Old Romanian Book in the Habsburg Empire (1691-1830)

Research on Old Romanian books has a history of over one century, of one century and a half, to be more specific, in the Romanian cultural space. Old Romanian books, periodized in the Romanian space between 1508 and 1830, have so far not been the subject of research in a European context, with the exception of a few comparative surveys with the neighbouring countries. These surveys suggest the conclusion that from 1691 to 1830 (from the beginning of Habsburg rule in Transylvania to the upper conventional limits of Old Romanian literature) the evolution of culture, illustrated by the production of books, took place in a South-Eastern and Western European cultural context. Given these coordinates and referring globally to the concept of the investigation, the aim of this book is to acquire in-depth knowledge about the image, the content and the role of the Romanian books printed in the Habsburg Empire, in the Romanian language, regardless of the place of their publication, and about the books printed by Romanian authors, regardless of the language in which they were published, in the same geographical space of Transylvania, from 1691 to 1830

A Precursor of Romanian Transylvanian Fiction. Vasile Aaron redivivus

There was a great enlightener in Sibiu, at a time when Romanian culture had not exceeded the transitional phase into the modern age. The scholar’s cultural legacy outlines that his entire short life was „torn between laborious paragraphs of judicial codes and the unleashed reverie of poetry”. History of Romanian literature unjustly mentions Vasile Aaron among minor poets. Thus, two tireless literary historians from Sibiu, Liliana Maria Popa and Ioan-Nicolae Popa, have dedicated theirs lives to a purpose both noble and difficult to achieve: the restoration of Vasile Aaron’s entire work, which would delete the unjust „minor poet” label.

The spreading of the books from the princely print houses from Alba Iulia (other than Cyrillic alphabet) XVIth-XVIIIth centuries

The spreading of the printed material from Alba Iulia is the most conclusive proof that the print houses from Alba Iulia influenced greatly their times. The fact that many books have survived in various libraries all over Europe confirms the wide dispersion of these prints.

Romanian Cyrillic book collection – prints and manuscripts – from an ethnographic village museum from Arieş Valley. Contributions to Old Romanian Bibliography

Lupşa, a village in the upper Arieş valley, hosts a very interesting etnographic museum, the fruit of the local teacher Pamfil Albu’s livelong labour. The museum’s exhibits are illustrative for the life, occupations and traditions of the people living in this area of the Stone Fortress, the Apuseni Mountains. Also, very importantly, the museum hosts a small old Romanian book collection from the 17th and 19th centuries. This collection, having never undergone a systematic study before, makes the object of the present communication. By this, we aim to shed a well-deserved light upon this little cultural and historic treasure and to allow the 23 titles of the collection to become part of the larger informational and research network.

The Catalogue of the Franciscan Friars’ Library from Orăştie (1888)

The work brings forth the catalogue of the library owned by the Franciscan Monastery from Orăştie, which was created, as understood from the title, in the 19th century. The document is a part of the Roman Catholic Parochial Fund from Orăştie, it is situated in the Archdiocesan Archives of Alba Iulia and it is named Catalogus Librorum V. Residentiae Szaszvarosensis P. P. Franciscanorum Aae Prov. S. Stephani Regis Apostolici anno 1888 confectus.

The investigation follows the description of the catalogue as well as studying the content of the library, with the purpose of discovering what was, at the time, the book universe on which, the lectors of the books located in the Franciscan Monastery from Orăştie, could rely upon.

The catalogue includes 613 titles, recorded in 7 categories: Philologia, Philosophia, Jus Civile, Theologia, Jus Ecclesiasticum, Regularia, Miscellanea. A great deal of the books were published in the 19th century, but evidence suggests that there was another fund of older books, printed in the 16th-18th century, which probably entered in the collection after the year 1730, when the conventual Franciscan life in the community resumed in Orăştie.

