mainstream entertainment and specific to the digital era, while insisting on the relevance of its reception; when the derision hides, in fact, hostility, the use of humour can affect the image of vulnerable groups and can contribute to the exclusion of their members. The attached case study presents and analyses anti-trans memes created and shared during a notorious legislative episode in the United States, referring to the use of gender-inclusive public restrooms. This episode has provoked controversies in the American public space and has served as a new reason for discriminatory manifestations online, using internet memes.

Matriphilia – Writing as an Affective Language

Abstract: This study aims to depict women’s authorship and their contribution to literature, while taking into consideration the genesis of female identity at the intersection between motherhood and feminism. I intend to do a neo-feminist exploration of the collective volume “Povești cu scriitoare și copii” [Stories with Women Writers and Children], coordinated by Alina Purcaru, an example of writing the self using poetry and affection – in other words, l’écriture féminine. Given the fact that the main goal of this study is the investigation of motherhood, while focusing on specific issues such as the body, agency, autonomy, alterity, and their relation to the patriarchal norms, the result is a compassionate approach to writing from the point of view of female authors. To create and procreate become the epitome of this study, in a field ever so dynamic as the ethics of birth and literature.

The way we love. Gender Codes and the Romanian Erotic Novel

Abstract: My paper aims to present how the Romanian romance novel written between late 19th century and the Second World War fictionalized some of the gender codes active in that particular timeframe in social and familial contexts. A very popular subgenre amid the unprofessional readers, romance fiction rises a new kind of responsibility for literary critics and historians, that traditionally gave little to no attention to the matter of toxic gender codes found in these novels. This article attempts to analyse, by means of both close and distant reading tools, a few narrative aspects that encoded gender inequality.

Geofeminism in Romanian Fiction. An Introduction

Abstract: The relationship established between geography, literature, the study of space, and gender studies is one that generates increased knowledge regarding perspectives on literary works. From this vantage point, in the present essay we offer an analysis of several Romanian novels, temporally close to the beginnings of literature in Romania, from a geofeminist perspective, a hybrid concept which aids the mapping of literary territories. The maps thus resulted from this type of analysis offer a much more complex positioning within the European cultural space, even more so if one considers the surfacing of real historical elements, inserted into the novels analysed, which stand as samples for the present demonstration.

The Prose of Women Writers after WWII. The Conditions of the Second Wave of Failure

Abstract: The paper aims to outline the historical contingencies shaping Romanian literature written by women during the interwar and especially the postwar periods. In this pursuit, certain theoretical foundations are provided by the theories of authorship and subjectivity associated with Michel Foucault, Louis Althusser and Judith Butler. Finally, a series of quantitative analyses are presented as material support for the varying degrees and aims of marginalization of literature written by women.

Keywords: literature written by women, marginalization, analysis of power relations, quantitative analysis of historical data, postwar Romanian literature.

“The female writing” and the gender traps of the 2000s poetry. A re-reading of the critical (pre)conceptions around the texts written by Svetlana Cârstean and Elena Vlădăreanu

Abstract: This article attempts to clear up the concept of “female writing” such as Hélène Cixous developed it in her manifesto The Laugh of the Medusa. Along with the hard side of Generation 2000, the women also asserted themselvs through a radical attitude, which led to a critical legitimation by exhibiting the forms of discrimination against women, as well to a reductionist labelling with “female poetry”. By analysing the poetics of two different Romanian authors, Svetlana Cârstean and Elena Vlădăreanu, this paper also investigates the applicability of Cixous’ concept to these writers.

Cella Serghi and the feminist psychological prose

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to attempt to offer a proper re-evaluation of Cella Serghi’s literary debut and overall importance when it comes to Romanian literature. Her debut novel was extremely well-received by the Romanian readership; however, many of the critics dismissed her prose as being a reflection, or at least the result of Camil Petrescu’s guidance and influence. After examining the marginalisation and the unjust simplification that her prose suffered, the paper introduces some considerations on feminism in Romania, for a more accurate depiction of her significance.

REVIEW: Lajos Balázs. What Makes You Feel Out of this World. Sexual Culture and Morality among Peasants

Abstract: The book of Lajos Balázs entitled What makes you feel out of this world. Sexual culture and morality among peasants (Pallas-Akadémia, 2009, 704 pag.) written in Hungarian is an ethnographic survey, a real monography of the topic of sexuality and sexual morality in a village of Eastern Transylvania, Csíkszentdomokos (Sândominic). The topic of the book on the one hand is part of various scientific fields (sociology, sexual-psychology, folkloristics etc.), but it is still a taboo in Romanian culture and it is recently also subject of a public debate about the necessity of sexual education in Romanian schools. On the other hand, there is no other work which tackles with the specific tools of ethnography this topic in such a depth, so it can be considered a really important achievement in the field worth to be translated at least in Romanian.

REVIEW: Mihaela Ursa, Adrian Tătăran, and Alexandra Turcu, eds., Zoe, Be a Man! Gender Codes in the Culture of Contemporary Romania

Abstract: The recent publication of the collective volume on gender studies Zoe, fii bărbată! Coduri de Gen în cultura României contemporane / Zoe, be a man! Gender Codes in the culture of contemporary Romania (Paralela 45, 248 pag.) casts light on the different problems regarding gender topics which are embedded in a Romanian local context, highlighting especially the inequality that women have been facing and the possibilities of liberation from within the corrupted, patriarchal matrix, with the studies mainly rooted in second wave feminist theories. The approach of the research conducted in this volume is interdisciplinary, featuring studies with a focus on various subjects in the humanistic field.
