The Archeology of the Concept of Culture. The Transition of the Modern Episteme

This study’s goal is the analysis of the transition epoch on a European scale (16th to 18th century). This moment represents a fundamental step took by the entire European population from North to South and from East to West. A vast collection of events, actions, epistemological orientations and cultural movements with significant impact on the history and existence of national, continental and global communities have been identified and analyzed. This research signals out the theoretical perspectives defining the concepts of culture and civilization, as given by ethnologists, sociologists, culture critics and philosophers.

History and / or Anniversary. Bozgan, Ovidiu și Bogdan Murgescu (coord.), Universitatea din București 1864 – 2014, Editura Universității din București, 2014 [Review / Book Presentation]

The present article aims to draw attention to the importance of the historiography of universities. The imposing volume, University of Bucharest 1864-2014, appeared at the celebration of 150 years since the founding of these institutions. The author analyzes the chances of a scientific endeavor for an anniversary. Focusing on the inter-war and post-war period, it also shows progress towards previous volumes, but also shortcomings that persisted in this volume. In this sense, he welcomes the adequate treatment of the role of Professor Dimitrie Gusti in the development of the university, as well as the misunderstanding of some of his actions. He also noted the more balanced, more structured character of the chapters that covered the period from 1938 to 1989.

“East Central Europe” Reconceptualizing the Social: Writing Social History in the East Central Europe
Vol 34-35, 2007- 008, 1-2 [Review / Book Presentation]

This paper aims to bring into the public’s attention a book that was published over a decade ago, “Reconceptualizing the Social: Writing Social History in East Central Europe”. While it has received some international attention, the book has had little echo in the Romanian space, due to the fact social history is still in its infancy, thus, the debates about theories, paradigms and research methodologies in the field of social history have not been in the foreground of scientific debate in the post-communist era. Given these considerations, we find it most appropriate to review this collection of studies since in the last decade, more and more Romanian scholars have taken interest in the interdisciplinary historical research. We hope that bringing into the spotlight books such as Iordachi’s collection might further spark the interest for theoretical and methodological debates regarding the Romanian research in the field of social history.

Buddhist Cantos from Bucharest I. Ion Pillat’s Visări budiste (1912) as “readings from Burnouf” [Asia in Europe II]

This contribution in three parts analyses for the first time Ion Pillat’s Buddhist poetry of his debut volume (Visări budiste [Buddhist Reveries] from Visări păgâne [Pagan Reveries], Bucharest: «Minerva» – Institut de Arte Grafice și Editură, 1912) compared against plausible European and Asian religious and literary sources, contexts, and significance, in order to palliate the callous non-sense of some literary critics and the cultural prejudice inflicted by some scholars of religion. The five poems – A Buddhist Prayer (a title subsequently changed to A Prayer to the Buddha), Samsara [saṃsāra], Towards Nirvana, Karman and A Hymn of Worship – are illustrative of the wider topics and literary moves of an ‘Asian Renaissance’, and highlight the Buddhist legacy of Eugène Burnouf (1801-1852), a professor of the Collège de France who would become the founding father of modern Buddhist Studies worldwide and whose Magna Carta of Buddhism Studies would also have a Romanian echo, from Odobescu (who moreover frequented his classes) to Eminescu (who authored more and better Buddhist cantos) or Georgian (the first to critically edit Sanskrit texts) to young Pillat, a schoolboy, then student in Paris since 1905, to become the first translator into Romanian of another pupil of Sanskrit India in Paris and Harvard in the 1910-1914, T. S. Eliot.

A Contemporary Of Butterflies, God And Marcus Aurelius

Although Romulus Bucur proves to be an influential figure in the most recent Romanian poetry trends, he has been drawing a peculiar type of critique throughout his thirty-five years of career. Some of the important literary historians (Manolescu, Zaciu, Negrici) have simply forgotten him in their syntheses, some (Simion, Martin, Cistelecan) have only settled for dealing with his work by means of singular interventions, in a categorical and descriptive manner, without following through the author’s overall path. This unfair situation would have probably continued if Bucur wouldn’t have published, in 2015, two books that trigger the effect of a geniune electric shock: The Art of War, an anthology with all the coordinates for it to be regarded as masterpiece, and automonography Opus Caementicium, where he explains (following the line that began with Poe, further used by Eliot and Pound) his reference system and poetic preferences. With suggestions from the latter book as a startpoint, the current essay offers a plausible and functional model of understanding the poetry of Romulus Bucur as a continuum novel, where, almost like in David Mitchell’s book, Cloud Atlas, the hero (soaked in musical and literary culture) stays true to himself, while also changing his age, epoque, temper and even his state of matter.