Used since ancient times to treat various diseases, medical waters from Romania have been studied since the XVIIIth century by doctors, pharmacists and chemists among them standing out Ferentz Nyulas, Hungarian doctor and chemist. For 10 years he investigated the medical waters from Transylvania, also relying on his predecessors’ research and he wrote an important paper in Hungarian language, published in Cluj in 1800. Divided into three volumes, the work presents some physical and chemical analyzes, focused on Rodna’s springs, but also on diseases that could be treated with each type of water depending on the components. The paper became a medical guide because the author gives some advices on how to use the waters, the perfect period when people could use them, the right cure for every disease and the importance of having a balanced diet.

Ore minerals of the Nitra County acording to Notitia Hungariae historico-geographica by Matthias Bel

Matthias Bel in his work Notitia Hungariae Novae historico-geographica offered a contemporary view of the status, importance, response and concrete realities of counties of Hungary within the Habsburg monarchy. The study is historical and geographical research history and environmental issues of ore materials, and their extraction in the Nitra County in the first half of the 18th century. Description of the subject contains text “Ore storage yards” in § XII. science section (Membrum primum physicum) of general parts of Notitia of Nitra County in Hungary (1742). The “probe” into Bel’s characteristics of this theme we have realized through critical commentary on contemporary texts supplemented by other sources, respectively relevant literature and information obtained by studying geological maps. Specific findings, we finally compared with the results of field research and their own knowledge of the subject. The facts which led M. Bel in a particular article, of course, do not always correspond with the present state of knowledge issues. However, they reflect the contemporary understanding of the ore minerals in the studied area and also bear witness to the creativity and method of this scholar.

The circulation of old books from the Blaj Printing House. a regional journey: copies and edited and inedited notes from the Alba County

The first part of the present study contains detailed bibliographic references concerning the debut and the temporal progress of the research conducted on old printings of Blaj, Alba county, as part of the more general research regarding the presence of old Romanian books (emitted by other old typographic centers such as: Târgovişte, Bucureşti, Bălgrad – Alba Iulia, Braşov, Sebeş, Iaşi, Buzău, Râmnic, Buda, Neamţ etc.) in the same region.

The present historiographic journey is extremely useful in the relevation of the present state of the research on the old books of Blaj as it is the basis of several interpretations concerning the circulation of certain copies, their vintage price, the means of acquisition and distribution etc. The third part of the present study and also the most consistent one is comprised of a necessary and very useful documentary Annex which reunites different notes from the old books of Blaj under study annoted with comentaries that encompass 37 old Blaj editions, in 104 actual copies.

Bishop Ignatius Batthyány and the History of the Romanian Church in Transylvania in the 18th and 19th Century Documents

The present study attempts to highlight the inter-ecclesiastical relations in the 18th century Transylvania, and to recover two new documentary collections issued in the 18th and 19th centuries, currently stored in the Batthyaneum Library and the Roman Catholic Archdiocese Archives of Alba Iulia.

Ignatius Batthyány (1780-1798) is a Roman Catholic Bishop whose interest in the history and culture of the Romanian Church is generally known. The novelty of the present approach brings up the intellectual bishop’s effort to collect and systematize previous and contemporary documents of his age about the Romanians’ ecclesiastical history.

Unknown documents support the author of the study to retrace the institutional and personal relations between the Roman Catholic bishop of Alba Iulia Ignatiu Batthyány and two united Greek Catholic bishops of Blaj: Grigorie Maior (1773-1782) and Ioan Bob (1782-1830).

Book catalogues from the holdings of Batthyaneum Library from Alba Iulia

This research is confined to spatial and temporal limits as the actual holdings of Batthyaneum Library comprise more book catalogues from throughout Europe. We will only refer to Italian Peninsula and the time span 1783-1785, period in which Imre Dániel, librarian of bishop Ignác Batthyány, was there serving the scientific needs of the bishop.

The Annexe from the final part of the research includes catalogues that were brought by Dániel from Italy and about which we find information either in the correspondence with the bishop, or the journal/Diarium which Dániel was obliged to write at the request of the high priest. Catalogues were printed in libraries or printing houses from Florence, Naples, Padova, Parma, Rome and Venice, localities that Dániel visited throughout his staying in Italy. They not only comprise papers in Latin, but also Italian, French, German, Spanish, English or even Dutch, also addressing the Anglo-Saxon area.