Maximalist Novels: An Introduction in a Romanian Context

The second half of the twentieth century has offered a number of great novels that came to be described as maximalist, due to their objectives and realization. As a result, more and more critical attention has been focused on the ways in which these works circulate and influence the mediums to which they are translated. The present paper synthesizes the concept of maximalist novel and tries to analyse the elements that constitute its theoretical specificity. Moreover, the article explores the existence or the absence of some of the canonical text that represent this genre in Romanian, trying to give an account of the relation between the Romanian literary space and the maximalist paradigm.

Beyond Words- Identity (de)construction and architecture of silence in Le Ghetto intérieur by Santiago H. Amigorena –

We propose to study the way in which silence, as a “part of language”, takes shape into the verbal matter of the Argentine writer of French expression Santiago H. Amigorena’s novel Le Ghetto intérieur (2019) and to discover the main textual mechanisms of exploration and construction, including the classification, description and explanation of the functions of silence in the novel, in close connection with the mechanisms of the main character’s (de)construction of identity. We will also take into consideration the polyphonic character of the novel that resides not only in references to other literary works but also to media discourse. A several aspects as the making of reality, the true rendering of History, the necessity of remembering or the shared guilt are being discussed.

The Ugly – from Aesthetic and Ethical Category to Spiritual State

In this article we propose an approach to the concept of ugly/ ugliness in the Romanian cultural realm, both from an aesthetic-ethical perspective, and especially from the spiritual-moral one. If physical ugliness can sometimes be the mask of inner beauty, spiritual ugliness is the obvious sign of impropriety and vainglory. Perched upon the fragile border with the beautiful, the ugly/ugliness flaunts a chameleonic character, usually joining forces with evil and simulating the good, the result being a destructive, tragic one. Regrettably, the ugly can degenerate into an (un)seen maleficent (omni)presence, as a factor of discord, of disturbance in the family, community and cosmic order.
However, the ugly can also be perceived as a spiritual state, as an ontic feeling, which gradually experiences longing, sadness, loneliness, taciturnity, mourning, despondency, boredom (akedia), or, in the worst case, the lack of will to live. The safe remedies offered by the Romanian people’spirituality are the song, musical lament (doina) and altruistic love, sublimated into the authentic ecclesial communion.

Protocols of the Early Modern Witch Trials in Sibiu

Witch trials are an important phenomenon of Western European as well as Transylvanian social, religious and cultural history. The witch hunt spread throughout Europe and also reached Transylvania, even if it was not so common here. Those who have been proven to possess such witchcraft have been severely sanctioned by the law, in most cases by burning at the stake after witch trials involving a different number of witnesses. Although the model of the inquisition trial was used the existence of strict rules for the text structure cannot be proved. The analyzed texts show that the witchcraft protocols cannot be considered very rigid documents in the form, despite the rather similar structure (complaint, testimony, judgment), the sequence of articles of the law and some introductory and final formulas. The protocols are rather the result of the notary’s or clerk’s intention to carry out the change of perspective primarily by means of direct and indirect speech, to translate the dialect into a standard German language, and to use the corresponding Latin legal terms.

Clarice Lispector, The Passions after G.H.: Metamorphoses and Violence

Compared to Kafka, Joyce or Virginia Woolf, the Brazilian writer Clarice Lispector fascinates the literary critics and also the common reading public. Her unusual narrative strategies and her taste for various stylistic experiments have transformed Lispector’s work in an open problem, many interpretations underlying the novelty of her writing and the difficulty to find a unique explanation for her symbols or artistic images. Her novel The Passion According to G.H. (1964) represents a meditation on literature and its essence, but also depicts the journey of the protagonist in search of her true self, in the attempt to assume (and affirm!) her individuality. G.H.’s encounter with the cockroach determines her spiritual awakening and encourages the reader themselves to try to find the true meaning of human existence.

Keywords: Latin American fiction, Brazilian literature, violence, feminine writing, sacred, sacrifice.

The Four Genetic Phases in Flaubert’s Correspondence

In the light of the extraordinary development of textual genetics, which proposes to rediscover the work’s text through its rough drafts and its preparatory documents, this article focuses on the genetic dimension of Gustave Flaubert’s Correspondence, as various letters illustrate the four genetic phases of some of his greatest works. A work’s collection of genetic documentation includes not only the writer’s autographic work manuscripts (work plans, scenarios, note-pads, documentary notes, rough drafts, fair copies, etc), but also various autographic writings useful to the comprehension of textual genetics such as the author’s correspondence, personal journal, etc. Flaubert’s Correspondence represents, in this context, one of the examples of 19th century writers’ correspondence whose genetic dimension proves to be extremely important.

“Break It in Your Face, so He Break It Not Behind” On Shakespeare’s Toilet Puns and Their Romanian Translations

“For all his admiration and even imitation of Rabelais, Shakespeare has hardly once or twice burnt so much as a stray pinch of fugitive incense on the altar of Cloacina,” notes Algernon Charles Swinburne poetically on the playwright’s toilet humor. Sixty years later, Eric Partridge, author of the seminal Shakespeare’s Bawdy, would reiterate, along much the same lines, the dramatist’s alleged contempt for the crudest of all manifestations of wit. Since then, however, scholarly attitudes toward crude humor have gradually become more lenient and inquisitive about what we perceive today as instances of off-colour wordplay, challenging linguistic myths about their anachronic attribution and devoting book-length studies to them. This article follows several of the Bard’s most obvious and obscure puns on the podex and flatulence in an attempt to ascertain whether Romanian translators have aligned themselves with this phenomenon or, if not, how they approach this form of Shakespearean wit.

Alimentary ideologies and linguistic fashions

The present study aims at the construction of a glossary of terms related with the lexical field of alimentary diets. It will focus on the dynamics, semantics, and productivity of the lexical suffix -arian. Thus, it will build an inventory of its linguistic occurrences, differentiating between its uses as a noun and as an adjective, showing how the creative principle of the Romanian language functions concretely in this particular field.

Keywords: contemporary Romanian language, lexical creativity, suffix word formation, lexicon of alimentary diets, the suffix -arian

A Cultural Approach To Legal Translation: Contemporary Perspectives And Challenges

The preliminary part of the paper aims to set the context by highlighting the binding and enduring connection between law and culture, particularly by informed understanding of different legal systems accompanied by harmonization of legal terminology endorsed by mutual awareness of cultural diversity. Furthermore, the main section of the presentation will provide a thorough and in-depth analysis of linguistic challenges and cultural barriers in the process of translating legal texts, exemplified by recent misuse of English loan words, which requires a high level of proficiency in the target and source languages in addition to a wise ability to adapt to the socio-cultural context and ultimately render a message that facilitates communication and endorses an accurate conveyance of legal terminology. To conclude, the challenges to legal translation are far beyond the linguistic area, as the field is imbued with different cultural contexts, shaped by socio-political and historical evolution, in addition to the wealth of legal terminology applications.

Chinese Culturenes – the Becarers of the Most Subtle Cultural Implications – in Romanian Translation (I)

Culturemes are the markers of the source culture, which can reach the reader in the target language only through the ability of the translator, who must, in fact, be a great connoisseur of the most hidden cultural details. For the transposition of a foreign culture into a new culture, for a communication between them, a loan is needed, retrieval and processing of information so that it is accepted. In order to achieve this goal, a corpus of culturemes from 31 contemporary Chinese novels translated in Romanian between 2000 and 2018 through direct translation were analysed.

Three Romanian Folk Tales Frame the Petre Ispirescu and Grigore Crețu Collections

In the first part of the present article wI focus on the content of two Romanian folk tale collections. The first belongs to Petre Ispirescu and the second to Grigore Crețu, writers who dedicated their lives to gathering folk stories. I while also identifying the main characteristics of these collections. Then we analysed three folk tales comparatiuely These folk tales have a common motif: the golden apple. The structure of these stories is similar, and the basic difference between them concerns the details regarding the complexity of tests the Prince Charming has to surpass. I dealt with the part each category of characters plays in these tales and I showed in details why this motif is so important in many European cultures, and what specific features it has in the Romanian folk stories.