Advertising means, these catalogues managed to hold an essential role in spreading handwritten and printed book and thus, allowed purchasing of works offered within them by institutions and personalities of the moment. It is also the case of bishop Ignác Batthyány who enriched this way the library that nowadays bears his name.

Editions of the works of René Descartes in the collections of the Romanian Academy Library, Cluj-Napoca branch

The works of the French philosopher and scholar René Descartes (1596 – 1650), the one who revolutionized the sciences in his stime, have a well deserved place in the collections of the Romanian Academy Library, Cluj-Napoca branch. The numerous bibliophile editions printed in the XVIIth century by famous printers, such as the Elsevier family members especially caught our attention. Among the possessors of these editions are also some of the famous Transylvanian intellectuals, such as Timotei Cipariu, Ioan Vancea, Gheorghe Şincai, Mihail Halici, K. Vásárhelyi Péter, Szatmárnémeti Sámuel and Pataki Sámuel.

Owners of Spanish old books in Batthyaneum Library (17thto 19th century)

The study aims to retrace the circulation of Spanish old books from Batthyaneum Library through the identification of their owner, institutions or private persons from the clerical or laic environment.

We present and describe the coats of arms from the interior of the books, under the form of graved ex-libris, seals or manuscripts. The presence of these works in the epoch shows the interest of the bibliophile owners for certain domains of knowledge, highlighting the intellectual profile of elite, e.g. a cardinal from Wien and a Catholic bishop from Alba Iulia. The laic books owners were either teachers or persons with nobiliary titles.

Key-words: intellectual, Spain, Alba Iulia, book owners, library, Spanish books, ex-libris.

“Transylvanice” printings from the Collection of the Tulcea Museum

The Collection of Old Books from the “Gavrilă Simion” Eco-Museum Research Institute of Tulcea contains a few dozens of copies from the category of so-called “Transylvanice” Collection, some editions being present in many volumes or kept in a number of copies. The topic refers to the books printed on the territory of Transylvania influenced by many cultures and religions, written in Latin, German and Hungarian but also to the papers written by German intellectuals and printed in other Printing works, at Lipsiae [Leipzig], Posonii [Bratislava] or Vienna.

The identified books, which are researched or whose value is enhanced by this study, are printed in 1730-1862, the majority coming from printers from Sibiu and Cluj. Among the authors, knowledgeable German historians, one can mention the following names: Martin Felmer, Joseph Carol Eder, Christianus Schesaeus, Iacob Ferdinand Miller. Most books are printed by Martin Hochmeister, Peter Barth, J. Tilsch and other printers from Sibiu and Cluj. Moreover, the “Transylvanice” books kept at Tulcea are representative for the History of the Great Principality of Transylvania: Statuta Municipalia Provinciae Transylvaniae Fratrum Minorum Strictioris Observatiae (Şumuleu-Ciuc], 1730), Minerologia Magni Principatus Transilvaniae (Cluj, 1767), Primae Lineae M. Principatus Transsilvaniae Historiam Antiqui, Medii et Recentioris Aevi (Cibinii, 1780).

The copies come from either the Romanian Academia Library as being a fund which was taken from there, or they were purchased by the Tulcea Museum from the second-hand bookshops from Bucharest. Some books keep the property notes, ex-libris stamps and annotation of some cultural associations or different private people.

Incunabula from the collections of the Bucharest Metropolitan Library

Recent researches carried out in the storehouses of different institutions holding heritage assets such as old books led to new conclusions with regard to redating or reidentifications of some old printings, more than once information correcting bibliographies and specialised catalogues. A particular case is the unstudied holdings, mostly due to absence of specialised staff or organizing issues.

This study proposes to bring new contributions on copies of old printings from the incunabular period existent on the territory of Romania. We have in view the collection of Nicolae Iorga Library, belonging to Bucharest Metropolitan Library, collection that comprises three incunabula unknown to specialised bibliography. We refer to titles launched by printing houses that functioned in Italy, in Venice at the end of the XVth century: Toma de Aquino, Summa contra gentiles (1480); Robertus Caracciolus, Opera (1490) and Gaietanus de Thienis, Expositio in Aristotelem (1493).