In a Small Town: The Romanian Revolution between “Videograms of a Revolution” and “12:08 East of Bucharest”

This article aims to outline a series of connections and changes of paradigm regarding cinematographic representations of the Romanian Revolution, as they are reflected in two Romanian feature films that deal with this topic: Videograms of a Revolution (Andrei Ujică & Harun Farocki, 1992) and 12:08 East of Bucharest (Corneliu Porumboiu, 2006). This comparison allows for a broader analysis with multiple theoretical territories in view: media theories (television as a concept and as a medium plays a major role in both films), post- and anticommunism and the memory of Revolution.

The Communist as Villain in the Romanian Cinema after 1989

In Romanian filmmaking, the fall of Ceausescu’s regime and, with it, of communism set in motion an entire movement seeking to retrieve the history of 1948-1989; on the one hand, this movement was in tune with similar local artistic manifestations and, on the other hand, with the variations of the political attitudes undertaken by the post-1989 generations. Many of the films launched after the Revolution approached the construction of a negative image of communism, especially by exposing its wrongdoings, where the center of gravity was the communist used as an essentially negative character vital for the operation of the victim-aggressor binomial. This study focuses on the main recurrences associated with the portrayal of the communist in the post-1990 Romanian film; thus, this analysis seeks to open bridges toward the understanding of the ways in which the domestic film allowed the anti-communist discourse to shape it, but it also looks into the modalities in which films, in their turn, shaped the said anti-communist discourse.

The Afternoon of a Torturer – the Anatomy of an Impossible Case

justifyleft;”>The author begins with the theory of the three representations of the Communist past, visible in the post-communist narrative discourse, both in literature and cinema, already discussed in previous articles. The present article brings forward new insights regarding the second representation, still inspired by the anticommunist stance, but already surpassing its limitations towards other narrative options and perspectives. Lucian Pintilie’s film The Afternoon of a Torturer is considered a key example due to the controversial aspect of the character portrayed, due to the factual dimension of the case and its implicit ambiguities.

“Chewing gum for the eyes”. The critical reception of ‘90s Romanian Popular Cinema

The critical exclusion of Romanian popular film occurred both in the communist age and in the transition period of the 1990s. With a primary focus on the author’s intent and on the film director, the genre films, although successful with their audience, occupied a peripheral position in the studies regarding Romanian filmmaking, since, in general, they are entertainment productions.
This article seeks to look deeper into the critical reception of popular films in the magazine Cinema in communism, but also in Noul Cinema [New Cinema] (1990-1998), to prove that, regardless of the political system, they were regarded from the same point of view, which emphasized their irrelevance, their poor quality or the use of Western formulae. Second of all, the analysis of popular films that scored high among the audience at the beginning of the 1990s, which were made by directors who had also been active in socialist filmmaking, shows that not only the authors promoted by the magazine Noul Cinema and who made anti-communist movies approached the transition phenomenon, but also those who chose commercial filmmaking.

Book review: Anna BATORI, Space in Romanian and Hungarian Cinema

This review critiques Anna Batori’s Space in Romanian and Hungarian Cinema. The author of this innovative approach on two of the major Eastern European cinemas focuses on the functions of space and spatiality in the Romanian and Hungarian films from the socialist and the post-socialist period, continuing the concepts of space and visibility, as theorised by Henri Lefebvre. In her work, Batori describes and analyses the sense of enclosure that these cinemas favour, either vertical, in the communist buildings under Ceausescu, or horizontal, in the Hungarian Alföld.

Representations of Carceral Spaces in Post-Communist Romanian Cinema

Amongst the key themes in the post-communist Romanian cinema, the topic of communist prisons was the one which elicited the most virulent anti-communist discourse. In this piece, an analysis of three films – The Earth’s Most Beloved Son, The Afternoon of a Torturer and Arrest – reveals the types of mechanisms that these representations elicit, from the dichotomic portraits of the torturer and the tortured, their distinctive formal construction elements, as well as the ways in which these films relate to theoretical territories of authors such as Michel Foucault and Hannah Arendt.