The image of Habsburg Monarchy in Samuil Micu’s work

The Enlightenment began for the Transylvanian Romanians with the Religious Unification act of 1700. It was stopped in this way the dissolution of the Orthodox Church threatened by Calvinism and it had been inserting to collective sensitivity the possibility of social regeneration by conversion to the Greek-Catholic confession, promoted by the Habsburg Empire. The advantages of the religious union with the Church of Rome occurred in secular culture, but also in the religious culture by sending young scholars to complete their studies at the Urban College of Propaganda Fide in Rome and Pazmaneum in Vienna. Among young people sent to study in these institutions is also Samuil Micu, who had impressed through the complexity of thought and his encyclopedic knowledge.

Being trained at the universities of the empire, into an Enlightenment background, the Transylvanian intellectual will structural assume the discourse of Emperor Joseph II, and his image reveals the propensity of the Romanian community towards the sovereign in Vienna. Samuil Micu’s vision is iosefin and it is expressed itself in the language of the emperor. Servitude is condemned in vehement terms, the suffering of the serfs impresses him, but the improvement of the social conditions had to result from the reforming work of the emperor, and not by a rebellion of the dissatisfied masses. In those circumstances, the reign of Joseph II offers Samuil Micu the best time in the eighteenth century to express his solidarity with the reformist sovereign.

Border Guard Schools Libraries Contents

A good quality education system implied to endow and equip school libraries, in order to serve to „the advancement and rising of education”. They were meant to help and enrich the knowledge of pupils and school teachers, but equally to help the villagers. That is why the libraries from former ranger schools were well equipped. They contained manuals, fiction, periodicals and other useful publications, printed on both sides of Carpathian mountains, as well as famous classical authors. Part of these books were inhereted from times when these villages formed the military border of the country. The most important library was in Orlat village and contained 403 volumes. Other village school libraries had a pretty big number of volumes for those times: Cugir, 370; Haţeg, 218; Copăcel, 130; Veştem, 118; Mărgineni, 117.

Ioan (John) or Iancu Hunyadi? The name of the anti-Ottoman warrior in the Byzantine chronicles

The name of the great anti-Ottoman warrior still remains a disputed issue in historiography. Given that the specialist haven’t yet agreed if he was Ioan (John) or Iancu, the controversy continues. Contemporary Byzantine chronicler – Georgios Sphrantzes, Doukas, Laonikos Chalkokondylas, Kritobulos of Imbros and Zotikos Paraspondylos – submitted numerous information regarding the life and activity of the Transylvanian hero. Such information is found in the late chronicles also, as the one of Makarios Melissenos (Pseudo-Phrantzes) and various insignificant ones. In all these papers we can found the same inconsistence – all the authors use either Ioan (John) or Iancu.

An interesting British perspective from the early nineteenth century in his work „History of the House of Austria” on Russian-Austrian-Turkish War of 1787-1792

William Coxe is a leading English traveller and memorialist who in the late eighteenth century and early nineteenth century, published a series of books about Central and Eastern Europe. Born in London in 1747 and educated at Eton College, William Coxe was able to visit on several occasions this geographical area, as guardian of some young men, members of English aristocratic families. All his travels and experiences were published by the author in various papers, most of them having a strong historical and memorialist character. His work “History of the House of Austria, from The Foundation Of The Monarchy by Rhodolph of Hapsburgh, The Death of Leopold The Second: 1218 … to .. 1792” was published in two volumes in London in 1807. The above mentioned book is William Coxe’s most important historical work and, by its magnitude, paves the way for the Anglo-Saxon historiography which systematically dealt with the Habsburg Empire history . His book also contains original documents, though his own writing is of the dullest manner and shows no higher qualities than those of the conscientious analyst. This paper aims to follow how the author and the Anglo-Saxon perceived political relations between the House of Habsburg and the Principality of Transylvania in the nineteenth century from the perspective of Russian-Austrian-Turkish war of 17871792 period.

Transylvanian religious books in Walachia in the era of Phanariot reigns (1716-1821). Dissemination, reception and Orthodox counteroffensive

The methods of dissemination and circulation of Romanian old book printed in Walachia in the era of Phanariot reigns (1716-1821) in Transylvania and Banat have been extensively researched. It is fully proved that despite measures of censure and prohibition of „schismatic” books across the mountains the Habsburg authorities regularly take, the liturgical book in Romanian penetrates not only in Orthodox churches, but even in the United ones. Less investigated is the reverse phenomenon, of the dissemination in the Romanian Countries of books published in the empire’s printing presses during the eighteenth century and the first decades of the nineteenth century. Since the second half of the eighteenth century, as a reaction to the ban on import of Church book in the Orthodox space by imperial decrees 1768 and 1770, as well as increasing of the number of Transylvanian books entering the local market and Orthodox hierarchs start to formally react to the sales of these books in their dioceses. If at first complaints to rulers have a rather economic motivation, to stem competition, invoking the privilege granted to local print shops on the sale of religious books (1765), in time they acquire a strictly theological argument, invoking non-compliance with Orthodox church tenets (1793, 1804). It was only in 1793 in Walachia the establishment of customs control over books printed in other places, especially in printing presses from Blaj and Sibiu and acceptance for sale only after prior verification made by representatives of the Archdiocese (for religious books) and of the Reign (for those with secular content). Thus import of Transylvanian book was not banned, but only subject to the confessional and moral censorship.

Our research follows dissemination practices and how Transylvanian books are received by the Romanian society against the background of prohibitive measures taken by local authorities. Our documentary support was constituted by deeds issued by hierarchies and rulers of Walachia on imports of books from the Habsburg Empire, as well as the writs on specimens preserved in various collections, which entered the Walachia during the mid-eighteenth century, until the mid-nineteenth century.

Key words: Walachia, old Romanian book, notes, methods of distribution, books sale, privilege

The Influence of Ukrainian Woodcuts on Different Romanian Typographical Centers (17th-19th Centuries)

The Ukrainian woodcuts, particularly those accomplished at Kiev and Lviv, reached high values both as the aesthetic and technical aspects are concerned. The influence of the Ukrainian woodcut on the Romanian one contributed to the modernization of national graphic art. The political, ecclesiastical and cultural relations between Romania and Ukraine made their contributions to the development of printing and xylography on the Romanian territory. Among the Ukrainian gifted craftsmen who came to Romania was Ilia A. He decorated Warlaam’s Homiletics (Iasi, 1643) which is one of the most beautiful Romanian books. Ukrainian books were intensely circulated within the Romanian monachal and typographical ambience. The Romanian typographical centers in which the book graphics is directly influenced by the Ukrainian one are: Govora, Cămpulung, Mănăstirea Dealu, Târgovişte, Iaşi, Bucharest, Buzău, Râmnic, Rădăuţi, Blaj, Mănăstirea Neamţ. Therefore 7 centers are from Wallachia, 3 from Moldovia and 1 from Transylvania. In the 17th century there were 7 centers, in the 18th century, 6 and in the 19th century, 2. The Romanian woodcuts of Ukrainian origin were used as models as well, and in that case the Ukrainian influence is indirect.

Three Printed Editions of the Consecration Preaching of Bishop Grigore Maior, Vienna, 1773

The consecration of the Greek-Catholic Bishop, Grigore Maior, which took place in the Chapel of St. Peter from Vienna, in the presence of the empress and her Court, was not just an important political moment for Romanians living in Transylvania, but also a fashionable one. This paper deals with the consecration preaching conducted by the Viennese Abbot, Anton Ruschitzka, entitled Predigt von der Einigkeit im Christenthume über Johann 17, 20, 21. Besides the German edition of the preaching, the printer, Josep Kurzböck, who has had long ties with Grigore Maior, e. g. he was a censor of Romanian books printed in this typography, also printed a Slavic-Serbian and a Latin one.

We hope that this research, which approaches the subject from a more bibliological point of view, will shed some light on the social history of 18th century Transylvania, as part of the Habsburg Empire. We consider this event of the consecration of a Romanian Greek-Catholic Bishop in Vienna, as being important to contemporary Romanian historiography.
